Jazz Piano For Beginners || Tutorial #2: pentatonics, blue notes and how improvisation works

Музыка

Info about my book: www.billspianopages.com/how-to...
Next tutorial in the series: • Jazz Piano For Beginne...
Previous tutorial in series: • Jazz Piano For Beginne...
This is the second tutorial in my series on jazz piano for absolute beginners. In this lesson we build on what we learned in the first tutorial, using the C major pentatonic scale and two notes from the C blues scale to improvise over two, and then three, chords in the left hand.
I also introduce shell chords - incredibly useful for jazz piano - and talk about some of the underlying music theory it's useful for you to know, especially if you're relatively new to the piano or just coming back to the instrument.
Finally, I talk about the mental processes involved in jazz piano improvisation (and, in fact, in most forms of improvisation, musical and otherwise), and how skilled pianists and other improvisers have a mental toolkit from which they build their improvisations. This all depends on developing a "flow state". The best jazz pianists have the biggest and best-practised toolkits and the best flow.

Classical piano, pop piano and jazz piano are very different games. What you pay attention to is different. In classical piano, you know what key you are pressing, but never which note is that key. I’ve been playing pop piano for 20 years. And for me it’s easy to hear a song, grab a chord progression and play along improvising. If there’re chords written for me I’d go nuts with it. But if you give me a Chopin piece, I’d have to sit down and figure out what keys are pressed.

As a classical piano player I always struggled to find a good teacher for jazz (and unlearn 'onbeat' classical playing style). I love how your demonstrations fit all levels of piano players while giving them a sense of how far you could go by following you. These are by far the most satisfying self-learning videos for me. Thank you!

As a musician, coming to the piano for the first time, offers both strengths and weaknesses. Bill's lessons thus far have really served to satisfy that balance for me as someone who knows theory but not in the realm of the piano keyboard. Thanks so much Bill for your talent as a teacher and for breaking it down into very manageable chunks. I particularly liked your point about the pianist's toolbox. Because the piano, unlike the guitar, is so accessible for playing tight intervals, these tools in the pianist's toolbox have always been foreign to me. Thanks again for your program. I am now a subscriber.

  • @BillHilton

Thanks very much indeed Ricke! I guess one of the important points here - and it'll already be clear to you, but it's worth mentioning for anyone else who might be reading - is that a key part of the approach to learning any instrument (for which read "any complex task", I guess) is mindset. That's not just a case of being positive, applying yourself etc but also having the willingness and ability to spend time, as it were, mapping the territory ahead. That's what understanding the toolbox is about. Right, that's enough mixed metaphors for 10 past eight in the morning, but I hope you see what I'm getting at...!

Great video's! I love how you teach the essential theoretical stuff, but you make sure that even the first exercises are fun and sound groovy, so you get that instant gratification while practicing. I think that really helps keep people's attention, even if they are a little intimidated by the theory and learning curve (like me).

  • @BillHilton

    @BillHilton

    7 жыл бұрын

Thanks Otto! Yep, that's what I was trying to achieve, so it's good to hear the strategy worked for you. The thing with theory is to remember that it can seem very daunting, especially when explained in words (rather than at the keyboard) but in practice the essential stuff isn't really difficult. The trick is to push past the abstractions and try to see everything in practical, musical terms.

Great video! I now have a starting point to begin playing a truly unique sound I love to hear others play! I struggle to fit that B note in there whilst trying to improvise on the right hand, but I found that working with the "shell" of A7 (A-G) in the left (and completely ignoring the tonic / C7) makes my right hand flow much more smoothly. I can't decide if this is because I favor the key of A major, or because I prefer minor keys in general (A minor). :-)

Yes, indeed! The trick is to make sure you've really got the stuff from tutorial one nailed right down to the point you don't really need to think about it, then begin to layer this stuff on top. Give me a shout if you have any specific Qs - always happy to help!

I'm not a neuroscientist, Rosaline, but as I understand it there's similar stuff going on - it's all about flow states and suchlike. Glad you enjoyed it, anyway!

Great stuff! I was wondering if you're keeping time as you improv here? I worry about my right hand flurrying notes and breaking the boundaries of the measures outlined by the left hand. I feel a little worry about fitting the notes in the 'space' of a measure.

Hi Bill (customer of your book here), o think most KZread and off-KZread teachers fail to capture and structure what improv is about. And you could provide such a supplement video. For me, you can’t learn French by watching a teacher speak quick French for an hour. Instead, explain the theories of improv, for me, it is about “call and response”, “repetition”, “sequencing” and melody making principles of “conjunction-disjunct movements”.

I would agree. Half the problem, really, is that improvisation is as much a mindset as a set of techniques. Something I’ve thought about doing is releasing a few videos of me *just* improvising, marked up with graphics/subtitles to indicate what strategies I’m using/how I’m thinking at particular moments. Do you think that would be useful?
