his father wasn't all that into the idea of him going into the artistic path and their family didn't have enough money for his dancing lessons as it was, so his mother took another job in another city (or province, i don't remember) to pay for it. she put her blood, sweat and tears into helping him achieve his dream and he became known for his ability as a dancer. i'm very thankful to his mum.

I love this song by Hoseok. His lyrics are emotional, but he said he wanted to make this song more fun and in his own way, not emotionally. And the result was a beautiful masterpiece like "MAMA". I cried a lot when I first heard the song. When J-Hope gave this performance, it was February 18, that is, his birthday. His mother was also in the audience, so it was a very emotional moment.

I always felt the song painted an audio picture of his childhood: the instrumental being so upbeat & happy shows the face his mom showed to the world and her family; the lyrics are the reality of her life; the "breakdown" sections (sorry I don't know what else to call them) are both her exhaustion where her mask slips as well as Hoseok realizing exactly what his mom did so he could have the happy childhood he's nostalgic for and his devastation & gratitude for her.

J-Hope has such a huge bag of tricks that he can pull from. He just has so much character in his voice and can do so many things with it. And then he’s such a dynamic performer so he really commands a stage and pulls in the audience. And he’s so unique. Imagine someone trying to cover this?? Or any song of j-hope’s?? There’s just no way. He’s so impressive to me. I also appreciate you mentioning the fact that this was a difficult beat to rap over. I’m sure it’s his dance background but he has great musicality and can just feel how to create rhythms that work with and enhance any beat.

happy, bouncy, fun with serious lyrics is the perfect description of j-hope himself in a metaphoric way so the fact that you described this song that way just shows that - as you said - these songs are great expressions of the members themselves. MAMA doesn't have much of his more serious rapping but it's very vocally fun. it's probably my favourite solo song of his from the bts releases (excluding his solo mixtape hope world)

Fun Fact: there is "drum cam" footage from a few of their tour performances that the drummer uploaded. I couldn't find one for MAMA, but there is footage for Dope, Fire, N.O., Not Today. If you react to any of those, you might want to check those videos out. They're all on the same channel. Here's a link to Dope: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k52YmNucpNTXZdI.html

One of my favorite things bout BTS is just the sheer creativity and types of styles they use and combine. I have always bounced around what I listen to musically and they are the first group that is diverse enough I never get bored. They lyrics are meaningful but JHope in particular uses such an upbeat sound it makes me smile. As a mom this makes me hope one day my kids think of me even a fraction as well, and that I can give them this level of support and care.

As a daughter of a woman who gave her blood sweat and tears for me, who loved me with everything she had and gave me everything she could not because of a sense of responsibility but of pure uninterested love MAMA always hits me hard. Only my family know how many times we didn't have a single thing to eat or how to pay the rent and she just figured things out, hurting without letting anyone know just to give me and my siblings a better tomorrow. He makes old-school sound so cool. Who else mixes big-band swing with hip-hop scratch and gospel choir? Please listen to the extended version of Blue Side that j-hope released in March. Like this song, it's hard to put a finger on why I'm so captivated, but I can't stop listening. J-hope infuses melancholy with peace and hope and throws in a hypnotic wind chime for ear candy. Once you hear, "(Exhale) I love Mom." you never forget it. 💜 Also some of his ad libs on the recording saying, "Mama!" sound like a crying child. I'd like to see inside Hobi's brain sometimes. Or just witness his creative process. You already know, but man I've had extra stress this week, so getting your reaction to my bias' song was like an ice cream sundae for the soul. Thank you for your hard work on this one! It was so rich in content, since you brought in the instrumental knowledge and even compared it to the vocal line(?!)... So creative, Andrew! I always learn something amazing from your reactions! 🤩🙌🏻 The nostalgia factor theory is amazing. If I'm remembering correctly, BTS members used to just talk about the movie Home Alone when they first visited NY. Tons of Bari 🎷 in that soundtrack, I bet. Taking it one step further, j-hope's songs tend to be really rhythm driven because he tells stories like a street dancer would IMO, so maybe he used these nostalgic old school sounding instrument chops to create a rhythmic pattern for the story about his Mom. 🤔 I always wondered if church is important to her, since he incorporated the choir parts and the stained glass staging. ALSO- Your revelation face *might* become a meme. I'm warning you now. 👀 In case other ARMYs wanna know, Ghost Band drummer's name is Khan Sikyoon. He was on the Wings tour with them. 🔥 BTW in all honesty, the blurring took away very little from my enjoyment of the reaction. Very well done, Andrew!! CFA

I agree, I'd like to get into all of their brains 😂 Ohhh I haven't seen Home Alone for a few years so I'm curious too! Although I think that score is by John Williams and he usually uses a traditional orchestra (which wouldn't have saxophones) so I'm not sure. Ohhh that theory with the choir and stuff was actually part of my argument too for it being nostalgic because it's in Holiday music, but by that point I had been ranting for 5 minutes and wasn't making sense so I had to cut it out 😂 Hahaha are you turning that face into a meme? Do I need to be scared?? 😂

When I got into bts I never knew I’d have the chance to learn more about music composition, but they brought me to your channel and I just keep on learning new stuff with every video you put out. I love your analogy with the types of saxophone and which bts member they are, and also your eureka moment in the end when you realized they added another instrument to evoke nostalgia befitting the song’s lyrics and blending it well with the happy melody. I get goosebumps everytime I watch a video of his performance, especially that part where the music stops and he just raps his heart out. I find that most of Jhope’s songs in his mixtape “Hopeworld” have the similar vibe with MAMA, with the happy tune but insightful lyrics. Especially Daydream and Airplane. I’ve not yet been able to listen to a live performance of MAMA without getting goosebumps, especially at the end chorus. There’s just something about this song that makes me want to sob, laugh and hug my Mom all at the same time hahah. That’s not even including the actual track and Hobi’s singing, goshhh. I was so thrown the first time I heard this because I had no idea what to expect or what really was going on, but it will forever be a solid happy soul song for me. He’s just so emotive all across the board - whether it be rapping, dancing, singing. The versatility and artistry of this man is insane when you take a step back and look across their entire discography and I will forever hype him 🤣 Brb, gotta text my Mom.

I just noticed that with time I have started singing along to your theme tune which always plays over your title card 😀 The "feed the YT algorithm" edit still gets me every time 🤣 You being intriguied by the instrumentation and the music made me think of one of the members passing in front of J-Hope's studio and hearing "weird" noises. When they asked him what was going on he just said it was his new song (not this one, though) 🤣. So I think it's fair to say he loves to experiment with the music, play around, create sounds that one would not usually expect, and then somehow turn it into an extremely catchy song. Awwww, I loved you associating the ranges of the saxophones with members' ranges 😀 looking in your face during the acapella bridge part, wow (and i wrote that down just seconds before you paused and talked about how emotional that was). OOOhhhh! your nostalgia association was very interesting! I didn't really connect that to the instrumentation before, but it makes a lot of sense, yes. I love it whenever the bad ("ghost" usually) is there to join them for live performances, they are amazing, yes 🤩 🥕 CFA

Haha I found the clip of him eating at least a month ago and have been saving it for this moment 😂 Oh I love that he experiments with music! That's the only way we can progress forward musically. Everything is new and weird until it becomes the norm. The nostalgia thing was really cool to figure out! That was a fun "aha" moment. Haha And yes, Ghost is the best!

the comment about the nostalgic sound of the barisax was arguably the most insightful thing i've ever heard anyone say about MAMA, don't apologize for "talking too long" or anything haha MAMA is a masterpiece beyond explanation really. like you said, technically it's very unique and the raw emotions are incredible. hobi can have a very different style from yoongi but that term (raw) comes to mind with both this solo and "first love", don't you think? and the choir is incredible too

This is such a sweet song, it's hard not to get emotional even though it's so upbeat. He's telling his mom that he appreciates what she did for him so that he could pursue his dream and that now she can lean on him/he can take care of her. Thank you for the explanation on the instrumentation, it's really cool how BTS is not afraid to try stuff, I find. And Hobi is a hidden weapon when it comes to vocals. Those ad-libs in the live versions were no joke. I did find this video while I was looking up live versions in anticipation and now I'm never going to see a performance of Mama without imagining Jin doing the choreo under the stage while he waits for his turn (his song "Awake" was next in the set). He's too cute. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqVl17Oamsuuk5c.html

Jhope's whole character story (not in real life) in the BTS universe is about how he was abandoned by his mother with nothing but a snickers bar (which is why he is surrounded by snickers in the fake love mv. The snickers represents his last hope) and because of that, he lives in an orphanage for about ten years. He was diagnosed with Munchausen syndrome which means he fakes sickness for attention and in the short film for MAMA we see that when he takes his medication, the song is being played in the background whilst he sees a bunch of colours, showing all he wants is his mother to recognise him and give him attention (which kind of juxtaposes why he actually wrote the song for his mom in real life). You're right that it's supposed to have a nostalgic feel. His character is trying to remember the feeling of a mother and the feeling that he lost 10 years ago whilst in real life he is remembering the support that his mother gave him all his life. I just wanted to put this here because every member has a certain character that they play in the BTS universe and I think Jhope's character is just so interesting.

I feel like there's nothing that I can add so far (information wise) that hasn't already been stated so far, so I'll just say it's interesting to find out what you hear as a jazz musicians, you always have deeper understanding of what you're listening to while I'm just thinking a basic "this sounds good" x') Edit : You saying he has playful rapping is so accurate, we often relate it to his dancing because he really does rap like he dances 💜 Edit 2 : When you're talking about the songs combination of elements it just made me think of Hobi himself, he can be incredibly focused and stern while the next second being the sunshine to make everyone smile and laugh, even smiling through his own tears. Even still a lot of people see him at face value as the joker of the group, but he has so much more to him. 💜

Now, I've just found or re-listened to an interesting one, this one has weird musical arrangements which I thought right up your alley. Almost makes me feel uncomfortable, but that might have been the intention when you look at the lyrics. Unfortunately Doolset doesn't seem to have the proper lyrics so its a colour coded video. I'm sure one of the lines should read 'I remember' not 'I rewind' but I could be wrong.
