    Great equation and memory aid! I'm a former trumpeter that had more success improvising on keyboards and guitar than the trumpet and it is good to know to understand the way back home!

    I used to play trumpet. Biggest issue I had with improvising was the fact that there were only three valves for 20+ notes. When it came to guitar and piano, where all of the notes are right in front of you. The scales became visible patterns that I could relate to much better than having to imagine the keyboard while improving of trumpet. This is all different from your angle here-which is phrasing, but in the trumpet I couldn’t even get that far because of the lack of visual representation of the notes.

    Some instruments provide an easier visual layout than others (piano/guitar for example). The concept I try to teach with improvisation can be applicable to any instrument, though. But true, you have to get a grasp on the mechanics of the instrument you're trying to play first.

    But what about the start of solo ? To target chord tone next bar ?

  • @JasonKlobnakMusicInc

    @JasonKlobnakMusicInc

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm a big fan of starting solos with a pickup bar before the form starts. Because music is constantly moving forward in motion, my targets are always in the next bar so it feels like the solo isn't 'bar to bar' rather leading into the next.

    Hi Jason, Honestly, I have no clue what to play looking at your chart indicating certain notes. You need to spell out like I'm a five year old what the heck you're doing and how you're doing it. Also would help to see the transcription of what you're playing. Apart from that, your sound is quite nice. Thanks, Larry Peltz

    @@JasonKlobnakMusicInc Yep, I agree with Larry above. I've really no idea what we're supposed to be following. You could have broken it down bit by bit, and actually playing these little bits on your trumpet. For two-thirds of the video you are talking in superficial terms, then when you finally start playing, it's a massively complex improv (sounds good though!) and I have no idea what's going on. :)

    You’re onto something but that’s a big complex way of explaining something which is probably simpler. And there is stuff you’re not taking about which is necessary to crafting good lines. I dunno. Your lines are nice but despite my degree in Philosophy and Logic I can’t make your equation “sing”

    Not everything all encompassing on a subject like this can or should be done in one video. Finding different ways to describe a process may be complex to one, but helps simplify it for another. Either way - thanks for checking out the video!
