Jazz Guitar Today Lesson: Davy Mooney "Rhythm Changes"

Музыка

Davy Mooney discusses "Rhythm Changes," the variations on George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" that are foundational to the modern jazz practice. Mooney considers the original song, as well as "Lester Leaps In," "Thriving From a Riff," Don Byas and Slam Stewart's amazing 1945 version of "I Got Rhythm," and John Scofield's masterclass "Wee" from 2004's "En Route."

This made my day! I’ve noticed that Charlie Parker rarely plays the B note on the G7 except in the last turnaround before the top

This is brilliant, thank you very much. There's so much here to chew on ... and delivered in a way that it can actually be chewed on 😊 "Bb, not Bb" definitely enters the jazz pedagogy canon. Your vocabulary seems gigantic. Even the good material tends to skip the roots and evolution piece, and here you tie up the whole river that runs through it. Anyway, sincere thanks again.

At 2:45 I misspoke. I meant to say Bud Powell has a lot of cool rhythm changes tunes in Eb, not Ab!

“Bb and not Bb”, I love that man!! I’ve noticed in a diatonic sense, not using the 4th degree then using the fourth degree gives a similar tension and resolve. This was such a great watch, thank you so much for this contribution! You’ve made a fan!!!! And thanks JGT

Glad I’m not alone! In Bb, treat the G7 with Bb like a blues tone and go with Bb Ionian. I’ve experimented with Eb Lydian and F Mixolydian ( like an Oscar V7 pedal over the A section. Thanks for posting and you sound great.
