Jazz Guitar Articulation: Bebop to Post-Bop

In this lesson I demonstrate the difference between bebop and post-bop articulation as applied to the guitar. After explaining what makes each one unique, I give you some examples by naming some of the most noteworthy jazz guitarists in both schools of articulation. To conclude, I play a given phrase first using what many call "bebop" articulation and then play it again with the "post-bop" touch. Yes, the notes are identical but the feel is altogether different.
A good understanding of how to vary your "articulation" can help shape your style and bring to life the sound you desire.

Absolutely right about the importance of be-bop on succeeding styles.

Among contemporary players who keep the bebop type articulation alive, I think Jonathan Kreisberg is a great example (and great player). Tim Miller is a Holdsworth influenced player (post-bop) who uses lots of legato and overdrive (and also plays great).

Barney Kessel had extremely diverse right and left hand techniques includes hammer ons, pull offs , sweep picking, and finger style. Same with Tal Farlow. It is not so clearcut. It's mostly the musical idea that drives the technique required. IMO. If considering post bop, think of McLaughlin, he picks and articulates almost every note he plays. You do what you need to do.

2:15 isnt it also because he could only fret with the two fingers so legato would just be harder

Thanks Richie, I enjoyed this lesson/ demonstration. Re: fusion styles, are there any examples of players that also incorporate string bending techniques or is this purely the domain of blues and rock styles. Thanks David
