Jazz and Classical Music Similarities

Музыка

Please pardon the flipped video. I realized after making it that I had demonstrated the circle of fifths as if looking in a mirror. So, if I were to flip the video, that bit would come out backwards. Right-handed guitarists, pretend you're looking in a mirror.
Also, I touched on the same subject of just intonation and temperament that I had in previous videos. Please bear with me, as I primarily made this video for a new person.
In short, I want classical people to get back to improvising, jazz people to learn more music history, and both camps to stop looking down their noses at each other.

Thanks for the great video. I was thinking that the fa-mi quote was referring to the tritone. Fa being the fourth and mi the seventh using the two hexachords. I suppose that the minor second is somehow equivalent to the tritone. But that is another topic.

I'm a jazz musician who loves and plays (a bit) classical music. I always wondered, why the education of classical organists is so different to other classical instruments. As far as I know, here in Switzerland organists learn to improvise and compose. A good organist here has way better improvisational skills than a good jazz musician, "better" meaning, he improvises a hole piece, not just melodies over a fixed chord progression. And he uses his feet too... :-) Do you have an answer to that question? Is the classical organ teaching tradition something, that took it's on ways compared to the other instruments?

I think every player of a harmonic instrument should get an education like organists. The rest of us, outside of jazz, are being ripped off. There is another group of people who are doing things right, or at least attempting to do so, the historical performers. I'm biased as that's my field. We're trying to bring back improv, basso continuo, and other old practices. But honestly, even in this field, trying to get people to jam is like pulling teeth. It's very sad.

The Schola Cantorum Basiliensis is the hub of historical performance. I hope their students improvise.

I'm afraid that your opinions are not specially popular, but I essentialy agree with them.
