    Hi folks! A couple of clarifications: 1) Some people seem worried that this is going to detract from me putting out music content. It's fair to say that this first episode took a fair bit of work; the song, the editing, the end-screen, figuring RSS feeds etc. But that's mostly work in the bag now, and future episodes will be much less effort to put together. The other thing is that one of the biggest time-sucks for A Capella Science is actually me gathering information and gaining an understanding of the subject I'm covering. I'm obsessive enough about accuracy that often that's half the total time spent on a project. This actually feels like a solution to that problem. It's quite possible that these conversations will speed up my process, or at least alert me to much more interesting topics for videos. I've been feeling fairly cut off from the science world, to be honest. 2) I'm going to be cutting these interviews into smaller digestible chunks and uploading them as well. I wasn't sure if I would, but enough people seem to be commenting that they don't have time for a hour+ interview that it makes sense. But also, you should know that the podcast is on iTunes, TuneIn, Google Play and a few other podcast apps. So if you're driving or cleaning and you feel like learning instead of daydreaming or getting mad at passing cars, I offer myself as an option! As I said in the video, A Capella Science is here to stay. Thanks so much for supporting me; I'm going to keep trying to improve and grow over the next year. Cheers, -Tim

    LOVE the smaller edited segments! For those wanting the entire hour+, they can play them as a playlist. Those of us with less time to commit, knowing good places to stop is a HUGE help!

    Love your work - I think the interviews are wonderful, and people are led naturally from the gob-smackingly good music info-sorbs, into the interviews/chats. The birdman was really compelling. I with there was something like this for math, but I looove what your doing. Please know how important and how beautiful your work is, and how much it is appreciated.

    Tim, I just found your channel through a friend, and I really adore your channel and are inspired by you, please keep it up! I wanted to just ask you as a scientist, what do you do to stay motivated during school, particularly when you feel stressed and demoralized? I am a student who wants to go into the hard sciences(Especially interested in Astrophysics) but I feel like I don't have what it takes to get through school, so how did you stay focused? P.S. I love this new Sciencelife segment, very exciting!

    Yes it is! When I started at UBC, Sun workstations were the computing tool of choice for astronomers. I use the Ultra 1 tower as a literal tower, to bring my laptop closer to my comfort level on that low-set table. Who says that old computer technology is obsolete, eh?

    Could you publish this as an audio-only podcast too? Seeing as the video isn't really important and it would enable people to listen to it on the go...

    Tim, don't most people know how to "pause" and come back later? I do it all the time. Also, I do enjoy the visual as much as the audio. I especially love watching your reactions to things your guest says. Please don't eliminate that! I'm ready for the next interview. Brian May? Brian Wilson? Brian Greene?

    Love the idea, but could you make them shorter and snappier? I think this will really help spread ideas of science. Also please try not to dumb down the content if you can help it. I loved this video btw, thanks for your content.

    @MusicalRaichu, @AtreyaDey and the others are right, you should consider splitting the interviews in addition to posting the entire interview. A good example of this kind of splitting is that done by The Rubin Report (kzread.info). Dave Rubin interviews mainly cultural and political personalities, and the interviews last about an hour total. He splits these into three parts, putting each part up on successive days, and then puts up the whole interview -- because some people actually WANT to listen to the whole thing at once. People like me, for example!

    content is interesting but i can't afford over an hour at one sitting on a talk. you need to cut it down to say 15-20 mins. e.g., you can divide this video into several videos, e.g., one exciting us about the main results, another about the historical background to the project, and you can have a link to a back story about how Prof Matthews got into his line of work. it's helpful to have it in a podcast format where speech tells the story, but adding a few graphics for people who have access to visuals too is also helpful. doesn't need to be expensive or time consuming to make, just things that help us picture what the words are talking about, e.g., cut to photos of Prof Matthews when younger, the satellite, the sun, a graph of the sun's "sound", an example of a white dwarf. for examples have a look some Sixty Symbols or Numberphile videos. you can make yours longer because you have a different emphasis, but they're examples of essentially an interview that are to the point with a bit of graphics to help visualization and comprehension.

    I've already commented, suggesting splitting future interviews, but had to add a special comment. Several commenters have indicated that they cannot deal with an hour-long interview, and as an ADD-enabled person I can appreciate their perspective, but keeping scientist interviews down to just one hour sounds way too sketchy to me. A one-hour interview seems to be "just right".

    I'm planning on uploading the interviews in more digestible chunks as well! I just started with a whole one to give people an idea of what it's going to be. Not sure if in future I'll release the chunks first, or the whole episode first. Thoughts?

  • @cyberherbalist

    @cyberherbalist

    As a subscriber and frequent listener to The Rubin Report, I always prefer to wait until Dave releases the full interview -- rather than do it in chunks. But then, I'm retired and can take the time to listen to the whole thing (I usually do it while playing World of Warships, btw, being somewhat of a multitasker). But I'm pretty sure most people would prefer chunks first.
