Jay Weinberg (Slipknot) and Roland V-Drums Acoustic Design VAD506

Музыка

Being a drummer in one of the biggest metal bands on the planet, with a relentless touring schedule, comes with its challenges.
Jay Weinberg, drummer with band Slipknot, has to keep his drumming and physical fitness in top shape. Touring with Slipknot is the drumming equivalent of being asked to run a marathon, night after night. Playing a show this demanding without a warmup can lead to injuries, which could be game over for the tour. That’s why Jay chooses to take his V-Drums on tour (specifically, a TD-50KV) - so that he can maintain tour-readiness and warm-up before every live show. Having a V-Drums kit on-hand is also useful for helping Jay and the band pen new songs and easily capture demo tracks on tour.
In this video, Jay checks out the V-Drums Acoustic Design VAD506 for the very first time, backstage at a Slipknot show. Already being very familiar with his TD-50KV V-Drums, Jay compares his current V-Drums setup with the VAD506 and talks about the differences he can see between them.
Jay’s custom setup uses two VAD506 kits, combined together, to exactly model his acoustic kit setup as played on stage with Slipknot. Two TD-27 modules are tethered together to provide inputs for all pads within the kit. Drum audio is recorded directly from the TD-27 modules into a DAW. Mixing and panning completed in post-production, maintaining the authenticity of the TD-27 module sound. Video and audio recorded backstage at a Slipknot concert on January 24th 2020, Birmingham, UK.

Jay's a beast! I've been one of those guys that was on the fence about buying into Roland's high prices, as they seemed just like Apple is to cell phones, of which I'm not a fan of. But, after weeks of research, I went against my own beliefs and went with the Roland VAD 506 (the kit in this video is a 506, on steroids). In a nutshell - the best money I've ever spent on a musical instrument in 30+ years. I was expecting a lot for the high cost, and Roland really did deliver. Perfect triggering, plays with VST's like a dream, recording options out the wazoo, and the look and feel of a small acoustic setup. It's so much fun to switch on the power during a quick break at work (work from home), and jam during quick work breaks. It didn't take long to build a few kits that have pretty good sounds too. I personally record the usb audio and midi out, makes for quick scratch tracks when I come up with ideas on the guitar. Lastly, I had an Alesis DM10 that I converted to mesh heads about 7 years ago, and this new Roland kit blows it out of the water in every single regard. I've been playing it every chance I can get daily for 3 weeks now, and not a single issue or missed triggering. Not one... Gotta love that for recording. Happy drumming!

We are no longer in a time where acoustic drummers should shun electric drums. They don't sound like they did when Naked Eyes was in their heyday, that's for sure. Today, you buy a nice e-kit and potentially get dozens of other kits right along with it. That's pretty frickin cool.

3:58 - I recently saw a picture of Rammstein's Christoph Schneider playing in-studio on an even simpler kit. - Surely, they're just writing and demo-ing, but clearly they don't shy away from using less advanced stuff. - Although, he already used pads and such as far back as the '90s, so it's not a new thing to them in particular. - But it just seems that electronic kits have come to such a point that they've become a more valid tool for even those who normally just use acoustics.

The drum set as he has it on this video, probably $15 to 18000. Of course if you are a recording/touring artist like him, Roland may sponsor you or give you a huge discount, so yeah. us normal people are never going to be able to afford something like this. (Don't get me wrong I can afford it, I just can't justify spending that much on ANY music related gear).

Question to acoustic drummers; Isn't it annoying how the rubber cymbals feel grippy to the sticks, as opposed to harder and smoother metals?... I've always thought so, even as a non-drummer... I don't know if the treatment has changed at all, but it just feels weird.

Looks amazing! But please Roland, work on the sounds better. Snare and drums sound so artificial, I just sold my TD-30 and was about to get this set, but the sounds are holding this kit back. BTW, Jay is a monster!!!

I use a VST when recording and tweak the sounds in the DAW. So the Roland stock sounds are irrelevant for me when I'm playing into MIDI but as TC Ellen says, you can save your own sounds in the module anyway.

TC Ellen the trigger response when installing your own samples isn’t the same. Doesn’t feel real at all. THAT is the problem

Lol take everything he says with a grain of salt. He’s got Roland breathing down his neck through this video on the other side of the cameras.

Yeah but he wouldn't take the deal if the drumset wasn't great, of course there is stuff he is "forced" to say but you aren't forced to sing the deal

To my mind, it is for having a kit that actually looks like a kit. Appropriate when on stage but if being used as a practice kit to play without upsetting the neighbours, then I agree with you, it is pointless. That's why I bought a TD-50KV2 instead of a VAD series. Horses for courses.
