I'm here and being utterly blown away by this man's voice!

The fact that this man was singing this song damn near note for note still well into in his 70’s without auto tune or any major effects is probably one of the most amazing things I’ve ever heard. Jay Black was a generational talent in my opinion and I wasn’t even born for another 15 years after this songs release. Just amazing

Yes and so many of the singers of the time have or still do. I saw Tommy James last March 2023 in Vegas and OMG, talk about a spiritual experience! Was like a time warp going back to my youth. Even got a couple photos along side him when he toured the room.

Jay had pipes, for sure - but his SHOWMANSHIP, developed over years of success, became quite killer...so that many fans did not even notice (or want to care about) all the shakiness in those notes that he did hit. His smooth was in the way he worked the crowds - not in the way he sang the notes as a senior citizen. The audience felt that they got their money's worth --more important, their cherished nostalgia was not crushed.🎉

Absolutely one of the best. Those were the best of times. Thank God I'm a baby boomer.

He was discouraged early on from being an opera singer. Said his voice wasn't strong enough. This is what evolved. They were an excellent group.

I read he was in training to be a cantor which is a formal religious singer. Could be he had some voice training but, I think he was mostly just blessed to be born with this one-in-a-million voice.

@@nancysimons8834 Ineresting observation. There are very few singers with Freddy Mercurys working vocal range and I think he was mostly self taught. I suspect he most likely ran across Jay Black and I am sure he would have been inspired by Jay's voice.

Sure wish I was back in the 60's love this music nobody sings this good anymore.

Now there is a singer! And todays singers can't hold a candle to the greats of 40-50 years ago like Jay Black.

One of the best songs ever performed by a great vocalist. We’ll miss you.

It was interesting that Jay Traynor Black did the vocals for their first album, but when he left the group, a few of the songs had to be re-recorded with Jay Blatt Blacks's voice which was about as Identical to Jay Taynor's voice, as you could get, but MUCH more powerful!

I just learned a few minutes ago of his passing yesterday. He had his range pretty much to the end, and was one of the best. Through his recordings, he will be young and immortal forever.

RIP Jay. Loved your voice, your music. I remember the first time I heard Cara Mia. It was so beautiful, the quality of his voice was just overwhelming. I had to go out immediately and get my own copy. I still have it, but I don't have a record player to play it on anymore. Great music.

This was my husband and mine song. It was the last one we heard before he left to go overseas in service. When he came back to me, we had this done at our wedding reciption , Still our song 58 years later.

Fantastic voice from a underrated singer. Who else could hit those high notes but him. Pure harmony

Everyone in that audience knows that song, by heart. How can you say this man is underrated? I'm here, I can "sing" along because, after all these years, I still remember something from my 15th year. These guys were famous. They had hit after hit, all radio fare. Where do you people get the idea that people from my youth are underrated. I think people in your youth don't know anything about anything that occurred prior to the day you were born. Jay would hardly be a headliner tonight if he was forgotten. Common knowledge. My dad died earlier this year and I went to my favorite pool hall and played this and a bunch of other oldies for him in his honor. I apologized in advance to the younger crowd there. Many times after I went back to that bar, they would give me money and ask me to play my "daddy's music"!

I would beg to differ - Roy Orbison had a 9 octave range. But Jay certainly was one of the few who could hit the high notes and also utilize his falsetto range effectively.

What a beautiful voice! Love Jay and The Americans !!! The ‘50’s and the ‘60’s can never be beat! The songs that brought out the best and gave us love. I cherish all of these songs and I miss those years growing up and playing these songs on my stereo with my girlfriends and listening to them on my transistor radio! Beautiful and wonderful memories I hold in my heart now that I’m in my 70’s!

What a set of pipes...Jay is an amazing singer.

Great music is eternal. Wish we had music like this today. ❤

What a singer!I was fortunate enough to see him in person at UNC in 65 or,66.So sorry that he is no longer with us.

You can't beat the songs from the past it brings back what we have lost but loved and still love

Back in the early seventies I played guitar for young lady. Jay and the Americans was and is one of my favorite groups. I told this young lady that my favorite song was Cara Mia when I heard that song my heart would break. She told me that Jay Black was her first cousin. She said that he is playing in LA and she will call him and let me talk to him. I thought I died and went to heaven. I didn't get a chance to talk to him because he just got on stage. The next day I went to her house and play guitar for her again and Jay Black was there. We played and sang together for about an hour and a half. Next to marring my late wife I've never been so happy or proud. He is a wonderful lovely man and is very giving and loving. Thank you Jay you made my life happy again.

Heard him joke of one of those PBS specials, I think it was, that at his age, some of those notes were coming out of his butt, or some such thing as that.

Jay could hold a note like no else in rock and roll.

For me, when the Beatles hit Ed Sullivan was the day the music died. It's never been the same. Don't get me wrong, the Beatles were good (their hair was better). Mick was fun, at least you could dance to the Stones. Lots of good British stuff from back then. But they killed off pop songs like Cara Mea. Land of a Thousand Dances. Town Without Pity. Yakkety Yak. Crying. Over the Mountain. Even Hound Dog. The Beatles were the Greatest, but so were The Drifters. Even the Supremes. That stuff evaporated and was laid to rest when Sugar Hill Gang came along. That was surely the end of black men who could sing.

Listening again pondering my life at 72 how beautiful this music is spectacular compared to today's how lucky we were it makes me feel happy inside to know we were in this ERA thanks Jay and the American's for the beautiful music I will play at my funeral

I'm a guy, and while it may not melt my heart, I know a little girl that it will melt hers, and in less than a year, she and I will dance to this. She says we have different tastes in music. Let's see whose taste changes after we dance to this. You can understand every word, and it makes sense ! Plus just to add to it, This guy was professionally trained as an opera singer.

I'm 17 years old. And I can't even listen to this song without crying. When my mom and dad got divorced when I was 8, my dad used to blast this song in the house and sing it so loud. It still to this day makes me so emotional to even listen to it. It makes me so nostalgic.

Nobody can sing like Jay Black. He's terrific.

He is one of the greatest singers of all time ‼️ 2023 😊

Jay had one of the cleanest and full voice control of any singer coming out of the sixties.

I grew up in the 60s listening to his music. That music will never die! I am 68 years old now and still listen and love Jay! He will be sadly missed!

I'm 59 years old and have all their albums. I knew he was special when I was a teenager....just like him. Love to see young people appreciating his voice. He was awesome.

He is definitely amazing more people my age (14) should appreciate this type of music such as Frank Sinatra and Jay and the Americans. Now everyone listens to the terrible trap music

I just listened to this song 6x straight. ALWAYS loved it and always loved Jay's voice. Jay you will be missed but not, NOT forgotten.

I remember watching Jay and the Americans with my Mom and Dad about 25 years ago on PBS. My Daddy Loved this song and remember him sing along with it. My parents are now in heaven. I would give anything to go back to that time with them. Watching this video helps me to do so. 😢

One thing can't be denied about music at this time, it was eclectic. It ranged from Chuck Berry singing Maybelline, to Duane Eddy doing a guitar instrumental "Rebel Rouser" to Jay and the Americans doing this, the Penguins singing, "I Only Have Eyes For you" to Japanese Kyu Sakamoto singing "Sukiyaki" in Japanese! to Elvis singing Hound Dog or Little Richard, "Tutti Fruity." to Marty Robbins, "El Paso" or silly things like, "Purple People Eater" or "Runnin' in the Jungle" and the ultra-soppy "Teen Angel" Slow songs, fast songs, Cha-cha tunes, even a waltz or two. The music scene was wide open. If you could come up with something a little different, even off key, you had a chance to get it on the air. Fun times.

Jack Sprat Jack we were so blessed, and spoiled to have our music. Every generation is different of course, but there is no comparision to what passes for popular music on the radio today, than what we got to listen to every day for two decades. the other thing is the media itself. We all had the same radios. AM and then FM and the same music no matter if you were in Sitka Alaska, or Key West Florida. This generationally shared music will never happen again. Whatever the music quality, people are now too fragmented with their own choices to take a kid from Nome and a kid from Key West and have them know each others songs lol

I still cry when I hear his singing that lovely song, what a voice. What a gift from God that voice is.

I love these oldies by Jay and the Americans. Yesterday's music was the best. Talented singers like Jay without the need for electronic enhancement.

Jay Black (born, David Blatt) became known as "The Voice," and with just reason. His range and power were (and at last listen, still is) something to behold with wonder. The cat "has the pipe" as they used to say, and it is a pleasure to hear him sing these classic '60s songs.

Westbury Music Fair represent!

Fond memory...I was in a friend's car who was driving us to a NYC beach. He would punch the radio station buttons continually looking for a station that was playing this song. After finding it, listening to it, he would start punching the buttons again and again to hear another station play it. Same routine when we returned from the beach. We must have heard Cara Mia at least 10 times or more. Great listening to a beautiful voice!

An Incredible vocalist - I've never stopped loving his music since I saw him on TV as a teenager. RIP

There’s only one thing wrong with this song-it isn’t long enough! His vocals and range are great. The singer on the left smiles at Jay in admiration.

I would add that I'd prefer a longer and more developed set of lyrics. Too many good songs were short of their potential because of repetitious lyrics. 'Stella by Starlight' is another example. 'Marie' by Irving Berlin is still another.

I will always miss Jay black and his terrific voice😢

Jay, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Maestro are the four "GREATEST " male voices of the Doo Woo era. I can listen to their music all day long , over and over. It's impossible for me to decide who is number # 1. I'm so glad I grew up in that time frame and today their songs generate GREAT MEMORIES.

Only those who are tone deaf would vote this down...this is the best vocal performance in the history of rock and roll !!!

during a time when EVERYONE spoke and sang in impeccable English, singing songs that touched the heart but were intellectually sound, understandable, moving and eternal. nothing today compares.

@@maryann1531 the sad thing I have seen is ever since we have been mandated to love each other somehow or another resentment, anger and revenge got a foothold, language changed, feelings towards each other changed, the Mills Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, The Platters and on and on and on, same with Sinatra, Como, etc. their diction impeccable, simple stories simply sung with intelligence and emotion, all went by the board when somehow or another the mandate to love in the 60s led to people allowing their worst side to show as in 'you better like the way I talk, walk etc. etc. or else. so, the music world reflects this. screaming instead of singing, ranting and raving instead of telling a story, noise replacing intellectual silence. thanks to You Tube we can get a taste of intelligent singing.

I'm 37 and this song is just amazing. What an amazing voice! No contemporary singers are as good.

The vocal range of the lead singer is so unique and the group overall gave a fantastic performance.

SAW JAY BLACK ON PBS WAS BLOWN AWAY BY HOW POWERFUL HIS VOICE STILL IS ! A PHENOMENAL SINGER AT ANY AGE .

Jay Black was so underrated as a singer, I'm surprised you even bothered to listen to him. His singing was too weird. No one else did that stupid stuff except maybe Lou Christy. White boys did not do falsetto, that was a black thing. No wonder hardly anyone liked Jay Black. What kind of Rock n Roll is "Some Enchanted Evening?" "Only in America" was silly. "Come a Little Bit Closer" was a song about Mexico. Nobody liked that kind of music. No wonder no one remembers Jay Black.
