The disappearance of Jay Slater has highlighted the sheer number of people who go missing every year.
Missing Persons expert Charlie Hedges tells Kate and Adil that 'each case is different' but that a 'triage process to deal with the cases in the right order.' and Adil asks why there appears to be a disparity between members of the black and asian communities more likely to be missing for longer than white people.

The British media outlets never quite say that sometimes people go missing because they have been abducted and their lives forcibly ended, afterwards their bodies chopped up, burnt, etc, before their remains dumped in a far away location from where they were last seen. I remember reading a story of a family putting out an appeal for a missing young woman in the local press, but nothing forthcoming - then 2 years later her body was fought in a man's freezer with another long dead woman there as well.

460 people went missing in the whole of the Canary Islands in four years, 2020-23. Jay Slater, 18, of Fountains Way, ACCRINGTON - 18 month community order with 25 days rehabilitation activities and 150 hours unpaid work. Convicted of violent disorder in August 2023, when he was aged 18. He is now 19. His codefendants were found guilty of witness intimidation, attempted robbery and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Throughout a trial at Preston Crown Court, all eight laughed and joked in a way the judge said showed disrespect. The judge said if the group had been convicted of the more serious charge of section 18 wounding, they would all have gone to youth custody. Tom Hilton, who was 17 at the time of the attack, suffered a head injury so serious his skull was exposed, and wounds to his shoulders and legs in the attack close to the Old Paper Mill in Hermitage Street, Rishton, in August 2021. The Daily Record: Eight thugs who split boy's head open with machete dodge jail The teens were slapped with community service after attacking Tom Hilton, who was 17 at the time, with a machete, an axe and a golf club. By Rachel Smith Eve Beattie 19 JUN 2024 Please compare pictures of the convicted Jay Slater in the Lancashire Post article: Eight handed community and rehabilitation orders over attack 4th August 2023, with any other pictures of missing Jay. It is the same person. Tom Hilton, the victim, was jailed for 14 months, disqualified from driving for 25 months and must sit an extended re-test if he wants his licence back. He pled guilty to attempted burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. Before conviction for these offences, he had 14 convictions for 28 offences. The court also heard that on committing these offences on February 12, Hilton was in breach of two community orders which had been imposed on him, one just three days earlier and one in November 2021 which was a two-year order. Recorder Timothy Hannam KC said: “You have an awful record for someone of your age. “You’ve had a great many chances to change your ways but these offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate. “This was a prolonged period of bad driving being chased by police. The speeds were terrifyingly high in built up areas. You were lucky the streets were relatively empty." I don't think so did you think the police in Tenerife wouldn't have known that because they do have internet over there believe it or not. At the end of the day no parent or family should have to go through that it doesn't matter what he has done and by no mean's am I saying it was alright because it wasn't and from what I have read he was brought to court for it.

@donnaturley9191 The judge said, ""I have to have at the forefront of my mind the fact that most of you were children when you committed these offences. "I make it very, very clear that all eight of you have behaved disgracefully, in relation to the violent disorder but also intimidation of witnesses, supply of class A drugs and street robbery. You should all eight be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves but I am not at all convinced you are. "Many of you have found these proceedings amusing throughout the trial and yesterday and today, showing disrespect to the court. I hope for the sake of all your families, the public and the people who have offered you jobs and apprenticeships and the sort that you all grow up. Every one of you deserves to be sent to youth detention. "Some of you played a more active role in the violent disorder than others, some of you carried weapons, some wore balaclavas but the seriousness of this is the group nature of it. As a group you were all more threatening than you would have been as individuals." The judge said if the group had been convicted of the more serious charge of section 18 wounding, they would all have gone to youth custody. However, he said he took a rehabilitative approach when sentencing them for violent disorder and further offences including witness intimidation, attempted robbery and conspiracy to supply class A drugs. At the end of the day, I have not made any comments about Slater's parents. I have never said they deserve to go through anything at any point.
