The acting is pretty bad, but Spielberg loves 'real' people with interesting looks. 'Characters' so to speak (Like the guy with the pipe walking out of the shack). Even though this scene was deleted here, I would think that Spielberg probably originally planned to use a good voiceover actor if he decided to use the scene. I was surprised to learn that June Foray dubbed the line "the pond is for old ladies". I always thought that voice sounded funny. Not sure why that needed dubbing, but it makes sense and I definitely hear June Foray now. 'Salvatore' was a character much like 'Meadows'. His part shrunk as the script got rewritten, but there was still a lot left that was actually filmed it seems. See also the deleted 'blooper' scene where it was 'Meadows' that went with Brody to sea and found Ben Gardner's boat.

Interesting. I always wondered what happened to that little guy with the greasy hat. I'm glad it was trimmed out. Slows the pacing and the dynamic between the three main players here. It was a distraction. Editors chose wisely. Also, you may note that the greasy hat is still there when they load up the ship w/ Hooper's gear. 'Half-a$$sed astronaut' scene. So it doesn't make sense he'd still be there to help Hooper, who would be showing up days later from when he got 'fired/quit'. The cut was not only better, it was necessary for continuity. Sure, we hear Quint griping about getting good help under 60, etc. But hints are good enough and are usually better. I always wondered where the guy went, too, but I didn't need to know exactly. The character is background. And wondering is better sometimes. It's like the great scene aboard Hoopers science vessel at night and they spot a wrecked ship adrift. Chief exclaims, "That's Ben Gardner's boat!" Hooper asks about him, and Chief replies, "Sure I know him, he's a fisherman here." That's all we need. But... We actually met Ben Gardner early on, if you recall. Twice in fact. First time he was when he welcomes Hooper at the dock. "Well, hello yourself little fella." We meet him again in the noisy mass of hunting ships as he complains in local dialect about the idiots blowing themselves up. But we don't need to remember it's the same guy. All we need to know is it's a local fisherman whom Chief knows owns that boat. We soon find out what happened to him. (By the way, the man is real. He wasn't an actor, but a fisherman on the island of Martha's Vineyard and helped Robert Shaw with his character and dialect. I forgot his name, but I'm sure you can look it up). The scene is wonderful. Great blocking, movement on several planes, with a constant view of the ocean (their destination) out the window and the threat of what's in store for them on the walls all around them. Not to mention Shaw's lines. Not a curse uttered, yet this guy scares the beegeebies out of ya. He exudes raw power. Even when he says, 'Excuse me, Chief' and walks past him, we don't know if he's going to rip someone's head off or turn off the coffee pot. Unpredictable is an understatement of his portrayal of Quint. Unlike my long post, less is usually more. ;) Cheers from Tokyo. Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

I have seen Pirates of the Caribbean and I can see the similarity of Quint saying maybe I should go alone the same way Captain Sparrow would say it which is Johnny Depp. The expression and the way he says it. Uncanny.

And the last we see of Salvatore is him handing stuff to Quint on ORCA as they are preparing to leave, he also passes the Rifle to Quint which would be so important in the final few minutes of the film. It’s a pity his refusing to go with Quint was dropped but the acting/vocals were not good. Cheers.

@@666DementedDerek Sorry for the late reply but it still doesn’t make sense for them to cut it out. Without this small scene, the entire scene makes no sense, well, except for a few things that don’t need explanation like Quint saying that Hooper has city hands or the things that Quint asks for in exchange…

Unlike Quint, the first mate knew this shark was especially dangerous. He made the right call. A pity the character wasn’t used again for JAWS 2. Would’ve been interesting to see him about Amity Island, four years after the original shark attacks.

Jaws. A shark film. And we see scarcely little of the thing, till the climactic battle at the end of the film. & we really don't mind, with these characters we have here..all 3 of them, amazing. Richard Dreyfuss is still around & a political conservative. You can bet Mr. Shaw was & likely Roy Scheider, as well. Leftists can act, for sure..Tom Hanks et al..but nowhere near on this lvl. Why am I going political? Because..with less conservatives and censorship of the ones still around..how will the movie industry make films like Jaws? Is Woke gunna crank out a movie like this? Ha. ..not that we aren't losing far more important things..
