There's some confusion over whether or not the Empire killed ALL the Jawas. I didn't mean to insinuate that they did, the Empire just killed the Jawas that picked up Threepio and Artoo.

I always imagined they looked a bit rodent-y, like that character whose name I've forgotten from the mos eisley cantina

What I think is cool about Jawas is that when you imagine them, you never really think about what their true faces look underneath. They're just so iconic as they are.

Jawas are actually space soviets, as proven by their wielding of modified mosin nagant blaster rifles.

Jawas would be British then, as their blasters are actually LeEnfield rifles. The ones they used even had a LeEnfield grenade launcher cup (that big muzzle attachment)

You did not explain what a Jawa is. Where do they come from? Are they sentiment, bio mechanical, organic? Why do their eyes light up?

Its not their actual eyes. There sand goggles, they're yellow because they're glowing sensors that allow Jawas to see in sandstorms and at night. That's the theory if you believe Maz Kanata is actually a Jawa, and it makes sense considering that the Tuskin Raiders also use eye covering goggles to live in the desert environments. They are a technological species given their sandcrawlers and droid re-purposing activities so have techno-goggles would be perfectly believable.

I like the idea that Maz was a Jawa, but a exceptional Jawa of her race who was force sensitive. She lived most of her life as a Jawa, but as she began to realize her abilities in the force, she quit her primitive life as a Jawa and became a renouned space pirate. Maz never chose to become a Jedi, but instead lived a quieter life, never revealing her force abilities to anyone, but used the force to prolong her life. This also fits cause it would give insight into what Jawas look like, and also show that Jawas eyes dont glow, but its more the goggles they use to protect their eyes in the Tatooine desert, and they light up, allowing people to have a focal point when they communicate with them. The goggles are also used as spectacles, maybe because Jawas eye-sight is actually not that good, so Jawas always wear googles, just like what Maz wears.

Le PlAn CoOp Maybe Maz was a exceptional Jawa, in that firstly she was the only known force senstive Jawa, and through the force, enabled her to speak the basic language. Abit like how Anakin as a boy was the only human being who could physically ride pod racers, because of his exceptional reflexes matching other alien races and even surpssing some.

Maz has the goggles which could have a connection to the glowing eyes, plus in The Phantom menace in Anakins room on Tatooine (The Jawas home planet) there is a small sculpture that looks a lot like Maz.

I am not particularly familiar with Star Wars but wanted to see this because, on the Sick and Wrong Podcast, Episode 607, there was an interview with a woman who claims that she has been contacted by numerous extraterrestrials throughout her life. She said, once, when she was younger, she ran into her living room and there were seven short Grey Aliens floating above the floor, wearing monk-like hoods "like Jawas"! They just wanted to speak to her to protect her!
