I came here in winter. It was like something out of a fairy tale! We were the only ones there, and you couldn't see the tops of the canyon because of fog, snow coated everything. Honestly one of the most amazing experiences. It's hard to put it in words

eliza, I get you sister, totally! I was born and raised in southern Utah. There is NO way anyone can see the "BIG 5" or "Mighty 5"... its all so incredible that you stop at several points in each National Park in Utah and remember the divine creations. Be still and know that I am God.

Just an FYI if you ever do the Narrows: ALWAYS wear proper footwear and never go barefoot. The Virgin River is strewn with varying sized pebbles and rocks that absolutely hurt if you take a wrong step or fall down (which it is very likely you will since you are hiking against the current). When I did it I made the mistake of not wearing the right water shoes, and I ended up just using my normal hiking shoes. The bottoms provided me with great traction, but after being soaked they start to weigh you down and the shoelaces would untie easily. After hiking the Narrows for about 6 hours, the back of my feet were pretty tore up and I ended up getting scars from it, because I did not wear socks high enough to prevent scratching. The water is very very cold, so do not be afraid to wear warm leggings or pants, it doesn't help much but it's better than nothing.

"Take your time, it ain't goin' anywhere. . . ." I wish everyone could see Zion, and the Beehive State. By this timely aid was I enabled to reach the place of my destination in Pennsylvania; and immediately after my arrival there I commenced copying the characters of the plates. I copied a considerable number of them, and by means of the Urim and Thummim I translated some of them, which I did between the time I arrived at the house of my wife's father, in the month of December, and the February following. Sometime in this month of February, the aforementioned Mr. Martin Harris came to our place, got the characters which I had drawn off the plates, and started with them to the city of New York. For what took place relative to him and the characters, I refer to his own account of the circumstances, as he related them to me after his return, which was as follows: "I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translated was also correct. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him. "He then said to me, 'Let me see that certificate.' I accordingly took it out of my pocket and gave it to him, when he took it and tore it to pieces, saying that there was no such thing now as ministering of angels, and that if I would bring the plates to him he would translate them. I informed him that part of the plates were sealed, and that I was forbidden to bring them. He replied, 'I cannot read a sealed book.' I left him and went to Dr. Mitchell, who sanctioned what Professor Anthon had said respecting both the characters and the translation." And it came to pass that Jared and his brother, and their families, and also the friends of Jared and his brother and their families, went down into the valley which was northward, (and the name of the valley was Nimrod, being called after the mighty hunter) with their flocks which they had gathered together, male and female, of every kind. And they did also lay snares and catch fowls of the air; and they did also prepare a vessel, in which they did carry with them the fish of the waters. And they did also carry with them deseret, which, by interpretation, is a honey bee; and thus they did carry with them swarms of bees, and all manner of that which was upon the face of the land, seeds of every kind. And it came to pass that when they had come down into the valley of Nimrod the Lord came down and talked with the brother of Jared; and he was in a cloud, and the brother of Jared saw him not. And it came to pass that the Lord commanded them that they should go forth into the wilderness, yea, into that quarter where there never had man been. And it came to pass that the Lord did go before them, and did talk with them as he stood in a cloud, and gave directions whither they should travel. ---Ether 2:1-5, THE BOOK OF MORMON
