Jaugada, A Forgotten Fort of Kalinga | ଜଉଗଡ଼, କଳିଙ୍ଗ ର ହଜି ଯାଇଥିବା ଦୁର୍ଗ

#Jaugada #Kalinga
Today, I am going to show you a 2200 old capital fort of ancient Kalinga province which has been mentioned in many old epics like Ramayan and Mahabharat either in names like Sampaa or Samapa or names like Kalinga, Kangoda. The history of this place is too old to prove with any evidence, but the only eyewitness evidence is the "Indica" written by Megathenese who visited Kalinga at that time. My all references are from the translated edition of that book.
Kalinga was one of the strongest kingdoms in India and its Elephant Army was greatest among them. They were a fighter clan and traders with a decorated Navy for the naval trade route with big ports like Palur, Kalinganagaram, and others. Many books in modern history claims the Kalinganagaram or the Srikakulam was the capital of Kalinga then, but most of the old scripts and eyewitness wrote about the sighting of Rushikulya river from the top of the fort and Palur Port (which was a bigger city than Rome those days), which is nowhere nearby to Srikakulam. Kalinga's timelines and boundary changed from time to time, hence the most modern capital was Cuttack when the eastern Gangas ruled, but it was a time around 600-900 AD, and not the Kalinga which was 300-400 BC.
Jaugada served as the capital fort for Kalinga till 259 BC when Ashoka and Mauryans attacked the fort and found a way to take it down. The sound of the underground tunnel of such a huge 13-floor fort can be still heard around the site.
The place is a good one who loves history and wish to know and see the Ashokan scripts on rocks.
Google Map Location- goo.gl/maps/7zApK2PWShz44TMP7
The remains of the fort are less attractive, but if the site is excavated to find, what is beneath the earth, which was once done during 1996 when one old tunnel was found, more such evidence can be found about the ancient Kalinga and the technology, lifestyle they had.
On a serious note, Govt should start protecting and digging the site otherwise, no one will remember this place after a century.

This place is once the capital city of Kalinga Kingdom and it was epi centre of the Kalingan administration from the Ramayana period till its destruction by Ashok during Kalinga war in 2200 years ago. Odisha govt never given importance to this place nor it got place in the main stream Odisha History. So Odisha govt should spend some of its budget for excavation of Jaudaga fort area. Many new sides of Kalinga history will come to light....

So sad that we are not able to keep a good care of it. I am really surprised that most people are unaware of these hidden 💎gems. If the place are restored and promoted properly we can fetch more tourist than rajasthan.

Awesome sir, i also visited this place in summer 2019 and due to my curiosity i had interacted with some local of that place. They told me that in every rakhi purnima all the near by villagers gathered in the place and by permission of ASI the iron gate of inscription opened and they perform the puja there . I asked about the time period - they told that for generations they are doing this ritual by worshipping the inscription of Ashoka- may be a strange phenomenon.
