I’ll always have love for Jasmine Guy, because when I saw her in the movie “School Daze” back in 1988, I wrote her a letter and asked her for an autographed picture. I never thought she would even read it, but shortly after, I received a 12 x 9 inch, gorgeous autographed pic of her in the mail. I still have it to this day. It’s still the most beautiful pic of her that I’ve ever seen. 🌹❤️

I disagree.. She had her moment, she recorded an album that flopped, she had her time in major motion pictures but she didn't connect with movie goers. She did Broadway as well... Her biggest competition was Vanessa Williams and whenever Vanessa ended up pregnant and couldn't accept a gig, they would call Jasmine.. Vanessa at one point was bigger than Halle Berry.. Not all Black performers will have equal careers.. Jasmine lack acting skills beyond the Whitley character for many years.

@@leonweech Yeah, we fail to recognize the great things people of color have done in the entertainment industry but yet love hopping on the narrative that Blacks aren't recognized for their contributions.. If we read some of the autobiographies of some of the White entertainers of the golden era of Hollywood, we'd know that many of them were treated like trash by the studio system and once these entertainers were no longer making money for the studios, the talent was kicked to the curb literally.. Hollywood is not an industry for sissies..

I wanted to go to Hampton because of a Different World. I was not able to attend because I got pregnant with my son. When he graduated high school, I encouraged him to take his football talent to an HBCU. College visits with him was such an amazing experience. He settled on Savannah State and I was ecstatic !! Unfortunately the pandemic cancelled the football program, but he stayed because he enjoyed the experience. Ultimately he joined the US Army… and today he’s an Army Sergeant WITH an HBCU experience! I love that for him! I will ALWAYS love A Different World for planting that seed for us ❤️.

I had worked hard to get her little black dress she wore for the shoot so it would fit her perfectly. With the help of a body double to represent, I took a risk and sized that dress smaller and shorter (sexier) than you would get off the rack. I almost died when she said to me thank you. So very sweet she was to me. She put me at ease from the pressure of the situation. I for ever remember how truly beautiful she is inside and out. She is the real deal. To me 62 isn't old. But I guess everyone's perspective on age is different. Carrol Burnett and Dick Van Dyke are in their mid 90s and still working. That being said, JG could have another +30 years!

Oh, my gosh. Her comment about being told her show was number two because it came between two other shows is shocking to me. I was a nerdy gay white kid in the suburbs of Northern Virginia, and I loved A Different World and it had a tremendous impact on me. I took African American literature and history classes in college because I was naturally interested in learning more about what I had learned from A Different World and *not* in public schools. The characters were funny, the performances were funny and often surprisingly moving, and the writing was bold, honest and informative. I think it was a hugely important show beyond being an entertaining one. And it's to Jasmine Guy's great credit that the show was created for the talented and stunning Lisa Bonet as a star vehicle and Guy's Whitley Gilbert transitioned from being a memorably scene-stealing cartoonish sidekick to thr heart of the show. (Although I have to say Charnele Brown's Kim is equally memorable in my mind. Some of her storylines and performances were unexpected gut punches.) And considering how diametrically opposed Guy's real persona and her Whitley persona are, she's a really striking talent who definitely deserved greater appreciation while this show aired.

After this along with the Kadeem interview, Ms. Guy has two of my favorite BC interviews and perhaps two of the best of the show period. The gems, the laughs and the untold stories have been top tier each appearance. Love how much 'A Different World' continues to be praised and influential on our culture.
