In this special event - part conversation, part personal reflection, part musical performance - Jaron Lanier exposes the toxicity of social media that is built into its very design. Lanier, the inventor of Virtual Reality, polymath across technology, art, and music, makes the case that liberating yourself from social media’s hold will transform your life and the world for the better. I really liked MySpace because it was designed for the users, there was even a whole music scene that came about because of it. When Facebook came out I hated it, the design was so generic and inauthentic. You basically have to define yourself through the lens of Facebook, they control what you perceive and how you’re perceived. They want to give all humans meaning, within their model. That’s one of the most terrifying dystopias I can imagine and we’re living it.

Had social media most my life, but deleted all of it 4 years ago after listening to Jaron here. Know what I miss most about it? Birthday notifications. If you delete, just make sure you write down the birthdates of your friends/family 👍
Advertising has been based around getting people to believe unnecessary things are necessary since forever.

As Tristan Harris says the problem is that it affects even people who don´t use social media. Maybe we need to practice some meditation and metacognition, be more in touch with nature.
