FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the late 1980s, Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) enlists as a Marine, training in boot camp under a sadistic drill instructor. Swofford undertakes a sniper course headed by Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx) during this time, which is shortly before the advent of the Gulf War. When the United States becomes involved, Swofford is shipped out, along with his spotter, Alan Troy (Peter Sarsgaard). Facing uncertainty each day -- about the war and home -- the soldiers try to maintain composure.

It's actually a pretty tragic line with a lot of layers to it because of how the US military recruits. Many of these recruits can't afford to go to college and they get lured in by the promise of a free college education and a lifestyle where they can better their quality of life. Many recruits don't realize what joining the military entails.

I encourage you to find your own path in life, and to remember that the experiences of the many will not constitute your own experience. The sad reality is that I and many veterans wanted something better than what was ahead of us. The military was our only option to attain the life we foresought for ourselves and we are better off for it in plenty of ways, but on the other side of that token, we're worse off as well. It's hard to come back to regular life when the world you know is a distant memory.

Somehow, some producer saw this intense war drama, in which none of the characters (who are all deeply psychologically traumatized by the process of being made into soldiers) ever fire their weapon at an enemy, and said, "I need to make three "sequels" to this where a shooty-shoot action man do a shooty-shoot at sum bad guis".

I've read numerous books, and heard stories from real soldiers who were deployed into combat, such as in WWII, some of whom were even caught in firefights, that never fired a single round at the enemy. Maybe because they couldn't bring themselves to do it. Maybe because they were more worried about surviving by hiding or running than shooting back. Maybe because they were full deer-in-headlights. Then there were many others who never actually saw true combat even in war zones. That's the real experience of many soldiers. Shoot-em-ups are more macho fantasy. Living a normal life after doing so is even more fantasy.

@@InitialPC have fun trying to get close enough to punch a soldier….. there’s a reason hand to hand has almost left military training. Guns. You don’t need to be good at hand to hand if they can’t get close enough to start it They only hand to hand training I received was how to make someone let go of you gun so you can shoot them. Which is only useful if you let them get close enough to grab your gun… which shouldn’t happen

The biggest problem with this is.....the drills are not allowed to touch you let alone physically hurt you. That went away in the early 80s. I was in the Army in the 90s. They couldn't touch us. Except on grenade day. That was the day their lives were at risk. I watched a kid pull the pin and throw the pin. The drill grabbed the grenade, tossed it over the wall, threw the kid to the ground and dove on top of him with his elbows. Broke the kids nose and cracked a rib. And yes that goes for Marines too. I trained with Marines at Fort Knox and they backed up my story for their branch too.

No one mouthed off any sarcastic lines when I was there, like the college remark in this Jarhead movie, or the John Wayne remark in FMJ. We did have one dude refuse to train on training day 1. MP’s showed up a little while later. Dude resisted. Didn’t see it because we were all head and eyes forward, but I heard what sounded like someone being slammed, and some whimpers. DI then yelled out “Eyeballs” SNAP SIR!!!!! everyone turns and looks to the DI’s direction near the MP’s. Then we all saw ole’ dude get drug out of the squad bay, whimpering, handcuffed by two Marine MP’s that both stood over six foot tall, both wearing bright yellow long length rain coats due to the weather. After the “portholes” slammed shut and ole’ dude was gone, Senior DI yelled out, “anyone else want to refuse to train?” SIR, NO SIR!!!! “Lock it up now” LOCK SIR!!!! head and eyes snap to the front.
