Japanese Yamabushi Monks in a Shugendo Fire Walking Festival

The Yamabushi are the mountain monks of Japan that practice an esoteric form of Buddhism called Shugendo. Shugendo's history and practices vary from region to region but the goal is the same; a spiritual awakening, achieved through rigorous physical practices often in the mountains under harsh conditions.
Today the Yamabushi monks, initiates and laymen walked through the fire lit by the coals of a sacrificial fire.
The festival is called the Renge Festival and was held atop Mt. Kongo which straddles the border of Osaka and Nara Prefectures.

Wow this is indeed comforting and inspiring to watch. It seems the monks have more experience with this ritual than the lay people. I hope the person who fell is ok.

Thanks for watching. Shugendo is not so well known or famous but its origins go back a long way so it’s interesting.

It was a good day out and a very interesting festival! I'm surprised I came away with just one small blister after the Hiwatari (fire walking); looking forward to trying again next year!

Thanks for watching! Considering some of the videos you made this would be right up your alley. The Yamabushi groups were very welcoming and happy to have people join the festival. They even seemed open to outsiders joining their group.

@@JapanExperiences Quite a few of the festivals around here are very outsider friendly. If you're around Kawachinagano in early October (and it goes ahead this year...) Nakatsuhara Jinja in Chihaya-Akasaka have a danjiri festival that anyone can take part in. Only a single 1 ton danjiri but you go up and down some crazy mountain roads with it!

Just find s group and ask to join them. The Yamabushi on the mountain that day were very welcoming and open to people joining them, including foreigners.

i wonder if its always been like that with women taking part, not that its bothering me yet still i hope that modern times will not interfere with something like this , i am surprised that they even let it to be filmed actually, yet grateful . I can see few of them walking with dignity mastering them self other are more like running , its funny in a way

Originally, it was just men who were ascetic mountain monks and shamans. Yes, even foreigners are allowed to join, and on the day I was there, encouraged to participate and possibly join.
