Japanese School Lunch: My Experience

My experience with eating Japanese school lunch as an ALT in the Jet Program. I took pictures of at least 30 of my meals and show them here. Japanese school lunch is healthy and it tastes good! Much better than American school lunch in my opinion.

I like how the kids help out at lunch. Gives them a sense of accomplishment and being part of a community.

Yes! Japanese kids help with a lot of things at school, like cleaning too.

My school memories were tainted a bit as the school owned a plum orchard. So during summer we had plum crumble, plums with custard, plum pudding, plums in a pie and so on for dessert. Cook's creativity knew no bounds when it came to plums. We hated them - probably because the plums always had stones in them! I believe I have avoided plums ever since :)

@ja da I have watched " Begin Japanology" , but not the " Plus series " . Thank you, I will be sure to check it out . My best friend has gone back and forth to a Tokyo Culinary school from the US , and we both have a great interest in learning Asian cuisine . He's a successful chef in the Pacific northwest area of the US , and I am just an enthusiast . This particular video caught my interest because the US public lunches that I had as a child are just obscene compared to Japanese school lunches and this episode confirmed it . I hope this lunch standard will one day be standard all over the world . Maybe not the style of food, but at least the same quality of care put into it .

You very flexible with all those rules -- spoken and unspoken. I suppose it would be rather difficult to be a nonconformist in Japan. What if a student or teacher is vegetarian or vegan? Would the school accommodate that?

It depends where you are and what you're doing there. Are you going to take classes in English in a big city? If so, you might be able to get away with only speaking English. But it helps to at least try and learn Japanese 🙂

@@logiebear Oh I see. I think you said in one of your videos that you're back in the USA now, do you miss your life in Japan or is this all still so fresh in your mind that you haven't had a chance to do that yet? I'm graduating this semester and am considering Japan, China, or Korea as possible places to teach English. Rural Japan looks lively I must say.

Japanese school lunch is the reason why kid's height is getting low and low over the year, per Japanese National Research. it might look ok, but actual portion is very small, very small for the rapid growing children. and very low in protein and calcium was the major problem. obiously it looks healthier than western food, and looks expensive because it is knida expensive to eat like that in Western countries. but in Japan, it is very cheap to eat like that. everything they put on youtube make me feel disgusted because my kids in school don't eat like that. Do you know why? because Japanese Government do not allow any news article or youtube that saying anything bad about the Japan or about their politicians.
