It's so weird to think that the violence censorship would be swapped today. It'd be uncensored in the US, but censored in Japan. Japan's rating system has gotten so much stricter the last 10 years or so.

I'm actually shocked the decapitated head is in the Japanese release. Hasn't decapitations in media been a huge no no in Japan since the 80's? It's why RE4's chainsaw death animation is censored.

I was born and raised in Japan. The difference between Japan and America is that Japan is much more strict when it comes to gore/violence but lenient when it comes to pedophilia. Don’t get this wrong, not that pedophilia is accepted in Japan, it’s in fact very illegal but it’s much more lenient when it comes to “publication” policy regarding pedophilia.

Regarding the button switch, this is still very common in Japanese games today. X (batsu) is a cultural symbol for "no" or "incorrect", where O (maru) means "yes" or "correct" (interesting that it's square here). Sometimes it's changed for the international release, sometimes it isn't -- see pretty much any Square Enix game -- but there's definitely an adjustment period for me when I switch between games.

A few side notes: -The PC version of Resident Evil had colors for the intro instead of being monochrome, it was also uncensored. The Director's Cut was supposted to have the uncensored intro from the Japanese version, but, i kid you not, they actually forgot to bring it over to the western versions of it, so instead, they left the uncut intro in a website to be downloaded. (Edit: I forgot the French version, for some reason, has the Japanese FMV for the intro...) (The German version of Director's Cut ALSO has an uncut intro, with color even! Which is weird when you think about it.) -The music in the cast part of the intro is titled "Icy Gaze", a full version exists, and you can listen to it in KZread actually, the intro cropped parts of it, and only used the parts where it uses english lyrics. -Despite being Japanese, the game is entirely in english in terms of voice acting, it however has captions in-game, there are no captions in other regions however, i think Biohazard Complete Disc added Japanese voice acting for FMVs as a bonus feature. -The Japanese Sega Saturn version has limbs that stays on the ground (until you leave the room of course), the Playstation version has limbs that simply disappear, was cut in the international versions of the Saturn version, and funly enough, a prototype of the Playstation version had that feature in. -Barry had a re-dubbed line for some reason in the Saturn version. (thanks Perene)

The Saturn has the cool Battle Mode with a lot of extras as an apology for the delays. Like a zombified Wesker, two Tyrant fight at the same time, etc. I personally spent a lot of time in this Battle Mode back in my childhood. Also another cool thing about it: Every single release of this game has different bonuses for when completing the game and nearly all are exclusive to their respective release (I'm taking into account re-releases), sadly nearly all are just different clothes aside the PC version, which has two extra weapons.

Actually the "clowns farting in the basement" music was not a problem with the music itself or the composition. It was a bug in the code that caused the wrong sound font to be selected. The Playstation used MIDI for music. Using the wrong sound font (instruments) can have rather hilarious results. There is a video where someone did nothing but correct the sound font, and it sounds exactly as it should.

@@scwintz101 Original mode in Director's Cut brought back the original ink ribbon count and dialed the enemies down to be almost entirely like in the original Japanese version (though for some reason reason they undid that in Dual Shock Edition). Hunters seem to be more fragile than in the original Japanese release and outside arranged mode, though. Also, auto-aim was brought back. The German and French Director's Cut versions don't have censored intros; which includes having them fully colored. Deadly Silence has the unaltered Kenneth death scene. It also has those background images for the files. The difficulty labels under Chris and Jill are included. There are two control options in Deadly Silence and the Japanese version defaults to the y button being used as action and b button for running. Though you can switch control options in both Japanese and international. The Japanese version of Director's Cut actually doesn't have the normal and hard labels in arrange mode.

I feel you could at some other time compare the Japanese and international Saturn versions to their respective pre-Director's Cut PlayStation counterparts. It isn't just a mater of the exclusive Battle Game mode or the Saturn version having worse models. For starters, the Japanese Saturn version uses the same character roll and ending theme from the international PlayStation version. It contains two unique costumes you can't find in any PlayStation release, Deadly Silence, nor the PC version. To make up for that, the PC port (along with Deadly Silence) has its own costumes. A couple of backgrounds were given tweaks that aren't just changing the coloration. In the catacombs, the Hunters are remodeled into the likely non-canon Tick enemy. There are two things to note. The first is that they have no qualms with using the decapitation move at close range. Also, they reduced the two Hunters to just one Tick in the room that Enrico dies at during Chris's story; likely for balance purposes. The Japanese version is even more ruthless than the Japanese PlayStation release, German and French Director's Cut, and the uncensored PC releases (with the English version being the only official uncensored release in the US). When Plant 42 kills Jill or Chris in the international editions, the screen fades to white like it usually does. However, the Japanese version actually shows the player character get sliced in half. Only the uncensored PC releases and Deadly Silence kept the animation fully visible. Also, it seems only the Japanese Saturn version shows the dead character getting devoured. The international versions have the zombie just stand there; which is also different from all other ports. There are a few scenes that have altered the character audio and modified one of the songs during a story moment. When Chris or Jill meets up with Wesker in the guard house, they added in an extra note to the music or tweaked a small part of it. During a run on Jill's bad ending, there is a secret scene you can unlock at the guard house. If the requirements are met, Jill will eavesdrop on Barry behind the door. Normally you can just hear Barry arguing at someone. In the Saturn release and PC editions, Wesker can actually be heard responding. A video titled 'Resident Evil (1996) - Barry voice differences (Saturn vs PlayStation)' demonstrates that. While a video titled 'Resident Evil - PC - Windows 95 Exclusive costumes and weapons for both Jill and Chris! + Bonus' not only demonstrates the Ingram machine gun I've mentioned elsewhere (with Chris's Minimi being nearly identical functionally), but after halfway through the video shows that Wesker can be heard responding to Barry just like with the Saturn port. Also, there's an alternate Barry line take after he kills off Plant 42 for Jill. One last thing, it seems they replaced the stairs walking animations.

Nah, you just hear about the times the Japanese version was harder. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason. Like in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance where Japan had Normal, Hard, and Maniac mode but the international release removed Maniac and added Easy. But then the sequel Radiant Dawn also had Japan with Normal, Hard, and Maniac and international had Easy, Normal, and Hard but unlike Radiant Dawn no difficulty mode was added or removed, so English Normal was Japanese Hard. This lead to Radiant Dawn in the west having one of the most infamous difficulty spikes between games in Fire Emblem history.

I still own an original US release of the PC version of this game, published by Virgin, and it restores a lot of the stuff that was taken out, including everything for the intro (Dead body, severed hand, Joseph's death, Chris lighting up, COLOR), the first zombie encounter head roll, images for the documents, and probably more stuff I can't remember right now. It's a shame that nobody has ever tried to do an update patch for this version of the game. ReBirth only patches the Japanese version.

Me and a friend wanted to install and play it. After we installed and started the game, it played the fully colored, uncut Resident Evil intro instead of the actual game. It must have been some kind of Easter Egg. I remember being shocked because there was so much violence and blood :D

Interesting that you mentioned Night of the Living Dead, 'cause George Romero and Resident Evil both have a pretty strong connection--the former once planned on making a movie based on the latter, before Paul W.S. Anderson eventually helmed the film series, with his eventual wife-to-be Milla Jovovich playing the protagonist. Additionally, Romero's script was initially going to focus on series icon Jill Valentine instead of the OC Alice Marcus. Today, we've got 2021's Welcome to Raccoon City, which itself is a reboot featuring Jill Valentine and the Redfields, and an upcoming documentary about George Romero's unmade Resident Evil film.

I liked the name Bio Hazard way more as a kid and thought it was more fitting but Resident Evil was so badass. RE 1 on launch was the first game I heard of an uncut Japanese version of the intro cutscene in color so we looked it up online on some shady website and it was so cool as a middle schooler to see. I had the OG released disc of RE and there was no auto aim or quick turn, So I got very good at spacing and aiming in the game, to the point that when versions of the game came out that had those put back in they felt like straight cheating. The newspaper intro difference always creeped me out more than just straight gore because as a kid I imagined monsters coming through my window at night and eating my family alive like they show in the papers ingame. What you don’t see is scarier than what you do.

Wouldn't be the only bit of music on a first party dreamcast game to border on plagiarism: the music that plays during matches in Virtua Tennis is made up of two sections that sound suspiciously similar to "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting" and "Mountainside" by Elton John and Wishbone Ash, respectively.

It's so strange and ironic to me the way things had to be censored for the original RE to make it into America, but then other things had to be censored in RE's home country for things like RE4's chainsaw kills. That opening cinematic is just amazing and I love it. But I also wanna say, maybe don't use AI generated images in your videos. There's a ton of lawsuits going on with regards to them, and they look cheap. Which was a huge contrast to the editing you went through for the intro comparisons -- and I laughed out loud at the lyrics, especially on Wesker omg.

Fun fact about the RE 4 censorship in Japan; its borderline ILLEGAL to show a decapitation in any media if it's done via bladed weapon in Japan. It's because of Japan's history with ritual beheading and its imperial ties. Its the same reason why a lot of Japanese media does not glorify the military unlike western media. In Japan, you can watch a character getting their head bitten off, shot off, torn off, etc but CAN'T show them being beheaded with a sword or, in RE4's case, a chainsaw.

I always found it interesting that there's a character in the game named Rebecca Chambers. For two reasons. 1. Years ago I wrote a story (that never got published) that had a character named Rebecca Chambers in it. The reason I named her that was she was meant to be a mix of the characters Diane Chambers and Rebecca Howe from "Cheers". I've never been very familiar with the Resident Evil games, so I didn't know there already existed a fictional character with that name. 2. I once met a woman who actually was named Rebecca Chambers. Like me, she wasn't familiar with Resident Evil either, and didn't know she had the same name as a video game character.

The Japanese Saturn version has its own unique artwork even compared to the other versions. The first version of Resident Evil in the US had not just the jewel case version on PlayStation, but also the earlier longbox edition. Safe to say the longboxes were not well made and Sony ditched them generally quickly. I also prefer how the jewel case version overall looks. Also, there's a White Label version for Europe on PlayStation. I also wonder why he can't just go with images if he's concerned about the budget. Heck, he has to also keep in mind there are big box editions in both Japan and North America for the PC version. There's even the lost White Label PC version for Australia (with the European version looking similar, but does not have the age classification sticker at the front nor does it mention 3DFX cards on the front). The main art on the big box feeling like a big post stamp. He might find it difficult to get the Japanese PC big box or even that White Label release.

Oh, yeah, Korea and China had their own box art for the PC release. Korea's big box is inspired by the North American Saturn box art, but has official art of Jill and Chris plastered next to the zombie. Also, the jewel case has the same Jill and Chris art in front of a white background. As for China, it was actually published by Ubisoft Shanghai. They seem to have two versions; one that's a very stylized take on the original Japanese PlayStation cover. The other inspired by the North American box art for the first version of Resident Evil on PlayStation. Both have white borders at both bottom and top. With the bottom white border having the tagline "Every adventure has a beginning". Also, it appears the CD came in an actual DVD case.
