Growing up in the UAE, we learnt about the pearl diving industry and the death of it in social studies. It's something that also moulded the UAE's outlook on oil as well.

yup, i can only imagine the paranoia that ensues when you’re going through a period of wealth on the basis of a finite commodity the second time around. Serves them well though i think, they are making a genuine effort to reframe Dubai as a new age media city and thus a tourist destination, much moreso than the saudis. The Emirate has a genuine stab at prosperity beyond fossile fuels, they’ll just have to invest their money wisely,

@@jonasghafur4940 Thing is it also depends on the emirate. Each emirate has a different strategy to meet the issue. For example, Dubai has a strong focus on tourism, logistics and trade and media, and recently also manufacturing. Especially with the new emiratisation policy its trying to achieve something closer to Singapore or better yet Germany. Even investing heavily in education and artificial intelligence. Idk how effective the latter is though. Abu Dhabi has gone full on in the manufacturing, artificial intelligence and education sectors with policies to ensure security with energy away from fossil fuels especially with the masdar initiatives. Ras Al khaimah has always had the strategy of slow steady growth. Being also the first place in the gcc to have open bottle shops and implementing thought out policies for social and industrial growth. It's one of the few places in the middle-east with a high concentration of glass manufacturing plants. Sharjah has the policy of become a centre of Islamic and education. Being the more conservative emirate and choosing to approach the problem much like Oman has. Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain are the relatively poorer emirates but have strategies to develop in supporting the logistics and access for the other bigger emirates. Finally, Ajman, being the smallest emirate focuses on commerce and corporate growth. Slow and steady is the name of the game for them as well.

Oh dude, I’m from Abu Dhabi, and let me tell you. My great-grandfather went from a guy owning 6 dhows, to dhow-sharing one with 40 other men, to just make ends meet, during the pearling season, between May-September, in the aftermath of the Great Depression, which coincided with the commercial success of cultural pearls by 1928. He passed-away in June of 1999, and he saw it all. I’ll never forget how much he appreciated things like AC, water bottles, and cold showers. He was born in the empty quarter during winter, spent his life diving for pearls, was tough as nails, and would join merchants on trips to India, Yemen, and East Africa. He witnessed WWI in Iraq and Syria, lived through the Great Depression and WWII impacts on Arabia, saw the end of slavery, when the British forces the local Sheikhs to abolish it, was there on March 28th, 1958, during the first gush of oil, helped transport the first barrels for export in 1966, saw the British leave, and lived through the unification by December of 1971, the Gulf War, and lived through the oil boom. He was a Pearl diver, merchant, camel rider, horse whisperer, mechanic, driver, oil-rig worker, and finally, a maintenance worker. He started working at the age of 9, believe it or not, which was very common throughout the world, not just our neck of the woods. He sure saw it all. We still have video tapes of his conversations of the old days. We probably have 680-minutes worth of footage. I think it would be worth digitalizing one day, and uploading them over KZread with subtitles for all to see. What do you guys think?

There was a big Japanese population in the North West of Australia who were mostly employed in pearl diving too. Towns in that part of the country often have Japanese cemeteries.

For a fascinating first hand account of the last of the pearl divers in the late 1930s, I highly recommend the book The Sons of Sinbad by Alan Villars. Last few chapters of this book are spent with the pearl divers, and gave a great first-hand account of their work. Without a doubt, one of the most entertaining books ever written.

I am surprised manmade diamonds haven't done the same, I guess there is just too much money there in real diamonds for that industry to collapse. Manmade diamonds kind of already have. you can buy cheap diamonds already, the issue is that there's a massive conspiracy to keep diamond prices high, so a lot of folks wind up paying a lot. There's also the really silly idea that you must pay a lot for jewelry, otherwise it isn't something to wear. But you can absolutely find diamond jewelry that's 1/10th the cost of natural diamonds or less. In industry, synthetic diamonds have already changed the market significantly.

From what i've heard the natural diamond mining industry is dominated by one big company, and they have lobbied to forbid synthetic diamonds calling themselves "diamonds", or something along those lines. I guess jewelers are too chicken to take the risk with a "different" product? Or maybe they can keep higher profit margins with the more expensive stock. It all seems very stupid.

Waters in the summer will go up to 32c or even higher, and 'cold' SST in winter is around 25-26c even over 3 metres deep. Cold to the locals used to it being like a bathtub most of the year, but downright balmy to any of us whom ever went the beach in summer at higher latitudes. Great video, the great pearling industry might be done... but am sure real Persian Gulf pearls likely command a premium over farm raised.

Complete multiracial multilingual living around the world all alone since childhood I speak fluent formal Arabic too, aside Dutch and so many other languages. Egypt isn't the oldest, even Egypt is very poor, very dry, far off the center of the Equator line. Most highest humidity on Earth: Indonesia, meaning many much older artifacts has decayed much faster than just few thousands years Egypt. And Judaism/Christianity/Islam are just the same dumb. Even most of people know nothing about much older ancient modern civilization here in Indonesia before mega eruption of Toba supervolcano of Sumatra 75,000 years ago. Including 25,000 years old Gunung Padang pyramid in Indonesia. Hindu isn't from India either. Original Hindu is Indonesia not in India. Hindu in India and in Bali are totally different Indus, Indo, Hindia, Hindu = Indus Islands = Indo Nesos = Indonesia. The same with Astrology came from Indonesia not by the Greeks, Egyptians nor Aramaic/Arabs/Jews. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are just frauds branches of modified Hinduism in India. Real Hindu came from Indonesia not India. Hindu, Hindia, Indus, Indo, etc = Indo Nesos, Indus islands, Indonesia over 17000 islands, exactly on the center of the equator line, the center of all civilization, all Indo around the world came from here especially because of eruption of Toba supervolcano Sumatra 75000 years ago bigger than Yellowstone USA, resulted today world's largest volcanic lake Toba Sumatra. Yet, world map is wrong since Mercator projection 1569, real Indonesia is Huge as Russia and even much richer than the rest of the world.

It is Persian Gulf not Arabian Gulf. This is the historic name of the Persian Gulf. There is no such thing as an Arabian Gulf
