    Hubby and I sleep on the floor. We are both over 70 years old. Can't remember the last time either of us had a back ache. We snuggle in at night, sleep very comfortably. I have a roll up thick mat I bought online from Jet. And feather quilts, medium weight on top. I fold one lengthwise, and 'slip' myself inside. Off to dreamland, pronto. People are forever telling us how energetic and great we look.

    Hi Cynthia😊 thank you so much for your comment. I am embarking on the futon world. I am a single woman 55 about 130lbs I am In an apartment. I got one that was cotton wool, And once I got it.. 74 lbs, decided it was too big and bulky. It's About six and a half inches thick and wanted something smaller with a topper. The shiki Bhutan is 37 to 40 lb and 3.5 in. can you tell me how thick yours is? Also I'm mostly a side sleeper in want to make sure that it's comfortable on my hips and shoulders. Can you tell me how yours feel? Do you have anything under your futon? Also do you have a supportive pillow that helps you? Thank you, Diane

    I have gotten the same response when I tell people I sleep on the floor too... doesn't phase me as I know what works for me. I too got the twin extra long and found I could have done with the standard twin. I'm so glad you like it and while I only use it every so often I mainly sleep on the floor with a yoga, sheet or folded knit blanket in the winter for warmth. It does change depending on my needs, but I have the approach, use what I have and I can sleep on a pretty firm surface, anything too soft bothers my back after 1-2 nights and then I transition back to the floor. All the best and so glad to hear your prospective :)

    Gotta fold up daily to prevent mold, also for those interested: don’t put directly on the floor or carpet, buy tatami to prevent mold (my tatami makes the whole room smell amazing like fresh cut grass. Once a week I sun mine, both the shikibuton and my foldable tatami. an hour to each side at this time I shake it out and “beat gently” to fluff it up and prevent a divot that forms from your body. Make sure to flip it every night too, foot to head every day to prevent uneven wear. Wash sheets and kakebuton cover once a week. 😎🖤

They also are in the us too which is helpful. That’s a good one, but if ur looking for cheaper I do have a travelmat tatami purchased from Amazon called BJDesign Japanese traditional Igusa (rush grass) tatami mattress. It runs $188 USD. It smells so good and I’ve used it nightly for about 2 years now since it’s lighter and easier to carry outside weekly. It’s strong and has held up well. i agree with nearly everything you've said , i've slept on a futon on the floor for 30 years ! but you should remove the bedding & roll up the futon ( lengthways ) daily to prevent mould growth . this only takes 1 minute & by doing this you won't have to do the monthly " sterilisation " ( which doesn't really sterilise anyway )

    The best sleep I've ever had has been from sleeping on the floor! Once I slept on a towel on hardwood, woke up with no pain at all. I remember the day because I was so surprised and haven't felt so good in the morning before. I used a "futon" roll up mattress from Amazon for 2 years, but the synthetic smell got really annoying. Now looking into something better. I spent about $500 on a western-style futon bed that wasnt as comfortable as sleeping on the floor, so I think I will bite the bullet and buy one of these imported from Japan. Might as well, I haven't slept well since getting rid of my floor "futon" from Amazon, I dream about sleeping on the floor again! PS. I don't sleep on carpet, due to asthma. Hardwood is my preference, with a foam pad under the floor futon.

    You can also find tatami on Amazon and similar. If you can locate authentic grass filled tatami rather than foam filled (very common) then you can enjoy the tatami scent much longer, for years. The foam tatami (since it is only a grass mat on outside that is real) lose the earthy scent quite fast.

    Excellent point, for sure, C Amoy. Although we do know of a tatami master's website that does ship abroad, freight can be expensive for just 2-3 tatami. Most of our customers order them online in their own country. These however, are often foam filled, instead of the traditional compressed grass-filled tatami. However they are much lighter to ship and still will last roughly 10 years if well taken care of.

    I guess that is why japanesse take off their shoes. Also, I think they use tatami and some other wood carpets to elevate it a tiny bit. But I guess the best options could be mantaining the floor clean, rolling the futon and using lysoforn from time to time. The type of fabric might be crucial too.

    I would LOVE a Murphy bed. In guestrooms and main bedroom too. swoosh ! : and then you suddenly have 3 extra free rooms for play, work and exercise!!! This is the allure of the futon also since it can be put away. It's probably not happening for me because my boyfriend is not into it. But it's nice to hear your opinion on this.really good way to do sleeping

    Great video :) we gave away our 30cm thick very heavy mattress and bed frame currently sleeping on a 3.5cm thick padded gym mat. My husband & I absolutely love sleeping on the floor best thing we did. Once we move soon we plan to purchase either a queen futon or 2 singles to put next to each other. Wondering if that would make it easier for moving, traveling etc. How thick is yours? The link wouldn't work for me probably because I am in Australia. The one we are looking at is 7.5cm. Didn't want to go too thick or make it bulky to fold up. We are also getting futons for our daughters and my 2 year old chooses to sleep every night straight on the carpet with a thin pillow. She won't sleep on her mattress haha 😂

    Bec Benson Great question! I would say it started out 5 or 6 inches thick and is about 4 inches thick now. I dont think it would be any easier to move than what you are doing now, your mat might be able to fold up tighter than the futon. Two singles might be slightly easier because it wouldn't be one big long thing. It is so cool that your kids are getting involved and want to sleep on the floor too :) I hope the full web address will work for you: www.futonbedsfromjapan.com/naia

    Hi, so for a really long time, I have been suffering from bad posture and poor sleep but gradually it has gotten better as I have done strength training and I currently sleep on the floor, but I noticed I will feel a little uncomfortable. I haven't woken refreshed in quite awhile, in fact I will wake up prettt tired. I'm really just wondering if like a futon is good for upper back pain. And just how thick is the mattress? I'm just afraid if i get, I might not like it. Im just afraid of getting things that won't work. I do notice how posture and stuff plays a big factor in everyday life and even as you sleep.

    +Kevin Huynh Hi Kevin! I went through about a month of discomfort but if you currently sleep on the floor and don't like it, the futon probably is not for you. It started out as 4 or 5 inches thick and since I use it every night and forget to hang it up, it is probably 3 inches thick now. I don't experience pain but I've never had pain. Chiropractors suggest a firm sleeping space with some cushion so experiment with elevating your legs using pillows and make sure your neck isnt over extended and that might help. You might need a bed with more support than me.

  • @Kevin-ms9eb

    @Kevin-ms9eb

    The Ethical Fox I think it was because I didn't have enough cushioning on the floor, its like just a blanket n some sheets, only problem was side sleeping. It took you a month to get used to? Didn't one of your videos saying you liked it on the first day? What about when you lie down on the futon, does it like sink down a lot to where to feel the floor? I just ordered one, like I found out that the perfect bed for me is just some cushion and a hard or firm surface under it.

    I've been hang drying my clothes and bedding for years. Only use a dryer in a rare time crunch. I suggest you lay the futon over the back of two chairs side by side with a fan blowing toward it while you are at work that day. Hang it outside when you have a chance. Anything helps to keep it dry and aired out. This is how I dry my down comforter in the winter months.

Or I buy a 90 cm or 120 cm for myself alone and when I ever get a girlfriend we buy another 90 or 120 cm futon. What should I do? I like to have some space because I move a lot in my sleep.
