Japanese Dude Endures the Pain of Breaking in Red Wing Iron Ranger

Ойындар

Hi, it's Kazuki!
Thank y'all so much for watching my last video!
• Japanese Dude Admires ...
I appreciate all the views, likes, and comments.
I have been wearing Red Wing Iron Ranger every day since the day I bought them. I am going though the hard and painful process of breaking them in.
I know it has been only 2 weeks of wearing them but still wanted to show you guys how my boots are holding up so far.
I hope you will enjoy my video!
God bless, America🇺🇸

You will need to wear a medium to thick merino socks and lace them up to the second to the top speed hook until it breaks in totally. Yes, love hurts lol. For conditioning use the RW leather cream to preserve the original amber color.

@@loneruggedkazukiI'd like to second this tip about the socks. I think you mentioned that they're your first boots in the last video and if you've only got thin dress socks or crew socks then keep that in mind too. Any slightly thicker merino socks will be way comfier. In these and my work boots I only wear slightly thicker socks and I definitely feel the harshness if I have to go a day in dress socks. Btw my Iron rangers did not have any hot spots but my 953s MURDERED my ankles. Put a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and water or the boot oil on the exact spots where they rub bad and it will greatly soften and speed up the process. Your videos are fun to watch and I enjoy seeing quite literally just a "Japanese dudes" take on American things and life.

Before I wear any new boots, I apply oil. I do it for a week. I use mink oil. You can use any brand. You can also use neatsfoot oil. Actually, Horween recommends using neatsfoot oil for their Chromexcel leather. Once the leather absorbs all of those coats of oil, the leather will be softer. Apply very light coats of oil. You don't have to use a lot.

@@loneruggedkazuki It's a good choice. I believe that Red Wing Boot Oil also has pine pitch and silicone. I use Fiebing's Mink Oil which is actually a blend of mink oil neatsfoot oil, silicone, and lanolin.

@@loneruggedkazuki I have used Red Wing boot oil. I have used Red Wing mink oil. I have used different brands and blends of oil. Just assume that all oil will soak into the leather and darken it. Then you wear the boot. The boot will bend and crease. You will develop your own unique patina, based around your feet. With wear and tear, whether you oil the boot or not, some parts of the boot will be darker. Since you are in Chicago, I strongly recommend a wax paste shoe polish. Maybe even bees wax for the winter. After the multiple coats of oil have soaked into the boot, sparingly apply very thin layers of carnauba wax shoe polish. Use as little as possible. Allow the shoe polish to dry about 30 minutes or more. Then sparingly apply another thin coat. The less shoe polish that you use, the better. It's tempting to add a lot of polish at once, but don't do that. You want to build up about 20 very thin coats of shoe polish. You can apply 3 to 5 coats of shoe polish a day, as you're sitting around after dinner. Do that every day for a week. The idea is to build up a nice base coat of polish for the winter. Then brush the shoes with a horsehair brush. Buff it to a light shine. This coat of Carnauba Wax Paste will bead off moisture and protect your leather from the rain, snow, and slush. I know that Safire is suppose to be good. But in the military and police departments across the country, Kiwi and Lincoln are the popular brands of shoe polish. In Chicago, during the winter, you will be brushing off and reapplying that shoe polish every day, just like police officers in uniform. Look into Sno-Seal brand bees wax for boots. You may need it. You may not. Trenton and Heath have a video on how to apply it with a heat gun.

Hope they’re getting better a couple months later! My iron rangers are my most comfortable pair of boots, probably followed by the 2015 RW Huntsman. The biggest issue with my IRs was the back was digging into my left leg. I ended up massaging that area with my hands and using a little conditioner to help. Roughly 6-7 years later, they’re still going strong, and I beat them up in the desert.

Just a word of warning. I used water to break in some Red Wing 875s and they dried with dark patches on them. The water redistributes some of the stuff in the leather and leaves them looking different than before. Not a huge deal, especially after they get some more character with wear but it will leave them looking less perfect than before you soaked them.

I have 3 Iron Rangers and never had a problem breaking them in. Took about 3 days of wear and they were broken in to the point where they were comfortable. In the boot world, these are one of the easier to break in boots. Sometimes it helps to loosen the boot and wear it around for a few days. That will help break in and soften the leather. In the end, yu just have to wear it and take the pain. It is kinda a boot right of passage.

The other about 6 months. They stopped hurting in a couple of days not weeks. You may have “soft feet.” I remember from basic training years ago some guys just have tender feet. It’s just the way you’re made. The good news is just as the boots break in your feet will get used to them as well. Give it time but take your time. Brush them every day. No lotion or oil. Wear two pair of socks. Thin dress socks with thick socks over them. Wear every other day. Not every day. Trust me. It’s counter intuitive but works faster. I truly don't know what people are talking about, I have four pairs of red wings none have given me problems. From the moment I bought them, they literally have been manageable. Maybe it's because all I wear are boots, that problem with the tongue is to just flip it forward . That's what I do with mine.

Yeah it's about the same. Here in the US where they are manufactured, it's about $350 (boots) and $80 (boot trees). I hope you are enjoying your stay! These boots are painful to break in but if you love the style and history of Red Wing, go for it!

Thick socks and lace em tight. You can't wear em loose like sneakers.... And also getting the correct size is key. I feel like I had both of my Rangers broken in within a week or so of daily wear

sounds like an abusive relationship. this video is the reason why I LOVE KZread. I wanted to treat myself with something special and thought about Iron Rangers. But after watching this video I am definitely NOT getting them. They seem to be purpose-built boots for hard labor and they require thick socks. for an office worker living and walking in the city it makes zero sense. with such thick leather there will be zero breathebility which is essential for the health of your feet. it is amazing that just a video on YT with only 404 subscribers can save me 400 USD. thanks for that man. I appreciate it. Your video about Thursday jacket was great too. Liked and Subscribed!

Thanks for watching! I work in an office too. I think it depends on what you want from the boots. Sure, I'd like my boots comfortable but for me I chose Red Wing Iron Ranger because "they look cool"! I don't think it needs to be this difficult to break in, but I'd just take it because it's the way thes boots are. It's been a month and now the boots are very comfortable. I'd say it is all worth the pain now!

In my opinion you are not tightening the laces enough. After 2 weeks of wear you should have much more of a lace imprint on the tongue. If I were you I would really do them as close to as tight as you reasonably can and try that for a week or so. I feel they'll break in a little faster for ya. Anyways, great videos! Keep them coming. Also on care, just brush daily with a horsehair brush and I'd buy the red wing leather cream or the saphir Medaille d'or oiled leather cream in neutral for conditioning 2 or 3 times a year. They both are neatsoil based and won't darken the leather.

    @loneruggedkazuki

Oh that actually makes sense! I have been loosen up the lace so they don't get too tight and prevents the pain, but it should help make the breaking in process faster! I'm planngng to buy RW's brush and leather cream sometime soon, and do my first "conditioning Red Wing Iron Ranger" video!

Grab some Bick 4 leather conditioner. Put a dab of that on the tongue of your boot. It will soften the leather and won’t darken your leather.

Wear boot socks and walk in them a lot. Red Wing has too long of a break in period for me. For out of the box comfort, I like Allen Edmonds, Alden, Thursday, and other brands if you're not using them for actual iron mining.
