I was lucky enough to receive a 2000 yen note from my local Bureau de Change - I collect World banknotes, and when I ordered 3000 yen as part of a larger order including US Dollars, Euros and Canadian Dollars in addition to the yen, I received one 1000 and one 2000 :) Quite an interesting find, since the note was pretty much as good as new.

In Japanese currency, two 50 yen coins is 100 yen. So you can see we have 6 kinds of coins in Japan, one hundred 1 yen coin equals a 100 yen coin. Five 100 yen coins equals a 500 yen coin. Just simple math, don't take it too complicated. Haha.
