--------------------------------------------
Traditional crafts in Japan, some of which has history of over 1000 years, have been inherited by committed craftspeople, from generation to generation, being handed down unique and specialized technique.
They have produced and updated their products to meet people's needs of the era, making the most of their outstanding ability to keep their products practical, useful and beautiful.
They make their products only in the way their production is sustainably possible, largely from natural material. It is largely because their operation started way before our modern lifestyle came along. In this age, with a lot of unreasonably-cheap, easily-disposable products (mainly made from plastic) available to people all over the world. Plus, as Japanese domestic market overall has been shrinking at such a fast pace, it has become no longer possible for them to keep production profitably, or even in a way they can make their living.
We, amazed and fascinated by the beauty and greatness of their technique and the way of thinking behind, are trying to support their operation, through re-updating their products to sustainably suit lifestyle of people today and introduce them to the broader market, outside Japan.
As one of the ways to achieve our goal, we are directly shooting their operation, so that as many people in the world as possible can share the same amazement as we felt when we first saw their operation with our own eyes.
----------
In this movie, we visit the site of bamboo fence manufacturing.
The craftspeople are from Nagaoka Meichiku, specialist of bamboo fence.
The fence is called Kenninji Gaki, named after a famous temple in Kyoto.
