    @@JourneyToTheCage honestly, it's a bit more exciting to outside eyes because people fly through the air very frequently, and that's basically an inherent guarantee. there's generally a lot more "what is even happening" when watching BJJ as an outsider. I have the credentials to prove it. I have no idea wtf is happening in either lol.

    I do judo and 5 minutes is a looooong time when you are on the mats...even when they are hand fighting, they are still using as much of their strength and leverage as possible. Add to that that throws take a lot out of both fighters and ground techniques are a steady drain as well. Judo is a sprint, not a long-distance race.

    @@marcosfarias7988 Honestly people go on about that but it didn't make a big difference. It was a lot of the same thing even with more attacks a available. At this level, these guys are professionals in very competitive programs. They don't want to lose their funding or spot on the team, so they play it safe. The only way to change it is reward attacking play more instead of penalising negative play. The current approach encourages strategies around shutting the other guy down, rather than encouraging lots of committed attacks.

    @@emperorjimmu9941 Judo wasn't exciting when leg attacks were allowed. It was the similar sort of thing. IMO one idea would be to reward attacks instead of penalising for negativity. It's too easy for these guys to trap their opponent so they cannot attack, and then watch them wrack up penalties. Another controversial idea is to change the scoring system to make it more like BJJ. No more ippons. People get 5 points of an "Ippon throw" but it doesn't end the match, 3 points for a wazari throw, 1 point for every 5 seconds opponent is pinned to a max of 5 points, then the ref stands them up again. Only way to get and instant win is a submission.

I noticed in the first match, the Korean had a higher yellow bar than the Japanese man and the Japanese man won the match. So, is the yellow bar some type of penalty?

  • @TheDevilThatYouKnow1

    @TheDevilThatYouKnow1

    +Dylan Compton it's a penalty for passivity aka failure to attack. In judo competition you have to constantly be on both the defensive and offensive. If you sit back and do nothing you will get a penalty. there are many other types of penalties that will result in a yellow card, such as illegal grips or other things. but 95% of the time they are penalized for not attacking at the end of the time if there is no score or tied score, whoever has the least penalties wins.

    It just comes from people not knowing what they're looking at. Grip fighting might not look like much, but everything hinges on it. Then again, I can see why it would look boring to casual observers. If they'd allow more time for newaza - say, a solid 15 seconds- (and allow various jime and ude garami!!!) it would be much more interesting to me. But that's what they have Kosen for, I guess. EDIT: By "to me" I meant that as my opinion from the perspective of others. I love every aspect of grappling; even the fine details.

    if IJF is banning leg grabs then they should allow more time for ground fights or have the final match a ground fight to decide who breaks the passive penalties bullshit

    If the victory or defeat of Judo is determined by the "Jido" of the umpire, many people will feel like a Judo is boring game.

    what's "jido"? and yes Taekwondo has the same problem, karate depends on the school but a lot of those far eastern martial arts can be more interesting if the the win condition is clearer (like in Sumo) where the umpire has more of a ceremonial role and everyone can see who won and how they did it.

    People underestimate Judo all the time. I’m a Jiu Jitsu player who cross trained Judo for a month before a tournament and wound up taking gold. I got spanked by everyone and their mother at the Judo academy but saw a huge difference against Jiu Jitsu guys.
