Japan Spirit and Form #7: Women in Ukiyo-e

“Women in Ukiyo-e” is the seventh episode of the NHK series, “Japan: Spirit and Form” and offers a broad overview of the portrayal of women in the art of different cultures over a period of roughly 2000 years before settling, in its last 20 minutes, on the depiction of women in woodblock prints by Japanese artists in the 18th and 19th centuries. The episode travels to Paris, Rome, Florence, Athens, Vienna, West Germany, and India before coming back to Japan. Host Shuichi Kato appears on camera, often on location, to provide commentary throughout the episode. Japanese artists featured include: Suzuki Harunobu, Maruyama Okyo, and Kitagawa Utamaro. European artists featured include: Botticelli, Titian, Vermeer, and Klimt. There’s a seamless flow to the editing and selection of images in this episode that makes it one of the most enjoyable in the series. Narration in English by Ashley Thom. Music by Akira Mitake.

    The ladies being photographed in the beginning are stunning! They're so beautiful, like living Nagel paintings lol

    Kato was wrong about Greek art. The male figure was was considered the standard of physical beauty in ancient Greece and MANY more male figures were produced in their art than female figures.
