BYD is not "Cell to Pack". It is "Cell to Body". Tesla has a heavy pack case filled with rigid foam to make a structural pack. BYD uses cells that make up the structure. Not a copy, but a significant advancement.

The BYD founder lost his parents when he was very young and was raised by his older brother and sister in law. Japan should ask us here in the U.S. about Detroit. Detroit felt very much like the automotive capital of the world for decades, but when the American auto manufacturers got complacent, Japan out-competed with better products that were more in line with what people needed and wanted. The American companies scrambled to catch up, and in the process moved their manufacturing plants away from Detroit. By the end of the 20th century, Detroit was a hollow shell of its former self and to this day continues to suffer from massive poverty, infrastructure neglect, and social disillusionment. The thought of this happening to Japan is terrifying.

"Complacent" is a pretty interesting way to describe it. Japanese and German automakers benefitted from state directed credit, tariff and non-tariff barriers, among other things. What you call "complacency" is just America's failure to protect its auto industry.

@@traviskniffin5578 Whether you protect or not protect your industry you will still have to make a good product to be able to compete. This was what US companies in the sixties/seventies FAILED to do. The attitude was "the dealer will handle the production defects". I can remember the stories of car workers NOT inserting corosion protection into the beams during production to "save time". Not to mention about the drugs use and drigs dealing in the factory. The complacency was the arrogance/belief that they were still making "the best cars in the world" while objectively everyone could see the cars were overpriced and BAD due to outdated production techniques.

Hi from Thailand! Interesting video, just FYI BYD are doing really well here in Thailand for some reason. I don't own one myself but they are selling so many Atto 3 cars. No idea how they are convincing so many Thais to buy one, must be good financing or something as there aren't so many chargers here. But there are so many dealerships popping up and BYD are building this huge factory in Rayong, opening next year.

@@thatsawesome2060 Yeah that's probably a smart idea to wait a while. I don't own an Atto 3 but there are so many in Thailand now and a few owners definitely have concerns about how much the batteries cost. I saw a TikTok where one owner was saying the Atto 3 costs 1.3 million Thai baht, but he crashed it and was quoted 800,000baht to replace the battery. I'm not sure how it works with insurance, either the insurance premiums are crazy high or the insurance company doesn't cover the entire cost of replacing the battery. But it's definitely something to consider before deciding whether to buy an EV.

For those who doubt BYD will be the king of EV, completely ahead of Tesla not just in sales (already sold 1.4Mil in last 6mths) but also technology, i recommend to read up BYD SUV U8 & supercar U9. These leading technologies will be leverage by other cheaper models gradually. BYD battery, EV and suspension/ chasis technology is already on top range without rival. Its 300 strong design team lead by ex-Audi chief designer, designers of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mercedes… have bring its design to world class, with luxury high quality interior. Its assisted driving IOT system in partnership with technology leader Huawei, is No1 best using radars instead of Tesla outdated image technology. Search Huawei Avatar car. And BYD price is just a fraction of West EV. So far UK & EU high tariffs and distributor cost has inflated China's EV price by 2~3x, yet they are still competitive. When trade agreement eliminated tariffs in future, it will be a bloody slaughter.

More due to Tesla being like 5 years ahead. Most others can't build the batteries fast enough. The lead is already slipping some and soon others manufacturers should be better placed in the space. But, it's not due to the lack of imports, it's mostly due to the fact that Tesla has a much higher production and actually makes a profit on their cars (losing money per vehicle does not encourage manufacturers). But, if anything can really steal Tesla's lead it's exactly what BYD is doing here, copy them but do it better.

Since brand competition is always good for the consumers among virtually any products.

Interesting video. Both BYD and Tesla outperformed in Q2-2023, but clearly BYD is larger, In the second quarter, BYD's NEV sales were 703,561 units, up 98.17 percent year-on-year and up 27.44 percent from the first quarter vs. Tesla selling 466,140 up 83% year-on-year and up 10% from the 1st quarter. It's possible by the end of this year that BYD will sell double the number of cars that Tesla sells. I think however, that BYD has a geopolitical problem more than an engineering problem. They may well be better built cars than Tesla, and I believe they are. However, BYD is selling a tiny number of cars outside of China, and it's questionable if they can ever enter the US market. In addition it's entirely possible that Europe won't buy their cars in large numbers, because the brand isn't well known and Europeans tend to value brand over engineering. If they ever do become very popular in Europe, it's also likely that Europe will put punitive tariffs in place. India will block them if they ever become too popular. I suspect BYD will do well everywhere else, but those tend to be less developed nations, which limits their options and forces them into the lower priced/lower margin segment of the industry. I believe Tesla should not compete directs against BYD in the lower value segment of the market, I think they will lose. My suggestion to BYD is that they need to buy a European brand to sell their cars into that market, similarly to what SAIC is doing with MG.

If you get that severe of an intrusion to the frame and it compromises the frame or the casting, the vehicle is totaled… Ford, Toyota, Mercedes, Volvo… It doesn’t matter. It’s done for.

@@robertvadjinia126 Clearly the OP thinks that any other car will just be fixed quickly and cheaply. Only Tesla will be "totaled" making EVs far too expensive because you can't repair them. Just one tiny dent, entire front end crushed, from a minor accident at 65mph will remove the car from the road!? Garbage.

A better comparison to the BYD Seal will be the pending Telsa M3 Highland. No way to know for sure until it releases, but I think the Highland will come out on top.

Not sure the Seal tops the M3 right now, never mind after the M3 Highland release. The only media source saying so is biased in a nationalist protectionist way. Japan as a whole has good cause to be worried about their automotive future; this is their all-hands-on-deck existential moment.

Were these 'engineers' perhaps in the pay of Toyota, with an axe to grind.? Still, I like the Seal, can't understand why they don't sell more.

The company that adopts revolutionary multi material integrated printed structure/shell/components that absorb energy stores energy and eliminates traditional manufacturing practice will win - especially when the breakdown of its design is beyond replication without the blueprints and having factories with a fraction of the area or staff , Even Tesla has a long way to go - perhaps with their improving philosophy they will be the first ? Because In wheel motors will become simpler lighter and more efficient they are the future without doubt .

BYD Seal is now selling VERY well according to China's September and October sales figures though certainly true it was low at the time your video was made..... That was never a problem with the BYD Seal, though rather its sales figures. Calling it a problem of the model seems to fall under the category of FUD...... Unless you were referring to something else?

Long term BYD will take over tesla with ease. The Chinese will dominate ev production and tech.. look at all the companies CATL BYD, LI, GWL etc.. They even own the lithium industry and are filing more patents. Tesla is extremely overvalued compared to BYD which they happen to actually buy their batteries!

the japanese are full of it at the moment. Japanese and Korean cars are so much behind the fast pace of tesla. Just look at how they are put together, 500 parts when 10 would do the job. Clean lines that are easy on the eye and to manufacture. Look at any Toyota body front end. Its made of close to 20parts at all sorts of crazy angles......and it all has to be put together......time means money. This is the genius of Tesla, manufacture at scale taken to a new level. Japan wants to get back to basics, remember why they became the bohemoth they are.......great products at cheaper prices. However, they then stood still . Cheap Japanese cars are now an oxymoron.....just not cheap and hard to find. The great disruptors in the car industry are Tesla and the Chinese. They say they are building cars their customers want. I say they are building cars they WANT their customers to want. The take up of EVs just spits in the face of their logic. Nobody wants hydrogen powered cars. Nobody wants to be beholden to a power / commodity supplier. EVs are the closest thing to self sufficiency. As more power from renewables becomes available, the closer to zero running costs EVs will present. See Tony Seba.

Japan also has more tourism revenue than most countries and is a fantastic country to visit. They also have one of the more advanced train and subway networks in the world, just ride the JR lines sometime and Osaka was rated one of the top ten cities in the WORLD to live. You are blowing this EV nonsense way out of control. Japan has an advanced integrated transportation network, just visit the Kyoto station and witness yourself. Cars are not that big of a deal as a primary form of transportation. Let’s get real.
