They weren't really given any choice. The Japanese royals are allowed no independence. Their lives are run by the Imperial Household Agency, and then there was the media onslaught and the attacks on the groom. The only way they could get any peace was to forgo a large wedding (not that Japanese princesses really get them; Mako's aunt Sayako certainly didn't), refuse the payment, and leave the country.

@@oki1349 Meghan and Harry didn't want a "quiet life". They wanted to control their own narrative. Given the UK's vicious and vitriolic tabloid culture and its attacks on them, I don't blame them. Japanese tabloid culture is similar, and Mako and her new husband are trying to escape it and the attacks made on THEM.

The Japanese royalty treats their status as honor, duty to country and, responsibility. They don't use it for any other purpose. I don't think Princess Mako will do interviews, put up a company and cash in from her title and status.

If they were engaged in 2013 and not married until 2021, then their love has stood the test of time. This was not an impulsive move. @@gelsm8709 Their wedding was postponed for 3 years because his mother took 36,000 USD from her ex-fiance which he used to pay part of his tuition fees. His mother said that she thought the money was a "gift" but like if you're not rich who gifts another person 36,000 USD even if it's cumulative and not a lump sum? And like even if she did think it was a gift once he made it clear that it wasn't shouldn't they simply just pay back the money and call it good instead of dragging it like they did? I don't think the ex-fiance is a saint though. Supposedly part of the reason she also gave up the money Japanese women receive upon leaving the royal family was because of all of the scandals involving him and his family.

It is just so UNFAIR for Princess Mako to be compared to meghan. Princess Mako wants a quiet life, not interested with money, will never trash her family and her husband actually has the education/capacity to earn money.

I have nothing to say about Mako ( she’s no longer a princess) except that choosing a quiet life and not trashing your family does not make one a good person or a saint. Who said she is not interested in money? Giving up on money that the public didn’t want her take doesn’t mean she’s not interested. She has never lived without money in her 30 years so trust me, she will have to make money somehow, like the rest of all commoners. I have lived long enough to know that things change unexpectedly and one should never be too sure about who people are and what they’ll do in the future. Never be too certain about people in general, especially those who live in secrecy because you don’t even know what has been kept from you.

Yes, they are so sunny and fresh, I am in love with them ! A love that survives huge difficulty is a great love. The way they look at each other is so touching.

She is what you call genuine and caring person.

So they are not going to shit on the Japanese RF. They are actually capable of earning their own livings by working, and she won't be using titles she previously had as a member of the RF. She seems very keen to stay on good terms with her family and left showing genuine affection for them. They have done things very slowly as they were not trying to upset family or even the Japanese people but still wanted to be together. It's clear they have been through a lot and have faced a great deal of criticism and negativity, but have remained very considerate of the effects their actions will have on others especially her family and it's position in Japanese society. Good luck to them not really comparable to Harry and Meghan.

There is no comparison between these two couples. Princess Mako will lead a quiet life and not say ugly things about her family, not taking that payout says much about her character. It's sad she can't remain a princess but I admittedly don't understand the Japanese Royal Family. I know it's ancient going back thousands of years, even longer than the British royalty and they have an Emperor which is so cool.

Absolutely NO COMPARISON Japan’s PrincessMako did not accept money, and fully and completely stepped down from her title and duty. Something Meghan Markle would never ever do it abide by a form of HONOR. Japan wrote the book on Honor, and abiding. Let’s make that clear. Princess Mako is a Real Role model and a woman of Dignity to look up to Which is another thing MM will never be.

Harry wz given £2.5m in the Summer of 2020 to start his new life & yet lamented that he had been financially cut off by his family. Wish Harry's wife wud do the same when she actually preaches about poverty & that every body should chip in to their Archewell Foundation? How much did that red ill fitting dress cost, which wz so inappropriate to the Veteran's ceremony on Armistice day?

I truly respect Princess Mako for handling the situation properly. The fact that she rejected the $1 million dollar payout only shows where her heart really is. She handled the criticisms with class and dignity. As a Japanese person, I believe that Kei is not the right person for her, but I wish that I am wrong and that the Princess will live a fruitful, private life.

One was not a princess from day 1.

Harry and MeGain can’t hold a candle to Princess Mako who actually declined taxpayer money/the money her family were going to give her after giving up her title. She actually gave up her title while Harry and MeGain continue to use their titles and demand royal perks without doing the work. MeGain placed her royal title front and center on her children’s book. That says enough about her.

For heavens sake, she’s someone who stayed back in S Africa while Harry went on tour alone to Lesotho etc - and while Harry was gone she hosted events where she charged people - including a 30-minute lunch with businesswomen where she earned $250,000. And she wore designer clothes which she got for free via her stylist but charged Prince Charles full price and pocketed the cash. Hardly royal behaviour. Royals attend events to bring attention to worthy causes, but Meghan refused to attend events unless they had A-listers attending.

The question would be, why didn't her family approve of her choice? What if it has nothing to do with being a commoner? I hope he doesn't hurt her.

I have the utmost respect for the two of them. They have taken their time to make this decision and even their wedding was not a royal wedding confirming that their desire is for a more private life. And for her to have turned down the government payout is truly remarkable. I hope they have a long healthy life filled with joy and happiness.

This is what true love is all about. I wish them the best.

Their parents had scandals to cover a lifetime and still do currently so it was in their best interest to not remind the public. I’m 60 years old and have seen quite a few royal scandals. I even remember when these two princesses were born. I watch from a distance and remind myself that they didn’t do anything to earn their positions, they were just born into them so there’s nothing worth elevating or destroying, they are just flawed like all of us.

This just proves yet again everything is not perfect behind the Palace doors. I love that these four young people chose happiness over titles. I love it the pure wonderful humanity of it all❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
