Japan's First Super Hero - The History of Golden Bat

Фильм және анимация

Before Superman, Before Batman, before One Punch Man, before My Hero Academia, before manga, comic books, before anime as we know it, there was a laughing skeleton that stood for justice, and he may be the most historic superhero of all time. In this video Kenny Lauderdale (me), breaks down the entire anime history of Golden Bat, from the Series to the movies, to his multiple pieces of lost media. I might have gone a bit overboard with this one, but Golden bat influences anime so much it's kind of crazy. Known as Fantomas, Fantaman, fantasmagorico, ogon bat, ougon bat, & a bunch of other names; this superhero series might have the record for Anime Firsts. First manga? Kinda. First SUBTITLED manga? Yeah probably. Even Steven Universe's Lapis Lzuli takes inspiration from this series (or maybe it's a coincidence, argue about it). He pioneered manga with kamishibai, & anime might not even exist without him, not in the same form anyway. He might even be the first tokusatsu character, & the first rider if the rumors of his 50s film are true. Japan's first super hero is here, & he's a laughing skeleton wearing a cape.

Hey everyone! I helped Kenny out a bunch with the research and script editing for this video! If you want a full list of the media mentioned, here it is: 黄金バット 摩天楼の怪人 / Golden Bat: Phantom of the Skyscraper (1950 film) 黄金バット / Golden Bat (1966 film) 黄金バット / Golden Bat (1967 anime) 紙芝居昭和史 黄金バットがやって来る / Kamishibai Showa History: The Golden Bat Is Here (1972 film) 검은별과 황금박쥐 / Black Star and Golden Bat (1978 animated film) 스타짱가2 슈퍼 베타맨 마징가V / Star Changa 2: Super Betaman Mazinger V (1990 film) 영구와 황금박쥐 / Young-Gu and the Golden Bat (1991 film) 黄金バット MILLENNIUM VERSION / The Golden Bat: Millennium Version (2003? anime short) 牙狼 - GARO - (2005 TV series) There's a few things we cut for relevance and time, like "Dark Bat", Bat's rival in the '67 anime; or the monster Belobog in Shin Megami Tensei "if" having a cape and cane in direct homage. We found a lot of the history stuff on a Japanese Golden Bat fansite, "The Sarcophagus of Atlantis" (ogonbatter.web.fc2.com). Turns out there's a TON of pre-war Golden Bat kamishibai by different artists, all stemming from the original, created by Ichiro Suzuki (not that one), and drawn by Takeo Nagamatsu. However, thanks to the war and less-than-ideal storage, not many original kamishibai survived the bombings. The ones you see nowadays are largely either brand new or reproductions of old ones. Give that site a look if you're interested. Kenny was really great to work with, and I hope to work with him again on future videos!

The different iterations of the character in media, different names for different languages, the inability of the franchise to get a new mainstream outing despite its popularity while also being one of the more obscure characters and also managing to be referenced action serieses to this day, and the unfortunate amount of lost media, ironically adds to the feeling of legend and mystery of the character both in canon and real life.

As you mentioned it, Golden Bat is known in Latin America by the name of "Fantasmagórico" and he is my dad's favorite hero of all time. Ever since I was a child, he told me the stories about this golden skeleton guy knight who emerged from the tears of a young lady in distress in the shape of a bat, and how powerful he was. He also mentioned his maniac laugh and how he wore a cape identical to Dracula's. For years, I've been trying to find some info on this character, but the only thing I could find was some of the very few remaining latin spanish dubbed episodes on youtube, because it seems the rest were burned in a fire caused by the 85s earthquake in Mexico City. If I knew his true name was Golden Bat, my research could've led me to him sooner. My dad has stated that ever since he watched this show, no other superhero have ever surpassed him before his eyes, and now I know he was saying the truth. Indeed, Golden Bat may be the greatest superhero of all time... Dad will be so happy to know his favorite superhero has such an important legacy :)

@@MinatheRaichu Thank you all for your kind comments :) Yes, I told him about this and the true origins of his favorite hero. He was very happy to know he came to existence prior to all the other superheroes, and a bit surprised too. Now that I brought it up to him, he told me one big reason he loved Golden Bat so much was because "he didn't talk at all", giving him a more genuine and solemn image. I strongly believe my dad is very fond to the idea I like to call "The essence of the hero", which part of it is the capability to speak beyond words through actions, and I believe Golden Bat portrays that idea very well. He asked me if I could find the series for him, but unfortunately the original Latin Spanish dub version is lost. I found the complete series in Italian dub, perhaps I could make some Spanish subs for him.

Wow! I grew up in Baja California, Mexico in the 70's and my brothers and I used to watch this show on local TV. It was called Fantasmagorico and was dubbed in Latin Spanish. Whats more, a friend from school had a plastic figure with a detachable cape and baton! I remember asking hims where he got it, but that was so long ago that I can't remember what my then, friend at primary school answered. You had to wait until transmissions started at about 1 O'clock in the afternoon everyday. Every time the local TV channel would start transmission, an off-voice anouncer would read the whole listing of shows, soap operas, news programs, etc for that day, so I would stay every day and listen to the listing and see if Fantasmagorico or any other TV show of my liking would be showed that day! That was back then. I remember going to one of the local movie theaters and watching a full 2 hour long movie about Fantasmagorico, I must have been like 7 or 8 years old back then and my father took my brothers and I to that screening... So long ago, like 1972 or 1973...

And alumni that statistically worked on or around the original projects, and some insight into the directors original story beats. After seeing Devil Man Cry baby, I'm convinced the "weird anime" period has so much untapped potential and legacy just waiting to be brought into modern anime. Maybe not as direct adaptions (a lot of them were pretty LSD fueled and marginally coherent by the last half), but many can be reworked to keep what made it unique, and build a working story around it.

I grew up in Japan with this. One of, if not the, coolest characters. It was kind of a joke, because the mysterious girl would call him by saying, "Bat-san, help us" (Kohmori-san, tasukete), which became a jokey catch-phrase for us kids when things were screwed up. But the Golden Bat was never anything but the coolest. All he did was laugh that sinister laugh (which was something everyone mimicked as well) and kick butt. Everyone from those days knew the opening lyrics from the cartoon: Where, where, where does he come from, Golden Bat? Only the bats know. (Doko, doko, doko kara kurunoka, Ogon Batto? Kohmori dake ga shitteiru.) Ah, memories! LOL

One fun fact not mentioned in this video: before Golden Bat, there was a series of kamishibai featuring the protagonist named "Kuro Batto" (Black Bat) who is a bad guy and a phantom thief. In the final chapter of the series, he is beaten by Golden Bat who appears out of nowhere and is even stronger than Black Bat. It was the debut of Golden Bat, and the sequel featured him as the protagonist. The original kamishibai was lost during WW2 and there are no surviving images of how Black Bat actually looked like.

7:38 little bit of an _excursus_ here. The italian translation of Golden Bat's name, "Diavolik", could (and most likely is) a reference to a famous italian comic book series, "Diabolik". This comic, which has become a nationwide beloved piece of culture here in Italy, was so famous that the creators of Golden Bat probably wanted to ride on its wave of success, but it's also worth noting that Diabolik first released in 1962. The other name, "Fantasmagorico", just means "phantasmagorical" by the way.

We used to do his laughter to celebrate an unlikely sports comeback, a zinging witticism or any other turn of events. I believe that the girl summoned him when distressed and I also recall an object that contained him (amulet or pendant) but that memory is fuzzy. Also, Dr Nazo’s name in the Latin Spanish dub was “Doctor Cero” and he would scream “Ceeeeeeeerooooooooo” when he was in his game.

@Virtual Sky Tate Dude, I'm also an atheist but people like you are absolutely *insufferable.* Can't you just respect people's beliefs without resorting to backhanded remarks and getting into flame wars every time you dip your keyboard and press enter? That shit isn't hard to do, you know.

@Virtual Sky Tate I'm not trying to label you dude, because that's literally what you are: An atheist who decides he's not going to be forced into believing in religion while forcing your principles and beliefs onto other people, and you genuinely believe that what you're doing is actually helping people when a big reason why people are religious is because it helps them. Being a self-righteous prick about what you are and what you want people to believe isn't helping anyone be a better person here.

Apparently the ending of Golden Bat has him fighting in Nazo’s base and, after an explosion, is killed defeating Nazo, with both his broken cane and Nazo’s robotic hand being left. You could say he didn’t die as it doesn’t show it but it heavily implies he is dead. So I suppose explosions can kill him?

Wow! It’s Hwang-Gum Bak-Jui! I remember the music from the show. It was very popular in South Korea. The bootlegged design of Golden Bat in South Korea had me thinking Golden Bat and Batman were the same character until I was 12. Thank you for doing this show. I love this!

If you want to me technical, “Golden Bat” would probably be considered the first “Modern Superhero”. The first “Superhero” would be considered “The Epic of Gilgamesh”. The first recorded hero of literature. He had supernatural powers, fights “evil”, goes on epic quests and adventures and even learns lessons that make him a better leader and person when he comes back hime from his adventures.

Gilgamesh would not be considered a "superhero" as that's a modern term. He would just be a "hero". It's a very different type of story.
