Japan Bike Trip #3 - Cycling Across Honshu (2017)

Part 3 of my Japan bike trip! I cycle from Sendai to Tottori via Tokyo and Kyoto.
First, I visit some tourist spots like Ouchijuku and Nikko, then stop in Tokyo for a few days.
From here I take the busy route from Tokyo to Nagoya, then get into the countryside, cycling along lake Biwa before finally arriving in Tottori, my old hometown.
This is the 3rd video from my Japan bike trip.
In summer 2017, I finished my job and set off to cycle Japan from north to south. Cape Soya to Cape Sata.

Been really enjoying your videos. You must have a nice setup as smooth riding. Loved your Hokkaido one also. We did it 5 years ago and going back in July. Once we cycle Hokkaido and cross to Honshu we thought we would end in Sendai and go to Tottori! Might be too much travel to get th

Wow you really put in the miles per day.. and night 👍😀. I know they say it's not recommended but I always do it anyways commuting home from work or early dark mornings. I usually have the busiest roads to myself before sunrise. Not too bicycle friendly here.I noticed in Japan there are many public parks (not real camp sites) that I plan on camping if it is allowed. Spectacular Mt. Fuji view! Great ride Ciaran!

I think the drivers are usually quite bicycle friendly, and the roads are quite wide compared to Ireland. But there were some roads where the drivers were passing too close to me. One of the great things about travelling by bicycle is that you can see every sunrise and sunset! Just make sure you wear reflective clothing and have bright lights!! I stayed in many public parks and it was okay! I even camped in Beppu Park which was right in the city.

Wow route 1. I know you didn't have much time but that is crazy! But I'm glad you put that out there so anyone planning to bike pack around Japan knows to AVOID THIS ROAD!! Great content by the way :)

I work on route 1 and it, like most other Japanese roads, is simply NOT designed with cyclists in mind. At all. There may be a few lanes for cyclists but it’s a hodge podge situation. Frankly, after living here in japan 23 years I wouldn’t cycle the length of a single prefecture, let alone all of Honshu. For those that do it, like you, well done!!! You have courage and motivation

Yeah, it makes it so easy to do a bike trip. The free/cheap campsites are amazing, but if you're ever stuck in really bad weather you can usually find an internet cafe or somewhere cheap to crash for the night.

They've somewhat recently completed a Pacific cycling road that goes from Chiba to Wakayama (1400 km). Seems like a good alternative to the route 1

Hi Ciaran, would you recommend cycle touring wearing cleats or ordinary sports shoes?

I just wore ordinary sports shoes, but some of my friends wore cleats. I guess it's just a matter of preference.

Hi without a car, is it possible to cycle from sendai to tokyo? Also, did you bring your own bike or we can just rent?

  • @CiaranRawlinson

Yes. It's possible to go anywhere in Japan without a car. I did my whole trip by bicycle and ferry. I cycled the section from Sendai to Tokyo but actually the road I took was quite busy. It's best to look for the small roads. Maybe you can search for some blogs from people who have found a good route.

Ty, i believe i can pull this journey someday since ive been there before my only concern is the accomodation along the way. Your other vids are awesome, you inspire others by living the life and travel is best with bicycle. Watched other cyclists too but yours are on point, summarized and watchable. Keep it up and tc.

Seriously considering a bike trip through Japan---not sure the route yet. I was in Tokyo visiting during that Typhoon in October, 2017. Any tips or exceptional routes I should consider?

I talk about my favourite routes on my video of tips for cycling in Japan. Hokkaido and the San-in Coast were my favourite parts. The Shimanami Kaido is also a great section.

@@CiaranRawlinson Gobbled up your content and I am left day dreaming, haha. Hokkaido is the region I want to explore next. I have done my share of the Kansai region, down to Miyajima & surrounding tourism centric cities. I'm eager to explore with the both the freedom and limitations of bike travel.

Good thing you don't wear glasses. Those rain storms would just spot up glasses real bad.

Yeah, not sure what people who wear glasses do when cycling in the rain I think I was lucky on this trip. Didn't have too many rainy days overall.
