January 2024 Net Worth & Income Update (coastFIRE living, upcoming travels & YouTube burnout)

One month of 2024 already gone, WOW. I've had some large expenses this past month & low income so we aren't getting this year off to a great start. I appreciate everyone out there who watches these videos and remembers way back when my channel was called Canadian FIRE Gal, then FI-Losophy before Brittany Morgan.
We've come a long way but my main focus is still living a coastFIRE lifestyle responsibly. Getting good with money is the ONLY reason I am able to live & travel the way I do right now and I'm so thankful to all the people out there sharing their financial journeys and tips because it's how I've learned everything I know.
I'm hoping to put more financial content out there soon! Leave me a comment down below about which financial topics you might be interested in. Cheers!

Sorry to hear you have been experiencing a ton of negativity here. I hope it doesn't deter you from making videos. Your videos are definitely going to encourage many people to take the same steps to coastFIRE!

Thank you for the support! It's discouraging but since I stepped back to 1 video a week and only look at comments here and there it's really helped. The positivity definitely outweighs the negativity on KZread which is awesome but sometimes though negative ones really sting and stick with you.

Your condo may be worth more than you think. My nephew is trying to buy a condo in Calgary, he keeps losing bidding wars. Selling for over asking is extremely common!

Wow!!! That is crazy, I knew detached homes were bidding wars in Calgary but not condos. Good to know if it keeps up and we decide to sell and move elsewhere. I really love our place though it needs some big renos!

To tell the truth I’ve never explored my net worth before. But thinking now with my house/ super scheme it does turn into a sizeable amount. There is never any cash in my bank account lol. I totally understand about your last segment of the video. I’ve had the same on my channel. 💯 must look after no:1 first. I have enjoyed your honest opinions on your vids. PS loved the videos of you and Donovan taste testing/ guessing the beers on his channel. Have a good one. OREWA here.

It's a worthwhile exercise to go through everything and find out your net worth! It can be boring and tedious but I really enjoy it and doing it monthly helps me keep checks on my progress throughout the year. Thank you so much, we really loved making the beer tasting videos!

Great analysis as always. You are correct you should only include the amount of the value of the property that you have already paid in your net worth. Happy & Safe Travels. Have a great time in Down Under....!!! On a side note BRIM should have you as an Brand ambassador and I got the card from your link too. They have an amazing customer service better than the regular Canadian Banks

Hi, just found your channel. I’m from Edmonton so I appreciate the Canadian content. I use my estimated property value I get from the city in my net worth statement. It just helps with the motivation. And this housing market has increased modestly compared to some places over the pandemic where there has almost been a doubling. I really like ‘the money guy’ content and they use the price they paid for their house like you do but they always say a net worth statement is your tool to help you track your wealth building. Anyways keep up the good work!

Also I just use the simple equation: assets - liabilities = net worth but I do keep an eye on what percentage of my networth is in my home vs investments. Because you don’t want to be in a situation where 90% of your networth is in your home.

As to your question regarding property equity. I normally only include the original purchase price in my net worth, but have adjusted it from time to time. Once when the mortgage was up for renewal and the bank re-appraised it as it was higher than the original purchase price, but lower then an offer I had received for the property. Another time was when I built a double garage on the property as that did increase the value of the property, so I thought it was warranted. Make sense?

  • @brittanymorgan09

Totally! My mortgage will renew in 2025 so maybe I will adjust at that stage once the bank appraises it. I haven't done any renos but would love to do some major ones in the next 5-10 years so I'll wait for that too. Thanks!

Hey Brittany, I’m so sorry to hear about your negative experiences on here, people are generally pretty angry (others, sadly can just simply be described as a*seholes but let’s not get into that! 😜) but wanted to say a heartfelt thank you from this homesick kiwi, your videos have made a huge difference and you’ve done some pretty awesome looking hikes!! OK on the house value thing, I personally only use the purchase price for these calculations plus capital additions - I do it this way as it’s only worth its value when I sell it (if that makes sense?) enough from me, sending you and Donovan best wishes, I hope you have a great time being tourists!!

Sorry to hear that you tube has been getting to you in a negative way. I do appreciate hearing it because it can be glamorized so much. I was just saying to someone how I've considered making a channel, but then I really just dont want to open the door to people who might be sinsiter and there might be some unfortunate outcome from that . I do really like your content. Do whatever you want to make this a way you that like - like less videos, or turning off comments. As for how to consider value of property in net worth - when I had to refinance due to break up I had to add to the price of the place because the value had gone up and I had to pay him out of his half of the equity. So, I have to put a nunber on it, but I do a conservative number. If I did have to sell it it'd have to pay the fees and a lot of tax (to pay out the investment part of it, its a duplex), plus the value it was recently feels inflated. I'm torn because I dont plan to sell any time ever, but also it's a large part of my assets.... So that's how I do it. I'd want to avoid putting a number on it than could ever actually be lower when I sell. Thats me

  • @brittanymorgan09

    @brittanymorgan09

Thanks for your perspective on the equity/NW topic! That's a bit of tricky situation when you have to pay someone else out if you purchased with another person. I'll probably just stick with purchase price for NW and lower it if the market crashes or something though I'd never sell it for less than I paid! I definitely like to be honest when it comes to making content online. Most videos get very positive reactions but the second something goes "viral" or gets a lot of views you get so many trolls. People who honestly don't think the creator will ever see their comment I think. Some people think content creators are not real people and don't work hard at all LOL. Something you don't really know until you do it yourself though. Similar to working in customer service I guess! It's a really fun creative outlet though and I'll keep going, just at a more manageable pace. Thanks for the support and kind words, it really does help!

  • @TheahLil

Happy to have helped! I agree, sticking with the purchase price keeps things very simple, clean, and you know you're very likely higher than what you wrote when you come up with the net worths. If I didn't have to do what I did I'd have kept it like that myself, but now my mortgage is higher than what we paid at the very beginning soooo.... :/ It was a very painful and hard time especially since it was RIGHT when the values were SO CRAZY high AND the interest rates were leaping every day. Ooof. I worked as fast and hard to negotiate through the heartbreak and get the interest rate I was able to get. Higher than we'd had, but lower than it has been in the 1.5 years since. Still stings quite a bit. Oh well, just can do the best I can ! @@brittanymorgan09
