JannPaul Education: Limitations of the HCA Tool

The HCA tool is a great tool to eliminate poorly cut diamonds.
When selecting a diamond, the Ideal Scope, ASET Scope and Hearts & Arrows scope must be used together to further eliminate non-performing diamonds that the HCA tool is not able to detect.
In this video, we will show you the limitations of HCA tool and why a low HCA score diamond does not guarantee a high performance diamond.

Using structured lighting to show videoed effects will always favour H&A's level symmetrical stones. GIA gave this stone Excellent, which means it is very good at least - their standards are too wide for these days - on that we agree. But in an average room where the lighting is random detecting the benefit of this level of symmetry is much harder. Read below as to the real reason this stone was a bad choice as a poor quality stone. BTW I am the H in HCA and manufacturer of aSET and Ideal-scopes

Garry Holloway What tool would you use to rate the fire of a Princess cut diamond?

A small point of order. The stone you chose as the 'bad' example is dull because it has light disturbing inclusions. The GIA cert lists the main grade makers as 1. Knot - there are two centrally placed. 2. clouds (which are also noted as 'not shown' on the plot). And finally 3 is the crystal which on the plot is VVS2 or VS1 - I would expect such a stone to be a little duller.

I read on your website that you are using DiamCalc to evaluate stones as one key factor. Is the program available freely on the market as I saw potential use of this program is huge. Could you give an approximate order how to check on a diamond´s quality? (Would you check in a different order for different cuts or colored diamonds? Just assuming bc different cuts tend to hide color hue or inclusions better than others, etc.) E.g. 1. Diamond grading report: cut quality: triple excellent, inclusions, etc. 2. Spread/DiamCalc, Diamond grading report: measures, 3.ASET/IdealScope/Hearts&Arrows, 4.HCA, etc...

Is the HCA tool only for round diamonds? What tools do you use for Princess diamonds?

Yes HCA is only for round brilliant diamonds, if you’re looking for a well performing princess cut I would look for princess cuts graded by AGS and look for diamonds with AGS 0 grade.
