Two tips that really helped me: I scanned and then printed color copies of the cutting diagrams and cut them apart and clipped them onto my stacks of cut diamonds to help me keep them organized and easy to pull the right ones for each row. Also, I used the little sandpaper dots for quilting rulers on the back of the plastic diamond template so that it doesn’t slip as I cut the diamonds. Hopefully my ideas help others! I’m really enjoying the piecing process, just going at it slow and peacefully, it’s so beautiful!

I was wanting to paper piece this. After watching you, I think machine piecing is the only way to go. I'll hand quilt it and that will be authentic enough. I never would have been able to construct this without your video. Thanks Cindy!

That’s beautiful. Looks like a lot of planning and marking, but a masterpiece is worth all the efforts you must put into it. I have been quilting and sewing for 60 years, but still don’t own a quilt. I love to see people’s faces when they learn I have given them a quilt, the joy on their face makes it all worth while, but I’m sure this one won’t leave my sight. Nearly a year after I started this adventure, my JA quilt is almost finished (just need to add the binding). A big thank you to Riley Blake for the video and template, plus the helpful comments in response to my questions last Feb. Can't say enough for the value of using light sizing to pre-treat quilting fabrics. Virtually eliminated fraying and stretching, plus made the fabrics easier to cut and sew. I now use it for all my quilting projects. My JA quilt was hand-quilted by a good friend (no problems with the use of sizing). She did detailed quilting on each of the flowers in the interior panel diamonds and outlined each of the small diamonds in the border. Simply stunning. A gift for my daughter. I'm going to use the same fabrics to make a quilt for myself.

Note that the instructions on the pattern say to mark the WRONG SIDE of the fabric.

I've made several simple quilts on my own, but since I've never sewn from a quilt pattern before I decided to sew a simpler quilt first and tackle this one next. The anticipation builds!

Can this be hand pieced instead of machine? Also, does the pattern specify what type of starch to use?

Is it weird that the fabric looks like the finished product then you cut it apart and sew it back together again?

I recently started English Paper Piecing my own "recreation" of the quilt, but I honestly come back to this video every couple weeks because the way this kit works is just so absolutely coconuts to me. I can't believe yours is the only comment that points this out.

Yes, it is funny! But I love it. I love that there's the option to just keep the whole thing together for a simple quilt or to cut it out and piece it together the advanced way. It would be difficult to find all those tiny diamonds' worth of fabrics individually, so I appreciate that they are available on the panels. This is such a fun project and I'm in love with the fabrics.

Before I began the actual large quilt from the kit, I purchased the front panel with the basket, about 1.5 yards navy dot sashing fabric for a border, and 1.5 yards of the "Anne" fabric for the backing. I made a small lap quilt. (It is a little larger than the basket panel because it includes the navy dot border. About 4 inches.) I quilted it together using in the ditch along the sashings on all sides of the diamond. This was great practice for me to get a feel for the fabric as I work on the actual pieced quilt. I like how the "Anne" fabric looks on the sample so I'm going to use that for the backing. This sample quilt helped me feel more comfortable with everything before I jumped in to the large quilt. I suggest buying the diamond panel and playing with it if you are apprehensive about tackling the large quilt. It makes you more confident and allows you a bit of creativity and it only took me about 3 days to complete the whole thing. And you can keep the basket panel in one piece! This video is a lifesaver. I thought it was a bit weird also. But some of those designs in the panel are not in the yardage fabric. Also, the big center medallion is not available in any other way. She says the panel was made for reproducing the quilt. Maybe some of the fabrics only had a few diamonds and they didn’t want to produce a bulk yardage from it. Also, there only a few diamonds were from that panel. There were hundreds more cut from yardage which is fabric on the bolt. These fabrics are designed to replicate all the fabrics from the original quilt. So it might just be a matter of volume. If there were x number of blocks in the original quilt then they made full yardage. If there were less than x diamonds, you grouped those together on the panel. None of those take away from the beauty of a beautiful replica quilt. I’m hoping to get mine done for my daughters birthday at the end of November.

How can I get the pattern pamphlet?

I have two questions about pre-starching/sizing the fabric for this quilt. 1) I understand that I should pre-starch/size the fabrics from which the diamonds will be cut and I'll be following the technique used by Gerri Robinson. Should I also pre-starch/size the boarder panels so that everything has even shrinkage? What about the backing material? 2) A friend will be hand quilting this piece for me. Are you aware of any issues with using pre-starch/sizing and hand quilting, e.g., difficulty in moving a quilting needle through the fabric?

Hi Helen - I talked with several RBD people who have made the quilt and they only starched the fabrics for the quilt center, not the borders and backing. Hope this helps.

You actually need to ask your friend (the person doing the hand quilting) his/her preference and her own sensitivities to starch and sizing products. Starch is generally not an impediment for hand quilting as a process but may be for the sensitivity of the individual quilter’s hands.

I don’t blame you, you’d be setting yourself up for failure. As pretty as it is I’d go for squares and lines not cut on the bias. Good luck with the pillow case

@@katywuste9054 the diamonds are pretty simple to cut and stitch. My first quilt I ever did was all on bias. It was pretty simple. The layout of this quilt and pillow ends up being pretty symmetrical. Just take it one row at a time. Don’t be intimidated by the diamonds. And you’ll be pretty proud of yourself when you’re done :)

It looks like the navy dots on the sashing is very straight. My fabric is straight on the first 18 inches, but then goes crooked. Any suggestions for cutting the 1 1/2” sashing to get them straight?

What is the sewing foot she’s using?

I have just put a 2inch spot border then wider Elizabeth then 2inch spot again to join the central panel with the borders. Looks lovely. My backing is pieced from all the fabrics.

@@jand3793 So you just added borders to the panel? That’s what I’d like to do. How wide was your Elizabeth border? Then did you add the tiny diamond border panels outside of that? Did things line up properly?

@@susanmei9980 the diamonds borders are quite big so I did adapt them to my borders - think I did five inch and 2.5 inch borders before putting the diamonds on.

I’ve been researching and I see that they have arranged the colors in the diamond borders so that they will line up perfectly with the top and bottom borders IF you piece them together as specified. Otherwise, the colors won’t match and I’d have to do some fancy maneuvering to make it look ok. 😬 Which I can do, but not sure I want to mess around. I find it amazing that they went to all the trouble to print a small panel, and then ask you to cut it up and piece it back together again! And then cut out more pieces and add them. It seems like it should be one or the other and since they can print wide backing, why did they not just print the entire panel in one piece? And then make three template sizes for the ppl who want to make it from scratch? I mean, I think it would be fun to make it from scratch, but take so much time. But cutting up a panel seems dumb. Anyway, I don’t need it as big as the original, so that’s why I’d like to do like you and ad lib. Thanks for your input! 🤗🌷

The background color of my dot fabric is a different color from the boarder panel. Has anyone else come across this? Is it noticeable on the finished project? I waited for 3 months for this kit to come in and I didn't even get my keepsake box. Now the fabric doesn't match, I am very disappointed.

Hi Joanna - Here's a reply from the RBD Design Director: There are slight differences in the background of the polka dot yardage and the digitally printed background of the same print on the panel, but it is not noticeable on the finished project. All of the RBD Jane Austen coverlet quilt kits come in a keepsake box; however, a shop could have created their own kits and packaged them differently. Hope this helps.

You have to cut it up because the sashing on the panel is a different width. Of course if you are not making the quilt you could just use the panel on its own.

Pro or con to use a walking foot?

I don’t use a walking foot for piecing. But for quilting and attaching the binding, or sewing thick fabrics or bulky layers, it keeps the fabrics from bunching. It’s also called an even feed foot because the foot has “feet” that grab the fabric from the top as the machine grabs from the bottom and evenly walks the fabric through the machine so you won’t feel the need to “help” by kinda pushing the fabric as you sew. An even feed or walking foot also is good when you’re using fabrics that stretch, so if sewing on the bias, it might help by keeping the fabrics from stretching or distorting when piecing triangles or diamonds on the machine.

I would use a walking foot since these are pretty much all bias cut.

I just bought all the fabrics. Including a fat quarter bundle (wish they did a 1/2 yd bundle to save cost-wise) and the diamond panel plus the border panel. The place I purchased my fabrics from said that sense the fabrics are so hard to find all of (and they are) many people are just using the diamond and medallion panel and the border panel to put together and while it’s smaller than the pattern, you can most definitely just use the 2 panels to make a quilt. I personally am not using the writings as the backing. And I might be using one of the blues as a binding. But since I want to keep it more traditional, I’m just using a muslin wide backing fabric for the backing.

I bought the fabric myself but I realise as someone newish you quilting this is a bit beyond my skill level. I’ll be doing squares with sashing but at least it will be unique.

It actually looks more intimidating than it is. I believe this is a 60 degree diamond template, but you can get both a 45 degree and 60 degree diamond template and put it against the diamonds in the panel to know. By using the template, the cutting will be very easy. And then sewing, instead of just the small marks, draw yourself a 1/4 in line from dot to dot so you stay on the bias. My very first ever big quilt was a quilt all sewn on the bias. You will do just fine with this. Take it slow and it would be beautiful

I know this is 3 months after you commented but wanted to say this: try doing the diamonds and sashing using inexpensive cotton fabric to get the feel of it. You may decide you can do the diamonds after all.
