Jamie Winship on Why Separation Creates Suffering and The Necessity of Self-Emptying

It's week four of [Formed.], and one of our favorite people is back on the podcast: Jamie Winship. This week, Jamie talks to us about why separation creates suffering, the necessary practice of self-emptying according to Jesus's teaching in Matthew 5, how to develop a right view of God, and a brilliant concept called "closed-handed anxiety." As usual, it's a fascinating conversation, so prepare for some note-taking. And of course, if you missed the first three weeks of [Formed.], go back and catch those episodes on your podcast feed or KZread.

I will never leave you nor forsake you. You are One Spirit with God not two, be strong and courageous abide in my Love. In contemplation we lie in stillness and surrender to nothing, to whatever He wants to bring. Relational love compelled church compared to the purpose driven church. Im a high willed, thinker and feeler person but abiding is so much better as its His life. I have only just started listening to jamie but so much connection. the body is awakening more and more to Union Love. All of us are.

Wow. I have been praying “Lord, I empty myself completely before You” over the past year, often in desperation for His peace and presence. Praying this way seems to give me a clean slate to begin the day and helps counteract the lies of the enemy. Thank you for this! ❤

One of the best outlines of process I have heard from Jamie. I’ve reviewed dozens of his videos and must admit I tend towards being a “fan boy groupie” So helpful.

Love that point about looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter. I hear so many voices, sermons, christians, myself included in the past playing into the idea that we have to drum up this mountain of faith to achieve or "buy" the promises of God. But that's so false, we are not orphans on our own trying to muster up our faith. We are looking to the faithful one, the alpha and omega, feeding on His faithfulness. He begins our journey and completes it in His strength for His glory. Praise God!

This came out literally 5 minutes ago, and I already know it's incredible. Everything Jamie has said or written so far has been so on-point and transformative in my life, that I get excited whenever you guys put something new out there. Self-emptying is just like breathing -- if you close yourself up, you will suffocate. If you don't breathe out the old air, it will literally poison your blood and kill your heart. But if you breathe out the old, and breathe in the New, it literally cleans your blood and brings Life to every cell in your body. Not only that -- but some forms of self-emptying are like CPR to other people -- when we share our Life, it can breathe life into someone who was dying. So, yeah -- self-emptying and receiving the Christ-life isn't just for our blessing, but gives Life to everyone around us. My experience anyway...

This one blessed me.🥰 Recently I have had a lot of anxiety. It seemed to come on suddenly and with a vengeance (not something that has been an issue before). As I pray on it, He is quiet. I feel that as I listened to this He showed me a few things. 1. Focus. If I focus on what I don't have, that's all I will see. But if I choose to live with open hands, that He will provide. 2. What makes me sad? What thing has He put on my heart that He wants me to partner with Him in? As soon as you guys talked about that something came to mind.😅 It confirmed some things that have happened recently that made no sense to me. 3. Hope. Choosing to be hopeful is a choice. I can choose to believe that good things will happen. I struggle with negative thoughts and overthinking so this is a good challenge for me.💪 4. What gifts has He put in me that I can use to bless others? Recently I have been growing in the prophetic. My tendancy is to let others speak before I do. There was a situation recently where I felt Him say something to me that He wanted me to share but I didn't because it felt "out of context". And as I was praying and thinking on it last night I felt Him ask me why I chose not to say anything. Lol, I feel like Gideon. Given a task, but asking God, "Was that really from you?" 5. Rest. With the anxiety I have been feeling exhausted and have been resting more. It can feel frustrating when my body wants to rest and my mind is racing. And yet I feel that there's something that my body knows that my mind doesn't. Rest is good for the mind and body. Thanks for sharing this.❤️

My question is, what about abusive situations? For example, a Christian wife trying to "lay down her life" for peace in the marriage, for years, yet her Christian husband continues to unrepentantly, and he claims unknowningly, manipulate/ control (self-protect)? Does she just "keep pursuing peace" when it is a sham "Christian marriage "? Is it more like Jesus to expose the darkness/ lies so the people in and affected by the marriage can be set free than to "keep the peace"?

Becoming a peacemaker isn’t to be conflated with glossing over abuse, manipulation, and dysfunction. Where there is abuse, seek a covering of guidance, counsel, wisdom, protection…and then get out!

There is a difference between peacemaker and a peacekeeper. Great advice, ♥️💔❤ I was given advice that helped me clarify that our spouse or family member HAS A SAVIOR. If anyone is instructed to lay their life down, it is a man of God..

I was in an extremely abusive marriage. The Lord delivered me once and I went back. The second time God delivered me He said DON'T LET HIM BACK IN! He told me that he paid a high price for my freedom and I needed to guard my freedom with the same vengeance with which he purchased it. You could also say it is for freedom he set us free. If you are in bondage that is not the Lord's plan. He also told me that marriage was made for man, not man for marriage.

Instead of wanting what you can receive from God in 2023, how about asking the question how can I please and serve you better for your plans and your purposes. Make it all about him and not about yourself it’s a totally different mindset to want to serve the Lord versus receipt from the Lord. And in that serving him with all your heart the all knowing and always will give us what we don’t know we need in 2023. That’s his business, not ours. Just a different way to frame it altogether.

“I didn’t come to be served by you, but to serve you and to give my life as a ransom for you.” “If you don’t let me wash your feet you have no part in me.” Yes, we want to serve God, but how, apart from receiving His Love, could we possibly give love away. How, if we haven’t received His daily Life into ourselves, could we possible give anything hit death away.
