They tried making a comeback with Princess and the Frog in 2010, but it wasn't that much of a success. The Alice in Wonderland live action from the same year on the other hand...
I love hearing James talk about his favourite movies, you can tell there's such genuine appreciation and love for the films there
You could argue that in The Sleeping Beauty, the Prince and the Princess are just supporting characters, while the actual main characters are the fairies. That's ultimately what the movie is about, isn't it - the power struggle between the fae and how they use the humankind as pawns. I loved getting this new perspective on the story and the film when I read about it once.
@savageredbeard

I wouldn't disagree with that. They actually take up a large portion of the story and have a deep backstory.

Oddly I always felt there was a clear antagonist, but there was not so much a main character as you watch the world unfold. Each piece has there part to play that just so happens to coallese into this wonderful experience. Or I mean we could just Maleficent got gang banged up upon by a whole kingdom at once.

The Great Mouse Detective is easily my favorite, it's that kind of movie that I can watch forever. And while it isn't in my top 5, the original Rescuers holds a special place in my heart. It's such an offbeat movie that I feel you either get it or you don't. And if you do get it, then it's a perfectly charming movie you can vibe to, but it also has a more cohesive story structure that isn't as meandering as so many early Disney films. And the main leads are just so charming that I could watch them do anything together.

The Sword in the Stone was my favorite growing up and looking back, it's still my favorite. The donkey-morph scene in Pinnochio freaked me out as a kid (and as an adult), for the same reasons you said. The desperation and if memory serves, he calls for his mama just before his vocals turn into the hee-haws of a donkey. It was a horror scene in the middle of a fantasy movie. A lot of great sequences in that movie, and relatively faithful to the book. My favorite was the magic contest between Merlin and Madam Mim.
The thing that always stuck with me about Sword in the Stone is when they recycle the sound clip of Arthur going "whoah-what-WHOAH!" and the way the wolf gasps for breath when he has to keep going back up and down to chase them. 🤣

Sleeping Beauty definitely took inspiration from the old medieval manuscripts and book artworks of the 900's-1400's. Also, I remember a "making of" this movie years ago and they said the production pushed a couple of animators close to the nut house by the end because it was so labor intense.

Great selection James. I don't think there were many I really even disliked but there are the ones that stand out more than others like 101 Dalmatians or the Rescuers. Even ones with a stylized look and characters like Hercules or The Great Mouse Detective. I honestly don't know if I could pick 5 but Im sure most would certainly be in the pre 90's era like your list.

Alice In Wonderland is a masterpiece. Sleeping Beauty has the best animation on the whole, but Alice's character animation has so many layers of polish that I haven't seen in anything else in animation. My favourite Disney film is Lilo & Stitch, with Aladdin and The Rescuers duology close behind.
