Met James Taylor on a fishing boat in the Keys around 20 years ago. We both had rain checks cuz of bad weather and when it was clear we had been double booked, he just said it was fine if I wanted to come along and we fished all day. Kinda quiet and marked by a hard life for sure. But we caught a lotta fish and parted ways. A few years later I found my Karolina and she is my wife and companion since 20 years. Ahhh for the paths we walk…

The High Country around Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway.. heaven on earth!😢
You can substitute any city, town, state, country for Carolina, a song missing home and reminiscing about good times and memories.
“Karen she’s a silver sun, you’d best walk her way and watch it shining. Watch her watch the morning come.” Beautiful and sublime.
I've seen him 3 times in concert. I have never experienced another performer who could directly connect with me as he did. In a 13 k seat basketball coliseum, I felt like we were on the porch and he was singing directly to me. On of the best musical experiences I've ever had.
No matter where I travel, Carolina is always on my mind. Always good to come home 🫡
It was on a flight that connected through Charlotte that I saw North Carolina for the first time. I hadn't ever even thought about the place as a life long resident of the Western US, but there was something about all the greenery surrounding Lake Norman as the plane made its final approach that seemed oddly compelling. It wasn't until several years later when my brother got married in Georgia that I actually got to visit North Carolina for more than an airport layover, and it seemed to confirm what I had felt about the place the first time around. A few years further down the road, my wife and I were beginning to realize that we were becoming increasingly dissatisfied with where we were living, and there was basically nothing tying us to the area anymore (I used to have family there but they all moved away, and my job was now remote.) That seed came back, and even though neither of us had been there more than once or twice, it seemed like it might just be the place for us. A few months later. I just found out that we had an offer accepted on a house near Greensboro. I've never actually lived there, but maybe Carolina has been in my mind anyway.
To me, Carolina is a metaphor for heaven, and he’s saying when he passes away he’ll be home. Don’t be sad for he’s back in Carolina. “Say nice things about me when I’m gone.”
James’s voice is just so gentle, calming, and kind…truly a remarkable talent ❤️

This used to be my mom and one of her very best friend’s favorite songs. & in her 20’s her friend was diagnosed with M.S and then cancer that in combination became fatal rather quickly. To her last days she still loved to sing this song and it brings me comfort to know my mother has such a gentle and comforting song to help her remember her sweet friend.
I was named after this man, maybe coincidentally. His melancholy and undying loveliness speaks deeply to my soul. God bless James Taylor. This song feels like it's for me. I hope that anyone else gets to feel that.

This is the first time hearing this song in about a year, I just had goosebumps all down my neck when I heard his voice.
One of JT's best songs.
Anybody remember the early 70s when James Taylor was on the cover of Newsweek and the magazine declared that Rock was dead and the future was Folk? In case you hadn't noticed, it didn't happen that way. Thank goodness there was ample room for both and in combination.
North Carolina was where I used to threaten to escape to when life got too difficult. I go there for work quite frequently, now. I love it up there.
I always thought it was "can't you just taste the moonshine". Happy Birthday today(March 12) to James Taylor. Cheers!
It occurred to me just now that I don't know this song well enough to sing it by heart. Which is a shame, because I need to add it to my rotation of songs I sing in the filing room at work every Friday when I'm filing the check stubs after the payment run. Fire and Rain's already on that list, along with Jet Airliner (Steve Miller Band), Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen), I Got A Name (Jim Croce), and because I have an ironic sense of humor, Mr. Tanner (Harry Chapin.) I am eternally grateful to my mom and grandma, who always encouraged me to sing out loud regardless of who might be listening...and for raising me on such singable and joyful songs. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to listen to this one oh, about 15,000 more times and practice it in the shower :)

What a great story. That was a very special encounter.
Much better than the original overproduced 1968 version. This version has a much simpler arrangement. The session personnel who accompany James Taylor on vocals and acoustic guitar include Dan Dugmore (steel guitar), Byron Berline (fiddle), Leland Sklar (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums), Clarence McDonald (piano), and Andrew Gold (pump organ, harmony vocals). Also, who could give this a dislike?

@@timepoet77 Carly Simon must've been an uncredited appearance on this song, as the liner notes of Taylor's "Greatest Hits" album don't seem to mention her as having provided backing vocals on this track - she is credited, however, with the backing vocals on "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" and "Shower the People". As for this song, the credits listed in the album's liner notes are James Taylor on vocals and acoustic guitar, Dan Dugmore on steel guitar, Leland "Lee" Sklar on bass, Byron Berline on fiddle, Russ Kunkel on drums, Clarence McDonald on piano, and Andrew Gold on the harmonium (which, according to such websites as Wikipedia, is another name for an instrument more commonly known as the "reed organ") and the backing vocals here are attributed to the aforementioned Andrew Gold.

@@brunoghe That's on the original version from 1968, which was released on Apple Records. This version is a different recording, the Wikipedia article for the song says that Taylor re-recorded this song in 1976 (and was released on Warner Brothers Records) because he had duffulty obtaining the rights from Apple Records, and the lineup on this version consists of James Taylor (lead and backing vocals, acoustic guitar), Dan Dugmore (pedal steel guitar), Lee Sklar (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums), and Andrew Gold (harmonium [although Wikipedia doesn't explicitly say this, "harmonium" is another name for a reed organ] and backing vocals).

“Carolina In My Mind” (1968) finds James Taylor longing to return to North Carolina, his childhood home. Dixit Taylor : “[It’s about] that feeling of being called away to another place.” His debut album titled “James Taylor” (1968) was audiotaped in London - at the same time The Beatles were cutting their “White Album” (1968) - and was released on the Fab Four Apple label. In the line, “With a holy host of others standin’ around me,” THE “HOLY HOST OF OTHERS” IS THE BEATLES‼️ PAUL MCCARTNEY played bass and sang harmonies on this. And GEORGE HARRISON provided backing vocals, but he was uncredited on the LP. In 1976, Taylor recorded a new version of “Carolina In My Mind” for his “Greatest Hits” album. This second version is longer, running for 3:57, whereas the original one clocks in at 3:36. ONE MAJOR FOLK STANDARD❕ 💙🍏💜
