Ep 3: James Pumphrey | Car Stories with Sung Kang and Emelia Hartford
Sung and Emelia sit down with the side of James the cameras don't get to see; introspective and mellow, but unsurprisingly just as funny. James shares how his roots in comedy and his passion for cars serendipitously converged in his current role as Editor in Chief of Donut Media. They also talk about their shared experience of a parent absence and the impact is had on their individual perspectives.

Once when I was a teenager, around 16, I was walking down the street in Manhattan and I look up to my left and Sung is walking RIGHT past me, but as I’m staring he notices me and gives me his attention, I said i loved his movies especially his part in Fast & Furious. He was genuinely so kind and calm, also he’s tall af. I’ll remember it forever, it was like meeting Batman.

Sung is super cool, he’s literally Han in real life. I got the chance to get a photo with him while he was in my neighborhood one time and he’s exactly who childhood me hoped he would be. Despite what he says about himself in this podcast, I was stoked with my interaction. He never portrayed himself as a happy go lucky dude and I’m sure nobody wants to be approached by random people at random times so I didn’t take anything personally and was just thankful for the opportunity!

I actually stumbled onto donut by accident, and James and Nolan sparked my love for cars again. I was looking for info on VW Corrados a few years back and the old manuals and advertisements were so boring so I looked to see if anyone reviewed one on KZread, and up to speed on the scirocco popped up. I immediately fell in love binged all available up to speed, bumper 2 bumper and all other available content then watched everything upon release. I’m so glad James listened to the community and stopped the KZread charge to go back to their roots. It’s going great.

This made me smile a lot, i grew up on the big 3 F&F movies. Tokyo drift being my favorite and molding my interest and love for all things automotive. Honestly we are all lucky to all share the love for the same thing. Its a culture thats slowly fading away with time, and im glad ive seen and met a lot of cool people with some really cool cars. It makes me happy that one common interest can bring people together. I also love donut, i started watching as a teenager, they do really well of mixing media and educational content. Though yes, there are a lot of channels that go a lot more in depth about cars, donut just holds a special place in your heart. Its just fun and you can always learn from them on top of the fun you're having watching them.

As far as the haters go there will always be haters, it’s so easy for people be behind the computer and hate. It’s a personality issue, I had a brother in law that had to speak down towards others.
