The greatest trick the Tories have is taking something despicable and just ignoring it until it is normalised. Try being a single income family with anything but subsistence living, try being a home owner in your 20s without some generous deposit being gifted to you by parents. It used to be normal, fair, for pay to keep up with inflation but if you are not in the 1% then you are actually greedy or a 'militant' trade unionist to want such things. Yet at the same time coroporate profits are at all time highs (I am focused on large businesses not small companies) and the government congratulate them on their greed. The last 40 years have been dominated by normalising these things that food banks being used by hundreds of thousands of people (and actually been referred to them by the DWP) is just another thing we have to get used to.

I’m haunted by the fact that rents in London have risen 20% and landlords can use section 21 to threaten tenants (with no history of late payments) with eviction at two months notice if they don’t pay up. This government has allowed criminals to launder their money on the London housing market, reduce available housing stock and drive house prices and rents Sky high even as the economy is tanking, inflation soars and access to mortgages for first time buyers is impossible.
I'm an American, so I deeply feel for the chaos you guys are going through. It looks insane to the rest of the world. I expect much in the same way the world looked at us with Trump in power. That said, this is why I listen to JOB because he can speak to humanity in you, wherever you are. That bit he said about school lunches and being in- between qualification and still hungry - that was my experience growing up. And he's right, there's a shame to it. I never sat in the cafeteria during lunchtime with all the other kids because I didn't want to smell the food and I didn't want to see everyone else eating. That sort of thing really sticks with a person as they get older in a myriad of ways. It's probably why I became a chef because I wanted a way to control how I ate and what I ate. It's probably why if anyone tells me they are hungry, I will stop everything to help ensure they get provisions, even if it turns out that they were lying and used that weakness to prey on my kindness and empathy. It's just sad that 40 years later, we are still allowing these triggers and traumatic experiences to happen to young children in the "developed world".

Brexit was a catalyst; this had been brewing here pretty much in parallel with events in the US. Brexit didn't happen in a vacuum any more than Trump did. A lot of people enjoy your monologues or "rants" because they share your anger, fear and dismay at the current government but don't have the words to express it as clearly as you do, James. It's our jumbled up messy thoughts, confused by the sheer shambolics we are seeing daily laid out in front of us in a succinct, passionate 10 minute "rant".
