James O'Brien and LBC callers debate votes for 16 year olds

Same here. The idea that young people are too irresponsible to be allowed to vote when the absolute nonsense of Brexit was (generally) more supported by the older generation is outrageous. The fact some people are acting like 16 year old's wont be in touch with politics, when the most disastrous thing this country has done in decades was voted in by our elders is disgraceful.

When I was 16 in 1995, I didn't care about politics in any way and just wanted to party, but I do appreciate that the world has changed in the last 28 years and that kids tend to be more responsible and informed these days. Tory gerrymandering in the form of demanding photo ID at polling stations is clearly a tactic of a party running scared of younger and less affluent people who absolutely aren't going to vote for them.

Its hard enough for many adults to gain an impartial mindset, dont think its unrealistic to suggest that 16 year olds would absolutely lack that mindset to make votes logical rather than emotional. The fact that james cant see this or it simply not being in his financial interests to flag this basic logic already speaks volumes about his general motive and lack of objectivity. Wouldn't be the first time hes done this, every form of news has done this afterall. Its a tragic money making ploy to push people on a trajectory without adding context to a situation. None of this gets made light of, which is the main issue we face rather than these half baked opinions getting subtely pushed onto people if you dont listen with caution. I dont agree with a lot of things that policital parties do, but this really isnt hard to grasp that its probably not a wise legislation to implement. Recently MPs have been debating whether or not the voting age, currently at 18, should be reduced to 16. Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Williams, has brought up the debate, stating that it would enable 1.5 million 16 and 17-year-olds to vote. The Labour party and the Liberal Democrats are in favour of lowering the voting age, but the Conservatives are opposed. However, quite surprisingly, many students believe that the voting age should be kept at 18. In a poll on The Student Room Website: 79% said that the voting age should stay at 18. Only 21% said that the voting age should be lowered to 16.

That's from a 2016 blog post on their site about a 2013 poll. What relevance does that have? So, nowadays I see The Student Room claims "75% of UK students aged 14-24 visit us" but I'm seeing archived posts from 2013 that say "where *thousands* of students help..." So, they were obviously had a more limited audience share of students back then. You can't even see how many people voted in that 2013 poll [at least not without an account.] Ok so I just went through all the pages of comments. There are 233 total comments on that poll thread. Throughout the entire thread there are 10 comments on the whole thing that received even just 5 likes, there are only 5 that are have a double digit number of likes with the highest one being 28. So, I'm betting that there were just a few hundred voters total on that poll from 10 years ago. I'm betting that it not only wasn't in anyway representative of 14 to 24 year olds back then & it certainly isn't representative of their views now.

Meanwhile, many of the older generations had their blinkers firmly on "I'm voting against as I made up my mind 50 years ago".
