It's an Eb7, as someone below me mentioned, which is borrowed from a different key because Eb is not in the key of A, the key that this song is in.

@@HyenaFox The song is in E. Each phrase in the verse just starts and ends on the 4, which is A. James plays the song in C, and the chord in question is a F#7 with a b13 - which he substituted for the 6 minor. So if he'd have sung it in it's original key it would be an A#b13

This could also be referenced as a "line cliche", where you drop (or ascend) by half steps to the resolving chord. That's the way I hear it at least.

A line cliche is when one notes moves against a stagnant chord, also sometimes called c.e.s.h. (chromatic embellishment of static harmony). He's voice leading through the chords (more than one note is changing), very similar to the original piano part - just using more color / getting outside of the triads for the I,IV,V,vi,ii chords. I liked the part at 3:01 where he seemed to crank the "esss" sound from his voice and pan it right. Maybe that's just the way the mics picked it up... sounded cool.

There are very few voices like his, nevermind the incredibly tasteful accompaniment, just amazing.
