John Wayne didn't want to appear in a weekly TV series- but he had Jim under contract, and suggested HE play "Marshal Matt Dillon". Arness also learned business "savvy" as well- by the early '60s, he was co-producer {and part owner} of "GUNSMOKE".

On season 1 episode 2 John Wayne welcomes James to GunSmoke as the intro.. John Wayne says he wishes he was in GunSmoke.then John goes to say he knew of only one man to play role.2-12-21

Loved this guy and his role at "Matt". But I wonder why I never saw him play anything with his brother, or why I never heard either brother even mention, the other. Maybe it really was the fact, that in those days, privacy really was just that.

Graves used to do "Biography" and I can't recall if the show ever featured, his brother. And if it did, if he then mentioned, that Arness was his brother. Another fun fact, Arness' son was a champion surfer, saw a nice shot of the two as I recall, down at Huntington Beach
