James Acaster talks about 2016 being the best year ever for music.

Ойын-сауық

Joining us at Audible Studios is English comedian and author James Acaster.
James talks about 2016 being the best year for music, his iPod guy and the infinite loop of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
The brand-new memoir from James Acaster: cult comedian, best-selling author of Classic Scrapes, undercover cop, receiver of cabbages.
Perfect Sound Whatever is a love letter to the healing power of music and how one man's obsessive quest saw him defeat the bullshit of one year with the beauty of another. Because that one man is James Acaster, it also includes tales of befouling himself in a Los Angeles steakhouse, stealing a cookie from Clint Eastwood and giving drunk, unsolicited pep talks to urinating strangers.

When Covid lock down started for something to do I listened to the top 500 singles of 1964 (according to Rate Your Music). I enjoyed the experience so much I decided to do the same thing for every year from 1960 to 2019, 6 decades of music and 30,000 singles. I'm currently just about to start 2016. I have to say though I disagree that modern music is anywhere near the quality of the past. I score every song out of 5 and shortlist all the songs from each year that score 4 or 5. The average across the decades is about 150 shortlisted songs from each years 500. Since 2006 no year has had more than 100 songs shortlisted from 500 and some are down in the 60s (2014 only had 67 shortlisted songs, compare with 1992 that had 204!). There is still good music out there post 2000, some very good, but there just isn't the same quantity of quality that there was in the past.
