Jambu Dwip | an expedition by Forest Department WB
Jambudwip is an isolated island in the Bay of Bengal, about 8 Kilometers to the south east of Sagar Island and almost same distance to the south west of Frazergonj, in the South 24 -Parganas District of West Bengal. Transient fishing community has been using a small part of this island from October to February every year since 1955 for fish drying as a traditional livelihood activity. The island was uninhabited and these fishermen always go back to their natal villages - mostly in the same district - at the end of the fish-drying season. Forest Department collected revenues, fees etc. and issued permits every year till 1998. Thus these fishermen have been enjoying an uninterrupted customary right on the island.
In August - September 2002 the forest department burned down the fishing implements that the transient fishers left in the island in huts - at the end of the fishing season (2001 -2002) - and debarred the fishermen from entering into the island in October 2002. According to the Forest Department this “eviction” has been done in compliance with the Supreme Court verdict of 1996 to remove all encroachments from reserved forest.

বেশ কয়েক বছর আগে আমি ও সাগর সেচবিভাগের বড়বাবু শ্যামল ভট্টাচার্য মহাশয় জম্মুদ্বীপে গিয়েছিলাম । তখন ওখানে মানুষজন বসবাস করতো ।একটা দিন কাটিয়ে ছিলাম । খুব আনন্দ পেয়েছিলাম । সেই স্মৃতি মনেপড়ে গেল । বনের ভেতরের ছবিগুলো পেলে বড় ভাল লাগত । সেই আশায় থাকলাম ।

You can visit, explore from Bok Khali , has plenty affordable accommodation, Frazerganj Ferry Ghat you can reach along shoreline, an hour max. Due permission from Forest Department will ease travel. All spots around Bok Khali, you can cover by walking or Public buses except Jumbo Dwip. Mousani Island also, you can engage motor vans Autos

Stay not allowed. Even for landing, you need to have prior permission from DFO. Boat fare is not so high.

Boats do run during daylight time, so after 3 PM, not good to start from Frazerganj jetty. High/ low tides also to be factored

At Bok khali, plenty of hotels, Govt Guest houses. Bok Khali is just 6 Km away from Jetty at Frazerganj as this team sat out for Jumbo Dwip ( formerly New Moor Island ) in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, about 140 KM away from Calcutta / Kolkata on NH 117

Yes, you can visit, al International tourists with valid visa & FRRO registration. Good accommodation at Bok Khali, budget hotels, WB Govt Tourism Department or WB Forest Department may be preferred & pre booked from Kolkata / Calcutta.

Based at Bok Khali, you may visit most of spots by walk , strolls, except Jumbo Dwip/ Island ( formerly New Moor Island ) & Mousini Island, located in India, West Bengal South 24 Parganas District.

In fact, entire Sundarbans ( UNESCO World Heritage site, Natural site, ) has plenty to offer, apart from Mangroves, flora & fauna. Avoid Mansoon time. Winters are best.
