Just to get to Westminster means it's a pretty perfect dog. Either that or your handler can correct the flaws Jamba really walks into a great stack I also preferred his face and expression more than the dog who won. I always say the just to get to Westminster means the dog meets the breed standard perfect and it mostly comes down to judge's choice. Good boy Jamba 😀

Wow, Jamba looks so awesome! His coat just shines! I’ve tried various shampoos on my own dog and his white isn’t quite so bright anymore and his black is much lighter than it used to be. But still as happy and healthy as can be. He’s 9 years old and maybe his fur changed because of age as well.

Jamba looked amazing! What an honour he got asked to show there! I am new in the showing world and was wondering if you could tell me if you bought that dog stroller with the board on top or you somehow made that? I want to have something like that for when I show my Cavaliers. As of right now, I just walk them in on a leash and have nowhere to keep them/groom them! Thanks!

The cart is called a Wonder Wheeler, and a small crate fits perfectly on the bottom. It was originally sold as a beach cart, but I bought mine from a woman who custom makes the grooming top to fit. My daughter also has one, but she built the top board herself.

It's a perennial problem for judges at big shows and at specialties. It comes down to very fine points, so you want a judge who is intimately familiar with the Breed Standard.

I think I am ready to enter my first AKC shows and hope I do not run into Romeo, or Jamba for that matter, hahaha! But, then again, I have class dogs, so if I can get some points at that level I will be happy. And if I get dumped a few shows in a row, well, then I will know to retire my show lead and try something else, like car racing, tennis or whatever. Given the situation, I think you did a good job, Jamba. You wagged your tail for the judge very nicely. Good tail carriage too. You showed a sparkly personality. I would have done a better grooming job on you, but it probably would not have made any difference given who you were up against. By the way Jamba, I love the way you and your cohorts narrate some of the videos. Did you know in advance who your competition would be when you entered the Westminster show? Given Romeo's record going in, how much sway do you think reputation had in the judges decision? Do you think the outcome was a foregone conclusion? I wonder what breeds that judge had experience with. How closely do you scrutinise a judges bio before choosing to enter a show? Is it fair to say a breed expert judge is more likely to pick what they like rather than put up a dog/handler team based on reputation? I took a show handling course taught by a licensed judge. Honestly, he knew nothing about Cavaliers, yet was judging the toy group. I worry about entering shows with judges like that. My take is that no-nothing judges will take the safe route and put up a pro handler ten times out of ten, worthy or not, but how do you know who knows what? I bet the guy I took the handling class with would hand me breed and a group placement for sure. But I am small potatoes. Pro handlers and other judges have connections on an industrial scale. This brings me to another question: Even if a judge is a breed expert, how do you find someone who will put bias aside and pick the best dog, even if their buddy or pro handler gives them the evil eye? Feel free to privately share your black and white lists with me. 😊 Not to say I have the best dogs. I am starting a bit late with my one dog. He's 11 1/2 years old. I am not holding my breath he'll do anything in the show ring. But he does have all his teeth still and looks good for his age. The other guy is 2 1/2, so he's got a better chance (or so I think, probably incorrectly). So, assuming I enter my old timer in veterans (at a Cavalier or toy specialty show), and he wins his class, i.e. veteran dog, he's ineligible for select dog, right? Since a lot of veterans are probably specials how would a judge know, or would the ring steward give him a heads-up on that? I have seen dogs awarded select bitch, much to the consternation of the ring steward. But then again, someone told me their bitch in season was disqualified at a show once for only having one testicle. Circling back to veterans, a judge told me once that they get no extra points, or consideration, for age. A few grey hairs may be forgiven but the dog has to compete head-to-head with their younger peers in every way. As a judge, what is your position on this? I remember you said in one of your videos that you see more Blenheims in the ring because the double recessive gene results in larger gene pool, therefore they are generally better. Do judges see it that way too? Are Tri's, Rubies, and B+Ts assumed to be inferior? I personally think you see more Blenheims because people like them better. Breeders are just responding to market demand. Tri's would be popular too but nicely marked ones are hard to find. It would be super easy to breed whole color dominant or B+T dominant Cavaliers wouldn't it? I find B+Ts to be an acquired taste--they are generally not anyone's go-to Cavalier, not mine anyway. If you have ever owned a Ruby, or B+T, people will ask you what it is. With a Blenheim, "Oh it's Elizabeth Taylor!!!" Looking forward to meeting you and your K9s at a show one day...

Lots to discuss here, but let me do my best to address your questions. General practice for any dog show is that the catalog is not published until the day of the show. Therefore, you don't know who the competition is, except for how many of each sex in classes and in Best of Breed. Like in any human endeavor, dog show judges cover the complete spectrum from excellent to incompetent. The only thing you can do is watch what individual judges do, and keep an accurate record. I have a personal list of hundreds of judges, and I have a pretty good idea which of them know the breed, which tend to put up professional handlers, which are open to putting up a whole color, and so on. I always consult it before entering a show. It will take you time to build up your own list, but it will come in very handy in the future. As far as the predominance of Blenheims is concerned, it's usually not so much a prejudice for Blenheims (although that does happen), but more likely the probability that the best dog in the group will be a Blenheim - because of the numbers and the gene pool.
