Jake Shimabukuro on Using Pedals with the Ukulele

Музыка

Jake Shimabukuro has brought a level of virtuosity to the ukulele that has rarely been seen. Jake was kind enough to sit down with Reverb and discuss his effects board and how he applies it to his ukulele. Read more at Reverb: bit.ly/2l7ypiW

He plays guitar better on a uke than I can on a guitar.

This is the first time I've heard Jake just talking about his music and stuff and it strikes me how calm and centered he seems to be along with being so simply eloquent. I'm sure it's an outward expression of his personality which maybe makes his artistry a bit more understandable. It's like you can see the raised and calm and very aware level his mind is travelling on.

He gets such an amazing sound with the ukelele, and that's a really drool-worthy pedalboard too. I find it really interesting that he hears a difference in his chain with the Ditto, I wonder if it has something to do with how sensitive piezo-style pickups on 'acoustic' instruments are, or if there's just a difference in how he 'hears' his instrument (wanting a pristine representation of his acoustic sound from instrument->amp, whereas on guitar our fundamental sound IS the electrified signal, already significantly changed by our pickups and electronics)

There are countless good musicians out there and many great ones but Jake is an artist.

It sounds amazing, Jake. My experience is that to avoid all harshness with or without effects I use a pickup enhancer at the beginning of the signal chain. Pickup enhancers such as TC Electronic Bodyrez (preferred option) or Boss AD-2 work great with acoustic-electric ukuleles, too. I wonder what are your EQ settings in the Henriksen "The Bud" Amplifier you are using in this video...but I guess it is one of the "secrets" of your great sound...

Get a Boss GT-1 if you don't want to spend too much. Boss GT-1 has like everything and they work amazing well with ukes. More importantly the GT-1 is light and compact. Portable.

Thanks for the tip. I have several pedals for guitars but they don't work well with ukuleles. I have a Godin Multiuke with no pedals for this uke. Just exploring to see what's available out there. I do have a small VOX amp for the Godin.

Purists argue the same about the use of effects with the guitar. Isn't the point of using effects to bring an instrument to a new dimension and add sounds otherwise not achievable?

Every thing with distortion sound like electric guitar but true sound of electric guitar is "clean" the pedal is an option most popular in electric guitars, but you can use it in other instrument, like bass, keyboards... and now ukuleles
