Jaguar XKR 4.2 Review - So good that I bought one! - BEARDS n CARS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My coverage of the Jaguar XK on the main HSG Automotive channel is among the best known and most viewed of all my reviews, and for good reason.
The XKR is a fantastic car for the price, with prices severely undercutting many of its rivals from Aston Martin, Maserati and the like. This, combined with great looks, a relatively simple mechanical design which lends itself to reliability, and driving position which can easily accomodate even a large driver are all among the reasons why these X150 shape Jaguar's are so widely loved...

I just bought a Jaguar XKR 2006 and I also prefer the old school J Gate gear lever over the new dial which (for me) lacks the character and nod to legacy the older model give. I think these jags are more reliable than their German rivals in many ways and hence traded my sl55 AMG for this and saved £7k in tue process (2023 prices). I got mine for a touch over £9k and I am over the moon with it

Hi HSG, Fine review 👍, in my opinion the XKR meets all the criteria of cars that I shouldn’t have parked in my garage: -long-hood -narrow-body -outdated-infotainment system -bouncy-ride (when driven slow) -70s looking interior (seats, doors, dashboard) -wrong color exterior in a sports car (black!) -etc… But after watching so many videos talking about it being the best hidden jewel in the GT world and probably becoming a future classic I was tempted to drive one. And boy they were absolutely right! I bought one here in California in May 2022 and I am super fascinated by the ton of potential this car has, this car is really a carmodder’s dream!!! 15,000 bought me a stock 2007 XKR w/ 4.2 supercharged engine with barely 70k miles; I think this is a steal for the price and I am so excited about the big changes I’ll be able to make to this car for less than $3200!!! -lowering-springs and spacers $1100 (parts & labor) -side-fins from an Audi RS5 to make car look even lower $300 (since sideskirts for the XKR are so hard to find) -paint-correction $500 (paint is still good for a more than 10-year old car though) -powder paint wheels 🛞 to black $400 -blackout front grilles, side, and rear emblems $500 -black Alcantera interior ceiling upholstery $350 -change all interior/exterior bulbs to white LEDs $60 The looks and handling of this car is going to be even more amazing than the enthusiast here claim it to be… I will upload before/after pictures when I am done with my project 😎🍻 BTW… the car sitting next to it in my garage is 10-years newer and over $100k more, a $2017 Carrera S. 2007 XKR = Great Value for your money! 💵

In my opinion, of the X150’s, the 4.2 XKR is a better car than the 5.0 because: It has a softer ride It has a quieter exhaust It has a gear lever to rest a hand on It has a dipstick It has a quieter engine It is not mapped to encourage speed It is more respectful of my driving licence It is fast enough for our crowded British roads. It can be left in Neutral with ignition and park brake off It is better value for money I ran two 5 litres and my present 4.2 for 4 years now.

Nice to hear your thoughts on this car. After much searching I bought the 2008 X150 4.2 XKR version coupe. I liked the clean uncluttered front of the 4.2 models, where the 5.0 versions have to me an awkward appearance with the vertical chrome slits on the front bumper. I prefer the 2006 - 2009 classic gear stick to the rotary rising knob. The 4.2 engines have forged pistons while the 5.0 engines have cast pistons. May mean little but to me I like the idea of forged. Also owning a series one 1967 E-Type, I find the 2006 - 2014 XK coupes most closely reflect the E Type coupe in side and rear view. The side window and rear hatch outlines and bonnet "mouth" being reminiscent of the E Type. To me the F-Type bears no resemblance to the E-Type. The F-Type stands on its own as a great car. The XK8 and variants are nice too but to me the front and rear overhangs are a little too long. The X150 series were more expensive new than the F-Types, perhaps as the X150's are larger cars. Its wonderful having a variety of models from XK8 to F-Type to please different tastes :)

Absolutely, and in my review of the F-Type I basically mentioned how I consider it to be the 'Maserati Jaguar', something different to the previous GT's. I'm actually looking to get an X150 XK myself, most likely the base model as I'm a fan of the smoother body and sound.

@@HSGAutomotive Another thought that comes to mind with GT or sports cars, or in fact any car that is used on public roads, I find that extreme horsepower figures are academic. Here in Australia, most speed limits are set at a max of 100kph or perhaps 110kph in some rural areas. Police activity and speed cameras are in abundance. Very few people track their cars. Its sort of a weird satisfaction having a powerful engine but no opportunity to use it :)

It is quick (about 600 hp), beautiful, and very reliable! I daily drive it and have about 182,000 miles on her. She still looks and drives like new and has been to the track dozens of times where for a big, heavy coupe never ceases to put a smile on your face. At the prices you can buy them now, it has to be considered the best performance car bargain on earth.

@@olmanclifton I have an independent mechanice who has worked on my cars for years, more than 10 cars. He does the transmission fluid exchange for me using Jaguar specced tranny fluid as well as all other services I require. I use the car's paddle shifters and have the car in sport and dynamic mode whenever I drive the car. The ZF 6 speed shift firmly in sport and dynamic, and is certainly quick, maybe not compared to a dual clutch tranny but quick enough that you'll be satisfied. And I have over 183,000 miles on the transmission and nearly 600hp driving the rear wheels, so as for reiability and longevity I don't think you could ask for anything more. I have tracked my car many times, so it's not "babied." As for fuel economy, I live in Los Angeles, traffic capital of the earth. Typically I get about 300 miles to a tank of roughly 17 gallons. That works out to slightly less than 18mpg. On a road trip with a lot of uninterrupted speed, 400 miles to the tank roughly. Finally, in the trunk under the hatch there is a decent amount of luggage/storage space. Every week, I carry my friend's and my golf bags in the trunk with still some extra space. So you can certainly pack two people's luggage easily, plus soft bags can be put in the back seat as well. The 5.0L supercharged engine and its great range of torque is simply astounding and will not disappoint. And if you desire more, a $699 tune and pulley from several Jaguar tuners will elevate you to the rarified air of 600+hp. For a well maintained car, these are jewels.

Great review, very informative and well delivered. I've watched a few of your videos now. However, I am I'm a dilemma. Basically I want a V8 before petrol is so expensive, it wouldn't be in any way feasible. I have an Alfa Spider, so don't need a convertible. I was actually thinking TVR Chimaera, however I felt that I didn't need another convertible, plus it would be good to take the other half and our son along on days out in the V8. So am now thinking of the Jags. I did consider a Maserati 4200, but I feel the parts and maintenance costs would be silly to be honest. Anyway, I can't decide between and XKR and an XFR. We have a Yeti, so don't really need a 4 door. And in many ways I prefer the thought of a coupe. However, how useful are the back seats in the real world and I I may ask, what are your thoughts on the 2 cars and their differences? Apologies for the long message..... Cheers in advance James.

Nice review - thanks. I had a 2007 4.2L XK DHC and 'upgraded' to a 2013 5.0L DHC. Having now done over 10,000 miles in the 5.0L - I think I preferred the 4.2! The ONLY advantage of the later car is the better looking headlights and performance. The 4.2L is superior in every other respect. The seats went lower (less electronics beneath), giving better headroom. The ride was more comfortable (Jaguar stiffened the suspension of the later cars to make them more 'sporty' - but ruined the ride) The 'L' gate gear shift is more rewarding to use than the 5.0L's BMW style 'rising knob'! The 4.2 interior didn't 'squeak' or rattle as much. (odd, but true). The 4.2's hood material seemed to be of slightly better quality (it had less creases). The 4.2 seats are more comfortable if you have wide hips - the 5.0L seats have hard narrow bolsters and I've had mine modified. (I'm not a fat-arse but former rower, so have large thighs!). If I could go back to a 4.2, with the later headlights - I would.

Kuddlesworth NA, I know this response is coming months after your comment. but if you're interested, I'll give you my 2 cent's worth. I have a gorgeous 2002 XKR (4.0L) as well as my 2010 XKR (5.0L), To be fair, the 2002 is a convertible and the 2010, a coupe, so some of the jiggly ride of the 2002 can be attributed to that. Having accounted for that, in every other comparison between the two generations, there simply isn't any comparison. The ride on the X100 is always "jiggly" like watching a bowl of jello shake. while the X150's ride is completely solid firm but not nearly as harsh as the X100's ride. So not only is the ride much better on the X150, but handling on the X100 on a curvy road at any kind of speed is scary. On the X150, so long as you don't abruptly floor it where you can lose traction, the handling is flat and predictable, just so much more controlled. The seats in the X150 are terrific and infinitely adjustable, although I do love the old school Jaguar interior of my X100 as well. The proof for me is that I almost never drive my X100 any longer because my X150 is so far and away better that I don't want to submit myself to a lesser ride. Having said that, the X100 is simply beautiful and shows its XKE heritage very well. And since the market on a 175,000 mile X100 (even though it looks like new), is only about $4000-$5000, I can just sit and look at it for that price and take it out when I want topless driving which in Los Angeles is about 360 days per year. I have a restored 1972 De Tomaso Pantera that is just magnificent, but after I bought my XKR in 2013, I stopped driving the Pantera until I could make it a better more drivable car, the XKR was that good.

@@tedgeldberg6498 Yea I can't disagree with anything you said. The ride quality on my XKR isn't very composed either. I wander if there is a way to improve it though because I don't really want to sell my car as it looks so damn nice. However it's also possible our cars jsut need a good suspension service as these cars are nwo pretty old and worn.

I think the last generation xkr is simply “too much of it”…permanently trying to kill you with always too much power available at any time. All Jaguars we owned were always superb “cruisers” and perfect for relaxed long distance driving. The regular XK delivers exactly that…the 5.0 xkr is lacking that. I think if you want to get a screaming engine with a car you can throw around corners…get a Porsche. If you want a fast long distance “ride” - get the standard XK, listen to some music, get a coffee or tea…and you are getting from a to b without even realizing how time and miles are flying by.

Craziest thing about mine so far is that on the trip home yesterday, I filled the tank. I then drove 147 miles back and used exactly a 1/4 tank. Which means that my rough tank range is 588 miles or so of highway use. That alone is nuts, but when you look further it gets crazy. The tank is 15.5 UK gallons, so if you divide 588 miles by that, it means I was sustaining 38 miles per gallon, which is insane.
