I remember the test mules driving through my hometown in the 1980s in Australia. We were so impressed! I know everyone loves the Germans but Jaguar is always so much more special.

Getting a stunning 1988 Daimler XJ40 on Saturday, can’t wait!!!

This is amazing, I love how proud they were. The part where the guy picks up a girl in his Jaguar XJ and takes her to a restaurant is crazy. I'd like a rust free XJ40, preferably in the same spec my granddad had: sovereign in dark blue, painted side stripe and folding tables in the back. And I prefer the airbag steering wheel.

I have a 1994 Jaguar XJ6 Gold , 3.2 litre. The last incarnation of the XJ40, just before Jaguar brought out the X300. It is in what I consider to be the best colour combination of Regency Red with Doeskin interior. I will never sell this car, although I have had various other Jag's, currently a 2007 XKR 4.2 supercharged coupe, I still think the XJ40 is the nicer car to drive.

I remember being a kid and trading up from a Cadillac Sedan DeVille to a Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas Edition. It really made the Cadillac seem like a joke lol

I agree! A much more refined interior and suspension. I remember how shocked I was to see that my father’s 1992 Buick Park Avenue ($25,885) was essentially half the price of my 1992 Sovereign ($50,080). Even a DeVille was only $32,340 then. My 1996 Jaguar XJ12 had an MSRP over $95,000 😳

Have a 94 xj40 ...4.0 .not long done a jaguar owners club run ..could hardly get into hotel car park..but on the autoroute ..ciudad real to Alicante. Within the speed limit it came into its own .got out other end and it felt like I had only done a local run ..apart from the petrol tank being empty ..

I have a wonderful DAIMLER XJ 40 of 1989, fantastic car comfortable fast powerful engine (4000cc), I think its true use is symbolized in 18.55 point .......

Among all steel build XJ's, the XJ40 is like the S-Class, because of its height. XJ Series 1-3 have a Height of 1,34M, XJ40 is 1,37M Height, and X300/X308 is 1,31M Height ! Imagine the guts Jaguar had, while also given the freedom, by FORD, to make the successor of the XJ40, the X300, 6 cm lower...the lowest Super Sedan ever build. Really narrowing down their clientele, focussing on a special breed of costumers. Any X300/X308 owner notices how passengers occasionally bump their head when entering. 🤭

Amazing they do all that testing, and they still have reliability issues. Not everyone can be like the Germans though. I have to say, older Jags definitely had that air about them. They just seem so much more... special. Now you barely even get wood trim in a Jag.

I know, this looked like a very extensive testing programme, yet the early cars especially were not known for their build quality and had unreliable electrics. The Germans aren't what they used to be, they are the most expensive cars to repair when they go wrong which can be fairly frequently nowadays.

Whenever I see photos online of cars such as the Austin Allegro or Rover SD1 undergoing extreme weather testing, I despair. Many British cars of that era didn't do particularly well in the UK's damp climate, and were not well-suited to North American or Australian driving conditions, so what was the point?

Just toured last year 1917 a 1990 XJ6 (120 k miles on it ) around Europe from England (Coventry ) to the east of the Ukraine back to Austria yes the highest pass road over the Stilfersjoch and yes it stopped 3 times ? Germany and Switzerland and now parked until June to drive to the 24 hour of le mans race (ha ha watching ) from there to Spain.. good car for a 1000$ as nobody want such a car anymore !? it is like nobody will hire an old worker (60 ?!) ha ha good now i can drive around and have fun to do so f..work anyway

So many are afraid of these cars. They got significantly better after Ford's acquisition because they finally had access to a global market of parts instead of relying on locally-made parts, especially the electronics (Lucas). While my 1992 has a a large amount of Lucas electronics, there are also quite a few Denso and Bosch parts on the car. My 1996 XJ12 (X300) is almost exclusively Denso electronics, and has been extremely reliable, even with 115k miles on it. That's not to say my XJ40 isn't reliable, however. It's never once left me stranded.

+Nicholas Lester Which one would you recommend, a 1992 or younger XJ40 or a X300 (or X308) if one were to buy it used today? I believe all the troubles were sorted out by the time X300 came into production. All XJ40s and X300/308s look timeless, especially compared to their rivals (except W126 and W140 Mercs). And how would you compare the driving experience of XJ40 and X300?

Watching this video and being around at the time that the 40 made its debut and I will admit to being crestfallen . I saw the square headlights , the chiselled bodywork and the digital instruments and thought to myself......Nah ! I dont want one of these. My Dad had a brand new XJ6 in '69 , regency red 4.2 and neighbours thought we had won the pools . At 12 years old I was bursting with pride , two petrol tanks ! chrome wheels, Jaguar right through ! . then in '77 I had a series 2 xj6 4.2 and thought it the best car in the world . Cried when I sold it ! Then in 2008 had my first 7 series BMW , sold to me as the finest car on the planet , then after it died, I had another and that died . Flash forward to 2021 , I bought a series 3 V12 with just 20k on the clock from Japan . its a 1990 , one owner and I wept when I sat in the sumptious doe skin seats looking at the proper Jag instruments and new then that I had got truely the best car in the universe . The XJ40 has come and gone , it was naff when it came and it was still naff when it went . The series 3 remains the safest haven in a troubled world and I should never have left it for all those poxy other cars . There never will be another car as good , as beautiful, as dependable and as silent or as well made .

What a ridiculous post. The xj40 was much better than the car it took over. The series 3 was still based on an ageing 60s design. The 40 was quieter, smoother and much safer.

@@cortinadale I take it you are joking ? The 40 was ridiculed and reviled for its looks and even the dashboard awash with digital claptrap was changed early on back to analogue traditional instruments and as for that handbrake digging into the drivers thigh must have been a thrown on last minute affair. The 40 , all of them dreadful flimsy interiors and a chassis that initialy couldnt take the V12 . and you are wrong about the 60,s design, it actualy was drawn in the 50,s same as the suspension design but no matter, the series 3 is still the better car no matter when it was conceived

@@fionacarstairs7326 wrong,i have had 2 series 3s,a 4.2 sovereign and a daimler double six.fabulous as they are,they not as good as the 40s of which i have had 4.all 4 litre ones.they drive so much better than the series 3s.have since had x300s,x308s and the x350s,of which i still have one,theyre the best of the lot.
