The bday song you are talking abt is in a way taking story fwd. In the song jagga is trying to explain Shruti (Katrina) that she needs to forget her past. Yes she lost her bf and she can't keep hanging there all her life. She needs to move on in life. The philosophy of that song is life is a big party where everybody comes eat, drink enjoy the party and leave 1 day. So should we.

Jayanta Panda ohh that song. well then @jaby that's d fun/party song. Shruti (Katrina) left back to Kolkata. All he had were his hostel friends to celebrate. So this is how he celebrates his bday. Nice song though. I liked it.

A few things: 1. Loved how you reviewed it and indeed it is a beautiful mess. 2. That party song was one of the best songs of the movie. You won't get it because that moment is so so life like for any Indian and they capture it with music really well. 3. The movie got delayed for 3 -4 years. The plot was changed again and again. Hence the choppy editing towards the end. 4. There is no use of finding logic in the movie. Anurag on the very onset said its a kids movie and the editing style was also very Indian comic book like.

Most relatable and honest review of the movie. A lot of people have their minds too restricted. Great job on the review! Do watch Barfi too 😊

Hey Jaby, i am a film student here in India. I loved the movie because here in India there was never a musical made, i mean like La La Land where the story is told through songs, and as you were talking about a song which didn't take the story forward but if u focus on the lyrics or the subtitles it explains us the situation where he sees the photographs of Katrina and her boyfriend who is dead, the song clearly explains how one comes to life and enjoys it and goes back without taking anything back, its only the pleasures that we experience when we are here, this thing is metaphorically told with the title of the song itself, Kana Khake Daru peeke chale gaye which literally translates to everyone came drank some alcohol eat some food and then left which means in life u come, experience it and leave. And i think you should have spoken about the transitions used in the movie, i felt they were very brilliantly used, just recall u will find out. Well, i loved the movie.

Arsh Sheikh best movie to watch

Such a wonderful movie. Musical detective thriller.

LOL, even I and everyone in the audience screamed as soon as "he" arrived at the end.

Musicals tend to grow on you over time. I'm sure this movie will be better when I watch it again someday and get a chance to slowly savour it and integrate the political backdrop a little better into the viewing. Whimsical things hold a special place in my heart even when they're beautiful messes.

We need to support directors trying to push the envelope in terms of style and filmmaking in Indian cinema. A true blue classic musical like this has not really been attempted in Bollywood before and even though the movie is not perfect and suffers from a tonally misfired and hurried third act , it still deserves to be lauded.

omg jaby I adore you how you recognize Indian actors I mean even I don't know who play jagga father is same actor play biswas in kahani ,respect jaby for dedication and keenly watching ,you are not just reacting for money or stuff but you really into Indian cinema ,love you

She was only in a cameo in the movie. I was trying to figure out who she played.

i felt the same. Some parts were stretched for no good reason. who in the world sends a kid away with a stranger to never return. There were many flaws in the movie from bad animations to animals sounding like other animals(Listen to Cheetah's Roar). The story is in the present but some of those military weapons and tanks are from previous generations. You said it right Jaby it is BEAUTIFUL MESS.

are bollywood movies dubbed in english in America?

The movie was more of an acting oriented rather than a story oriented one I feel. Having said that it's definitely a one time watch because Ranbir Kapoor absolutely nailed it. I would say it's one of his best performances after Barfi and Rockstar. The best of his generation! He simply takes up roles none of his peers would dare to take up! Watch out for the Dutt biopic because that might just be a better performance than even Barfi.

Imtiaz Ali is one director who generally goes for the non linear way of story telling, check out Love aaj kal and Rockstar. I guess you would also enjoy Tamasha, its been broken down into acts like a play, also amazing acting by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika.

Jaby, Nice work as always. The songs in India do not necessarily take the movie forward. several of them are just-in-the-moment kind of songs. I guess they support the philosophy of enjoy the moment. In my reflections the song 'Khana Kha k..' was not only a whimsical party act, but also, as everyone was singing, gave jagga a chance to gel with so many strangers. and the core of that song was the sadness of Shurti.. who ultimately will be left alone with her grief, however long this party goes...

there is meaning behind that song where people singing that everybody gone atfer eating and drinking that song was symbolizing people come in this world eat drink and then they go because katrina kaif is still not going forward after death of his boyfriend and celebrating his birthday

Jaby, if you remember the movie correctly, that song starts once Jagga sees the Cake which has her boyfriend's name. That particular shot was put in there to give the audiences a perspective as to why the song is actually there.

I liked the movie. We don't get to see so much of beautiful cinematography in India. At the end, it kinda got rushed but still liked it. It was definitely much much better than The overrated la la land( for me la la land had good music but the story absolutely sucked )

jaby koay ohh cool but i hope when ever you get to watch you will do a review cuz it will be a very interesting one becuz people here criticised it a lot and some (like me) loved it ,your review is the best as u bring forth the points which made the people unlike the movie there are some out there still did not figured it out why this movie was criticised so much yes its on a bit slow pace but plz help us figure out why it was criticised so much😅

Hey Jaby, very accurate what you said. The movie got delayed alot about 2yrs or more due to several reasons. Hence there were so many continuity gaps, I marked some myself. Hence it had scenes that move very fast and it is indeed a mess on several levels.

yo....you are right anurag basu uses many reference for hitchcock and satyajit roy....the most number of reference are made for styajit roy...and you can only get it if you have watched hitchcock and roy movies...!! the movie is first part of a full adventure....the 2nd part will come next....

Being a lover of good film, and not just Indian films, I strognly suggest you guys to watch Barfi!.Its almost as whimsical as Jagga Jasoos but far organised and better movie than it. Barfi also was India's entry for best foreign language movie in the Academy Awards. Please do watch. 💙💙💙

The people come and leave song does move the story forward because it speaks to Katrina about her boyfriend, this is referenced in Morocco when she wants to go back, and says stop trying to take her ex boyfriends place. So song says life is a party and people are guests for 2 minutes and they eat, and drink and go away. I thought that song was super apt.

Saswata Chatterjee is a huge star in Bengali film industry... he can do any role in any range of Cinema...he is famous for art films n critics choice films as well as regular big hit films.... he is a gem of acting industry....

What i read, there was going to be a sequel but given the movie is not working well so they shelved the project.

Jagga's innovative scooter was like a magical broomstick from harry potter got engine powered.

The movie Is ahead of it's time, it has a speed pace and every line and every detail was important but it's not for everyone , it takes a hard hard work to bring something so different like this to bring it in reality

Bhai movie ko aaye 4 saal hi hue hai. Konsi audience badal gayi itne saal mai. Kuch bhi mat bol "ahead of time". Movie alag thi, lekin ye baat tu 2035 mai bolta hua acha lagta hai.

I have seen you review movies by some phenomenal actors in Indian Cinema. But i think you have missed out one Anil Kapoor.He is one of the most versatile actors in Indian Cinema,and somewhat understated. He has acted in couple of Hollywood movies as Slumdog Millionaire and he had small role in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He has done some timeless movies as Mr India,Ishwar ,Parinda. You would love Ishwar , its a movie way ahead of its time,please do watch it and post a review of it.
