My father sang this song to my mother, when he came home from work. My mother died young, she was only 49 years old. Today is her birthday.

Living in Belgium, I have no feeling of national coherence whatsoever. But this song brings me tears, and gives me a sense of unity. It brings me a feeling of nostalgia of a time I wasn't even alive.

Living in Zeeland, the Netherlands does also not give me the feeling of being dutch. I feel more close to the places around me, Zeeland en Vlaanderen (Zeeuws en Belgisch). Ik heb niks met Holland. Jacques Brell was also before my time, my parents did not play his music. I am glad I got to know him together with other great singers from that time.

Hello - I love Jacques Brel. I advice you Peter Hammill - he is too a incredible poet and singer. (For example, he sings in the songs "A House With No Door" of Van Der Graaf Generator, "Still Life" of Van Der Graaf Generator, "Forsaken Garden" of Peter Hammill, "Refugees" of Van Der Graaf Generator, "Betrayed" of Peter Hammill) Have a nice day

At 67 yrs, today this song popped into my head for no reason. I recall hearing it as a child (on the radio). Haven't heard it for almost 5 decades. Decided to try looking it up and here I am. Had no clue it was in Flemish. And then of course I had to look up the lyrics. An empassioned love song. I am a bit freaked out about the sudden memory of this tune from long ago though. Eerie. 🥺

Many of Brel's songs I could sing in English. Although I didn't know French, Brel's enunciation of this song, both the French and Flemish, I readily learned by ear. Over cold winter in the mid-70's on my first visit to Paris, my friend convinced me to sing at his local bistro on the Left Bank. I sang in English but didn't garner much attention, not even the Brel songs. I then launched into "Marieke" just as Brel sings it here, without looking up. I figured I was probably mangling the French. I'm a powerful singer-not quite the energy Brel has here-but the verve in this song just builds to that wonderful crescendo at the end. When I finished, for a just moment you could have heard a pin drop. Then came a tremendous applause. But of course, they wanted more French songs but I'd none to give. Sigh...

Oh Marieke, Marieke, I loved you so much Between the towers of Bruges and Ghent Oh Marieke, Marieke, long ago Between the towers of Bruges and Ghent Without love, warm love The wind blows, the stupid wind Without love, warm love The ocean cries, the grey ocean Without love, warm love The light suffers, the dark light And the sand scours my country My flat country, my Flanders Oh Marieke, Marieke, the Flemish sky The colour of the towers between Bruges and Ghent Oh Marieke, Marieke, the Flemish sky Cries with me from Bruges to Ghent Without love, warm love The wind blows “IT’S OVER” Without love, warm love The ocean cries “ALREADY OVER” Without love, warm love The light suffers, “EVERYTHING IS OVER” And the sand scours my country My flat country, my Flanders Oh Marieke, Marieke, the Flemish sky Did it weigh too much from Bruges to Ghent? Oh Marieke, Marieke, on your twenty years I loved that so much, from Bruges to Ghent Without love, warm love The devil laughs, the black devil Without love, warm love My heart burns, my old heart Without love, warm love The summer dies, the sad summer And the sand scours my country My flat country, my Flanders Oh Marieke, Marieke, rewind the time Rewind the time back to Bruges and Ghent Oh Marieke, Marieke, rewind the time Where you loved me, from Bruges to Ghent Oh Marieke, Marieke, often at night Between the towers of Bruges and Ghent Oh Marieke, Marieke, all ponds Open their/your arms for me from Bruges to Ghent From Bruges to Ghent, from Bruges to Ghent… Beautiful song that takes on so much more after reading a translation of the lyrics.

His roots are (at least partially) in West Flanders. He didn't have his roots in Brussels. He spoke French natively as part of the bourgeoisie and didn't speak a Dutch dialect nor the standard language of Dutch fluently. He did speak it to some extent though and made songs in Dutch, for which I really respect him.

Jacques Brel bleibt einzigartig. Heutzutage würde man ihn wohl ganz anders "performen".

Too bad you still don't have anything to do with Jacques Brel, classy Belgium nor this song. Besides, MarieKE is a Belgian name, see? Also, Marie is a Roman-Catholic name, so you got that from Belgium too. May I quote a countryman of yours at another Brel video: "Lets make a deal with the Belgians to posthumously declare Jaques [spelled wrong] Brel a Dutchman.".... How dare you be so shockingly disrespectful towards Jacques Brel and the whole Belgian nation. The very fact you don't feel ashamed about all of these millions of "incidents" says it all. Poor Dutch, pretending to be Romanesque like the Belgians (meanwhile denying it from Belgium and being separatists first class), these days, still anti-french to the back of your bones. No matter how hard you try, you'll never become as classy and civilized as the Belgians, a history of over 2000 yrs of civilization with foundation in the Roman Empire made us the way we are.

+Galaxia National borders that go back a couple of years have no meaning you fool. It is language through which the roots of culture run. Dutch, Flemish its in the embrace of language that we are united, a bond which nationalism can't break.
